BioWare opens Austin studio for new MMO
RPG-producing
giant BioWare (Baldur's Gate, KOTOR, Jade Empire) has announced the opening of a new studio
in Austin, Texas--the company's first office outside its native Canada. BioWare Austin will be responsible for a new
MMORPG and has already brought some considerable talent to the unnamed project. In addition to relocating in-house
design talent from the Neverwinter Nights team, veterans from Ultima Online, Sony Online
Entertainment, and EA are also on board. And you could be next! If you plan on attending the Game Developer's Conference next week, bring your resumes. BioWare and sister studio Pandemic (Full Spectrum Warrior, Star Wars Battlefront) will be recruiting.

even though I'm not much of an MMOer (just installed Eve this past weekend, it's my first), I love that BioWare is jumping into this arena. they're probably my favorite developer around. I didn't even play any RPGs before KotOR, because a chance encounter with a Japanese RPG as a child ruined the whole genre. Now I'll try damn near any RPG made by a western developer.
BioWare is great at world-building, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they come up with. I'm hoping it's sci-fi based, because the fantasy market is already cornered by umpteen games, but I'll be interested either way.

I'll second that vote of confidence for BioWare. They are one of the few companys that I feel that I could trust to make a solid and reliable game. However they have not made many ventures into the multiplayer realm other than Neverwinter Nights, which in many aspects was similar to many MMO games we play today. Each server could support up to 72 people and was made strong by the community of players. Are they up to the challange to make a new and exciting MMO that will not represent the daily grind of so many other countless games? I hope so.
