Beyond Good & Evil 2 rumors surface
According to French
gaming site Jeux Expo, Ubisoft's Michel Ancel has begun work on a
sequel to Beyond Good & Evil. The original title featured a cliffhanger ending that demanded a second
game. However, it was believed that plans for this sequel were cancelled because of poor sales of the first Beyond
Good & Evil, despite critical acclaim. Jeux Expo's report claims that the sequel is being developed for all
next-gen consoles and will be released next year.[Thanks streigs & Infendo]

I hope so. This was one of the most enjoyable games I've played. A real gem. If you love gaming, you ought to give the first one a look.
1up_clock @ Mar 15th 2006 12:24PM
OH PLEASE LET THIS BE TRUE.
The first one is one of the best games I ever played. I just hope they work on the stealth and not put in a "point of no return", or if they do put one in, make it work like Psychonauts, where it tells you and saves to a seperate file.

by da looks of it, it might b revolution exclusive as well! c http://www.britishgaming.co.uk/?p=635 4 more details

With all the recognition the first game received as "the best game no one played" i'm sure the second will sell well granted good marketing. Take a look at Shadow of the Colossus and Ico. Technically not a sequal, yes, but the second game did very well and even spurred interested in the first game, which was another sleeper hit.
I hope they don't can this title, as the first game was a truly enjoyable experience.

This game has been on every single "Best Games That You Didn't Know About List" to date--with all that exposure, you'd think it would have sold a lot better over time. At any rate, I too am excited about a sequel. I just hope they don't lower the budget to such a degree that the sequel will give both games a bad name.
KilgoreTrout XL @ Mar 15th 2006 12:48PM
Good news! A fantastic game that sold abysmally is getting another chance. It's like the gamer's version of "Arrested Development."
... And I'm still waiting (in vain) for the original to be added to the 360's backwards compatibility list.
Sense @ Mar 15th 2006 12:50PM
The original Beyond Good & Evil was to star Chuck Norris. When word got out that he had been removed from the game, potential sales went down the toilet.
Hopefully they'll rectify that in the sequel
Seriously though, I'm really excited to play this, the first one was a really good game.
pete @ Mar 15th 2006 12:50PM
I played this game when it first came out on PC. It was definitely a lot of fun, but I didn't think it was revolutionary. I also thought it was wayyyy too short.
But it would be nice to see more games like this, ans Psychonauts, so I'm stoked for a sequel (a Psychonauts sequel would be awesome too, but is unlikely).
Princess Zelda @ Mar 15th 2006 1:08PM
I enjoyed the first game, I believe what was best about the game was the story and being able to take picture's of the animals with the Camera. I really hope Michel Ancel brings this to revolution I'd love to use the controller to take pictures. Beyond Good and Evil has a great story and there is show much potential for a sequel.
Did anyone else find it hard to kill the final boss?
DJ @ Mar 15th 2006 1:16PM
The first BG&E was a great game, but stop putting it on a pedestal. You people act like its a piece of 'gamer cred' to have played it. It was good but it had flaws. The game pretty much fell apart at the end. It seemed like things were just getting interesting and then its the end of the game before you know it. It's like the conclusion was just thrown in there because they were running out of time or money (like the fifth season of Angel). If they can really flesh out a sequel then it will be a fantastic game but the first was just a little generic. Its just a personal opinion, but I didn't like seeing rastafarian rhinocerouses and a pig sidekick. In all fairness the plot/story was great and it had very good game mechanics but the game felt incomplete.
Jim Connolly @ Mar 15th 2006 1:58PM
This would be super, and I will gladly put down $50 for the sequel. This game world needs to be continued, since it was so immersive. Maybe Ancel got some more cred since he recently was Knighted.
matthew @ Mar 15th 2006 2:09PM
This would restore my faith in God.
Well, this and another Psychonauts.
And why do these belong on a pedistal? Because they were off-beat, character driven games with great control, yes. But the #1 resaon, they were just plain fun.
Zachary @ Mar 15th 2006 2:37PM
I would certainly be at store the day this came out, I picked up the first one after seeing it all over the place in "Best Games That You Didn't Know About List" and I loved it, the only complaint that could be made against BG&E was how short it was but it was a great game while it lasted.

No, we're acting like it's a good, but obscure game. And id does feel like the game skipped a lot. One second your taking pictures for IRIS, the next you're going to the moon.
>Did anyone else find it hard to kill the final boss?
One death, yo. I'm bad!
Nullness @ Mar 15th 2006 4:21PM
The last boss was easy if you turned your controller upside down. I do hope the next one is longer, and marketed better.
DMON @ Mar 15th 2006 4:34PM
now we just need shenmue 3.
Dan-O-Mite @ Mar 15th 2006 5:18PM
Well, Peter Jackson essentially gave Ubisoft the King Kong license because he liked Beyond Good and Evil so much, so it isn't that surprising that a sequel would get made. Ubi has also said, if I recall, that they want to make some offbeat, somewhat "prestige" games to get top developers who will subsequently go on to work on mainstream stuff (and make it better, presumably). Overall this seems like a fairly good and business savvy reason to produce games that don't really make money.
DJ @ Mar 15th 2006 5:41PM
Sorry about my previous comment, I just like to see more criticism in my gaming discussions. It does deserve a sequel, but I just hope they can make a complete game this time and not cut corners. It is one of the better games that nobody played but in a way I can see why nobody played it. It needs more life to it. Something was just off about the first one, an intangible spark that was missing. Maybe it needs more character development so the player cares more about the world they are in and the people they interact with, which is something the legend of zelda games have always nailed. If they can do that for the sequel then it will be a force to be reckoned with and start a best selling franchise.
Levi @ Mar 15th 2006 6:05PM
I once read that Jade is modeled after Michel Ancel's wife. She must be really hot.
Simon @ Mar 15th 2006 6:36PM
Still chugging through the first game, it's pretty awesome. A sequel would be great!
Tatsuya @ Mar 16th 2006 8:56AM
I'm all for a sequel as I really like this kind of game where you have as much action as adventure. The gameplay was also great but I didn't really enjoy the characters (a pig as a sidekick! and there was something about the heroin that really annoyed me but I couldn't say what).
A Psychonauts sequel an more games of this genre would be welcome too.
Jonn @ Mar 16th 2006 10:55AM
>It is one of the better games that nobody played but in a way I can see why nobody played it. It needs more life to it. <
It didn't sell because it launched against Mario Kart:Duble Dash!!, Jak 2, Sands of Time, and Ratchet and Clank:Going Commando.
>If they can do that for the sequel then it will be a force to be reckoned with and start a best selling franchise.<
Do you know how many excellent movies, books, and TV shows have wallowed in obscurity? Firefly, Arrested Development, Medium...
jadenguy @ Mar 16th 2006 11:41AM
i've been spreading rumors of a sequal since two months after the first came out. thse rumors are mine!
Darth Vedic @ Mar 16th 2006 1:28PM
What about a sequel to ANACHRONOX while we're at it? Another cliffhanger ending that demanded a second game, but plans for a sequel were cancelled because of poor sales despite critical acclaim.

Wauv! This is really some news I have been waiting for in a long time! Even though it may still be classified as a rumour, it's a bit better than just guessing.
I hope that they will take into mind that a bit more exploration would be so nice in this world, also the photoshoots of animals were a fresh new asset. Personally I'd rather see a bit more animal "hunting" and a few less of those sneeking puzzles, as they really made me stomp my keyboard - but I continued as I liked the heroine and story concept. Also, I found the look of Jade quite amusing as one of my friends resembles her quite a lot :-)
