How dare they use games and the art which surrounds it and turn it into and advertising campaign?

I don't care if they fit (which I think they won't), ads do not belong in such games.

The next thing (in a few years), you'll see the online games being "paused" for a min or two, so they can stream video ads to us...

F**k them and their corporate crap, I'll never own one of those games.

I'm currently in the beta myself. Been for a few months now, it's a really fun game, completely unlike any other mmo out there. The announcement about the advertisements hasn't gone over well with the beta community but the official word over at Netdevil is that nothing is concrete yet and the advertisements may not even make it in. I personally wouldn't mind them if it comes with a reduced monthly fee or they hire extra live content developers. Given that it's a ruined earth, it would make sense that there would be ruined advertisements from the past. And the only things that reall can survive a nuclear crisis is cockroaches and their not-too-distant relatives, salesmen.

spacedout - good point that the ads might well be in a ruined/dilapidated state, perhaps I was too hasty to judge that they might not fit in.

Monthly Costs?? Maybe drop their costs but as far as the User End, Isnt this following Guild Wars setup where you buy the game and your set, no fees.. I swear thats what the talk was..

Or else maybe this is how they planned on handling that..

If they plan to charge a monthly fee AND have in-game ads it shows how much they are out of touch with many gamers. I'm not going to pay have Taco Bell and Pepsi ads in my futuristic style game. It will totally trash the immersion factor. I don't think we'll be seeing that crap in WoW anytime soon.....

First off, form what I read in mags and the screen shots i've seen, I don't understand why I should pay a monthly fee for this. Isn't this pretty much Twisted Metal with just a bit more players per server? First off even if it's some rediculous number of players, what's the point? You're either not gonna be seeing them and if you are your system's gonna lag like crazy and everyone's gonna be dying every second. If there are 64 players or less durring a single match, then what the hell am I paying for? First person shooters have been at 64 players at a time with no lag and I don't have to pay monthly for it.
As for the advertising part, if there's advertising, (I don't care how they distroy/age the advertising, there's no way they can make it fit in correctly)I'm not paying a single penny for the game. What's happening to games is the same thing that happened to cable. People started paying to watch TV to get away from the commercials, now look where it's gotten. If gamers don't stop this now, online gaming will turn into crap cable.

I will not EVER TOUCH this fucking game now that it is to be plastered with ads. Show your paying customers some respect, don't shove bullshit ads down their throats. Any company putting ads into their games won't see any money from me, thats part of the reason I've stopped watching tv (pay tv with ads, wtf???). The most I would accept would be "realistic" ads in sports games that DO NOT use the internet (which, of course, the customer has to pay for) to update themselves.

Every time I heard about another game adding advertising, I instantly lose my interest in that game.

It's pretty weird, and I personally don't like it. The games with the ads are the same price as the games without, so it's not really benefiting us directly. A developer could argue that it's actually HELPING keep the game at only $60, but I wouldn't believe it if I heard that.

Anyway, I was walking through Best Buy today and some kids were playing Fight Night: 3 on the 360 demo machine/couch area - Ali/Fraser "Thrilla in Manilla" match - and there was a huge 'Burger King' banner in hanging in the (very near) background. Not even a 'burger king' logo from the timeframe that those guys fought in, but the straight-up 2001 circular logo you see right now.

It didn't make sense, and was one of many anachronistic logos hanging in the gym. It's only going to get worse. AT LEAST give us period-accurate ads if you can pick a classic bout. But ask yourself, developers, why are you putting in ads? It's a cop-out to me.

Anton - It's classic MMORPG style play, not matches on a server. You control the car and drive around on missions getting XP, tricking out your car with new weapons/armour as you gain cash and levels, exploring new areas of the world... and you get to shoot at a lot of stuff too, rather than run around killing orcs and rabbits.
