Rumor: Dell has bought Alienware
CNET has heard from "a reliable
source" that Dell has indeed bought Alienware, the high-end PC vendor. It's obvious that Dell wants a bigger piece of the PC gaming pie, considering their XPS line of systems and the fact that hardcore gamers are willing to pay a pretty price to eke out higher framerates and screen resolutions.
The question is whether Dell was actually willing to buy its way into gaming credibility and if it would move the company into the realm of AMD-powered game/workstations or not. More word when we have it.

Buy your way into gaming credibility? Pfft... One must earn such credibility.

"Buy your way into gaming credibility? Pfft... One must earn such credibility."
That's what most people thought until Microsoft bought Bungie for $20-40 million and Halo became the driving force behind the Xbox.

...and I will still not buy their systems. I'd rather do what I've been doing for years...build my own stuff so I know how to troubleshoot it myself.

@1
Yeah aint that what most companies do..
Look at the Telco market.. As far as software EA is another, they bought Sierra, Papyrus (think i got that right) And now EA has the ONLY real nascar game on the market..
Cisco bought Linksys to dominate, and now Scientific Atlanta to spread..
Big buy lil guys to own more, And some Buy unrelated market just to Expand to a bigger market.
Corp. America is all about gaining atleast $1 from every household.

Yeah. . . But they're still running that buggy, cruddy Windows OS, right?
So they still suck.

If Dell does buy out Alienware, they'll have to reverse the 100% markup policy. I can build an Alienware-equivelant system for half the price and use better components (not as in more RAM, but better RAM, etc) to boot.

I always built my own systems... until I scored a loaded Dell XPS for around $1300 a year and a half ago ($1300 after a bunch of crazy % off coupons and free shipping). At the time, just the procesor and XP cost close to $1300. techbargains.com can be your friend when looking for a cheap Dell.
Anyways, the memory was crappy (Samsung) and Dell replaced it after I started having problems. Everything else about it is really nice. I love it...

Just a heads up but a Dell spokesman went ahead and denied this acquisition too.

Oh and I forgot to mention that the cases that both Alienware and Dell use for their gaming systems are too damn big.
I like mine nice and snug yet with equal (or more) of the power:

The question is: is that even possible?

I just built my own system last week for $3.3K. Alienware wanted $5.4K for pretty much the same system...
I think Dell will really F-up Alienware with their big business mentality but who knows. One thing is for sure, the two founders of Alienware (which is a privately owned company) will be rich for the rest of their lives if this deal is true.

Hell even their laptops are overpriced (as are their competitors such as Voodoo PC and Falcon Northwest.)
Check this out...when I bought my ODM laptop early last year I spend ~$1900 (P-M 1.8ghz, 2GB ram, Radeon 9700, DVD/CDRW, 15.4" screen, 1.25" thick, ~6lbs...oh and it plays HL2 silky smooth.) Falcon Northwest had the EXACT same laptop (and by "EXACT" I mean the EXACT manufacturer, same color, EXACT same specs) and it would have cost me $3,500 for the EXACT same specs.
Case in point...n00bs buy from Alienware and similar companies.

Isn't alienware owned by microsoft? I have an alienware and one of the logos says Alienware (by microsoft) if so microsoft would never sell to Dell.
