Halo 3 possibly back in PS3 launch frame, says analyst
With all the PS3 delay news flying around lately, it seems that a certain big sequel for the Xbox 360 may have
creeped back onto the 2006 release window.According to Next Generation, a "lead analyst" from Tokyo is claiming that "big-hitting titles" for the first-moving 360 could be targeted at the PS3 launch "just to sabotage it." He stated that the release of Halo 3 ("timed to PS3") would be "quite damaging for Sony" as well.
Well, a preemptive launch of Halo 3 would certainly serve as a distraction to Sony's next-gen launch plans, but people who really want a PS3 probably won't be deterred by Microsoft's premiere FPS appearing around the same time their favorite console does. Gears of War most likely won't stop PS3 fanboys, either. An unexpectedly early release (of either title) would certainly prove to be a perfect holiday present for 360 owners, however. Competition is grand.

meh...I think MS will announce H3 in E3 for Fall 2006 with a huge trailer and MAYBE a bit of gameplay...then come Tokyo Game Show they'll confirm a release date for sometime in the spring, if not later. I doubt it will be ready for this year.

Spartacus @ Mar 15th 2006 2:10PM
Gears of War is scheduled for a summer 2006 debut, so it won't need to have an "unexpected early release" to be a "perfect holiday present". But yeah, neither title will distract the PS3 fans. Halo 2 didn't for the PS2, so why would this round be any different?
Arachneya @ Mar 15th 2006 2:11PM
Umm, Halo 3 will not be out in 2006. You can wish all you want, but don’t expect the next Bungie game before summer 2007.
Gears of War is the game those analysts (and a lot of folks) are thinking of (for October 2006).

"What guy?"
"The guy who doesn't care for Halo games."
"Yeah, I figured there had to be at least one of you out there."
"Yup, not saying it's not a great series. I simply don't have any interest in it."
"So it's release won't effect you in any way?"
"Other than my being happy for my X-Box owning friends who have been waiting for it? No, no it won't."

There is no one software title that could ever stop the sales of a new console, whether it's the Xbox360 or PS3...and if your intentions are to drop $400-500 on a console, then adding a $60 game isn't going to hurt your pocket either.
binford @ Mar 15th 2006 2:13PM
Releasing Halo 3 in November is wishful thinking at this point.
As much as I'd like to see Halo 3 this winter, the game would only have been in production two years max. and I don't think MS would like their premiere franchise to be anything less than spectacular.
My guess is Winter 07
MosquitoControl @ Mar 15th 2006 2:14PM
If Microsoft releases Halo 3 and drops the 360 price $50 to $100 for Christmas... yeah. PS fans will still buy a PS3. Parents and less discriminating gamers will go for the 360. Especially if it's on shelves.
Microsoft cannot steal all of the thunder from either Nintendo or Sony. Just like they couldn't steal Microsofts thunder. But it can certainly lessen it.

A new global release of Sony's PS3 opens the door for Microsoft to steal Sony's thunder.
Even if Halo 3 is not quite ready by then, they simply can release a playable demo (with maybe somekind of limited online play) during the holiday season.
In any event, expect MS to start the teasing this upcoming E3!

In all seriousness, what is/are the "killer apps" we can expect from the PS3? HALO 3 for the 360 is a given, but what PS3 game can stand toe-to-toe with the Chief?
I'm curious to know what the general concensus is within the PS community. I myself do not play my PS2 much except for a few RPGs (as area the XBOX was definately lacking) and aside from the FF series on PS, I don't have much other reason to get a PS3 (until the inevitable price drop or Virtua Fighter, whichever comes first).
For those PS fanboys, what do you think is THE killer app for the PS3?
Austin @ Mar 15th 2006 2:27PM
Can we get a solid reference for the xbox stories anymore? Yesterday its was the "alleged best buy employee in jersey" and now its the anonymous analyst in Tokyo. Of course its going to coincide with the PS3. It was on the F'ng cover of time magazine 6 months ago. As a self proclaimed analyst (and xbox fanboy) I predict the halo movie will come out in summer 07... #$^% I'm good its right here in an article from November 05. Spooky!
Fenris @ Mar 15th 2006 2:30PM
I have to agree as much as I enjoy Halo, the game will only effect the non-rabid fanboy crowd. Heavy hitting games can help sell consoles in general, but they usually only effect the casual gamer or the gift purchase.
The hype given to Halo 3 will certainly be huge and cause a number of systems to be sold, but anyone in the market who thinks that anyone other than the casual gamer will change their mind is sorely mistaken. There will of course be exceptions to the rule but not in significant numbers to effect overall sales. The PS3 will sell out just like the 360 has and still does.
I do however really want this game, Halo LAN and Halo 2 On-line has been some of the most fun I have had playing games with freinds.

To #1: The week Halo 2 was release - no major game came out that WEEK, regardless of platform. Even "Tron 2.0: Killer App" (an FPS on the Xbox for that matter) that was supposed to be out November 9th, 2004 was released on the 4th (it still did horribly).
Half Life 2 (PC), Resident Evil 4 (GC) & San Andreas (PS2) came out a week or two later, including over a dozen other games. Consider that no game can claim a week's exclusivity in the pivot month of November.
Nonetheless, the next Bungie game will not be released to counter any console's launch. It will be announced ahead of time, and watch every publisher make sure no other game is released that day, for fear of being lost.
If you think Halo 3's release is inconsequential, you are erronously underestimating the reach of the brand.

I agree. The problem with selling Halo 3 before the begining of 06 is the XBox. The Xbox will be discontinued in 2007 (99.999% sure) so they can use that as leverage against the people who havent taken the leap to next gen consoles.
Kasey Johnson @ Mar 15th 2006 2:40PM
Has anyone read the lastest GameInformer? The have a 2 page article on a game called Forerunner(it is Halo) to be revealed at E3 by Bungie, They said their next project won't be Halo 3, and they are right. People have already played it, it's sooner than many of you guys think.
LunarDuality @ Mar 15th 2006 2:44PM

Well, the mmofps genre is already filled by the upcoming game Huxley for the 360. So, I doubt MS would point Bungie in that direction.
bd @ Mar 15th 2006 2:47PM
lol, making the assumption everybody likes halo, aren't we? Other than a generic FPS, it isn't much. Half Life (both of them) are way better in graphics, physics and overall gameplay. Doom 4 has better graphics. Golden-eye is still the best multiplayer FPS i've ever played; wait, maybe South Park is, it was hilarious, so was Duke Nukem. Halo? It's just another boring unoriginal Sci-fi shooter. Not the first online FPS.
To some people, the PS3 is itself a killer App, due to all the technology it has. I mean, a Cell 3.2 Ghz Processor with 512 RAM, Linux, a 60GB hard drive and a BD-player? With Linux you could hypotetically do a ton of things. If Sony markets it the right way, and implements it well, it could as well be sold as a "cheap computer", not an "expensive console". It is highly feasible, and it could spawn a group of consumers that bought PS3 for its non-gaming features.
Saying "which killer App other than Final Fantasy will exist for PS3?" is as ridiculous as saying "Which killer App other than Halo will exist for 360?". Except of course, Xbox 360 is a year early, so naturally it has more games in development. Just to mention a few games though:
FFXIII
FFVII remake
DQ9
MGS4
DMC4
GoW3
SotC2
VF5 (as long as it's exclusive)
SC4 (same applies)
T6 (same)
Kz3 (if it doesn't blow it like the first one)
I used mostly capital letters because people that know what they mean will certainly consider them killer Apps. If you don't recognize them, then they aren't killer apps for you.
There are more killer apps for 360 besides "halo 3" and "Gears of War", as they aren't for me, but others are or will be; hell, Dead Rising looks like a killer App to me, not Halo 3.
Questions?
Kasey Johnson @ Mar 15th 2006 2:48PM

Not to be petty, but Half Life 2 was released 11/16/04, Resident Evil 4 came out 01/11/05(almost 2 months later) and San Andreas came out 10/25/2004(2 weeks before Halo 2)

After seeing the new trailer on the XBL Marketplace, Dead Rising looks kind of boring to me. I hope I'm wrong, though.
But I would agree with most in saying that Halo 3 won't be out this year. I imagine it will launch alongside the movie in 2007.
And I don't recall Bungie saying their next game wasn't Halo 3. Last I heard their official stance was essentially, "We haven't announced what our next project is, but we're working on it."
That "Forerunner" project sounds interesting.
Maybe instead of Halo 3, Rare will release a *good* game in November. That would be nice.

So let me understand this, you argument is that the PS3 is itself a "killer app?"
I don't quite follow your logic but allow me to reiterate what you stated to make sure I understnad.
You claim the new PS console can be marketed as a cheap computer, but it runs LINUX. LINUX is great for those that know how to use it (we use it around here at the university a lot) , but if you are to market a LINUX based machine as a "cheap computer" then you will not be very successful. The common PC user does not understand all the intricacies of LINUX nor does many tech support. They understand the underlying functions of the two main OS paltforms, WIN and OSX.
There are many faults in your argument to market the new PS console as a "cheap console," but I'll summarize it in a few words: "hypothetical, faulty, unsubstantial claim."
Next, you list titles (many of which are not yet confirmed for the new PS console) and then claim that the abbreviation should be enough to warrant it being a "killer app?" Please explain how showing YOUR list to a shopper will convince them to buy the new PS console.
Please don't underestimate the magnitude of the HALO franchise. Very few magazines feature video games, let alone video game producers being touted as "one of the most powerful in the industry."
Look it up in Bloomberg.
My argument from my previous post states that I find very little reason to play my PS2 aside from a few token RPGs and I don't know of any "killer apps" tentaively announced for the PS3.
Please correct your logic and argument before lashing at a question posed. Make sure you understand all the nuances involved in my claim and yours and then come back again.

That would automatically deterr me from buying a PS3 (for a little while), regardless of how much I want it. Yeah i took interest in huxley, untill i found out it was a zoned mmo like guild wars, i dont wanna see any limits on how large the battles can be , the appeal in an mmofps for me is the large scale battles with ground and air support in a persistant world.
huxley looks like its just going to offer lots of battlefield games going on separately and a city/lobby where you can pop out and chat, still looks promising tho, but not what the genre could be.

I love Smash Bros. as much and probably more than the next guy, but it's really not a mainstream hit. It's a very successful niche game. It's enough to make me get a Revolution. Hey bd. Seeing as how we haven't butted heads in the last 12 hours or so, I thought I'd take up the cross ;)
I respect your opinion about the PS3, but don't quite understand this quote:
"To some people, the PS3 is itself a killer App, due to all the technology it has. It is highly feasible, and it could spawn a group of consumers that bought PS3 for its non-gaming features."
What is a device without software to utilize it? I mean, with that logic, you should be a proud Xbox owner as it was clearly better "tech" than the PS2 even though it had fewer games on it.
The 360 has a triple core, 6 software threaded 3.2 GHz CPU as well. It also has 512MB of RAM and an *included* HDD (though only 13-20GB right now). For all we know, the PS3's HDD is an add on. In fact, previous Sony statements make that pretty clear. The PS3 DOES have a BD player if that tickles your fancy. However HD media junkies will be able to get an HD-DVD add on for the 360 if the price justifies it over a stand alone player. For all of us who don't care about HD media, I'm glad I didn't have to pay for it in my standard gaming device.
The Xbox was built on traditional PC archtecture using off the shelf PC parts. People modded it soon after release and added numerous hacks. It did not serve very well as a PC. The PS3 is hardly traditional PC architecture and uses a Cell CPU which is designed for streaming tasks and not intended for general computing. This is most likely why Steve Jobs was unimpressed with it for his company's line of PC's. Furthermore, a PS3, let's say priced at $500 (we'll even throw in the HDD for free) is NOT a "cheap computer". PC's with a 60GB HDD and 512MB or RAM can be found for less than that, usually with a monitor, keyboard, mouse, speakers and possibly a printer thrown in as well. Of course I have no idea why Sony would be interested in marketting the PS3 as such either. They sell the console at a loss. If a consumer bought a PS3 with the intention of replacing their home PC for word processing and email, Sony would lose money and gain none of it back through game sales or BD movies.
Your list of games for the PS3 is good. Here's mine:
The Outfit
Oblivion
Blazing Angels
Battle Field 2: Modern Combat
Tomb Raider Legend
RS Table Tennis (call me curious)
Over G Fighters
Prey
Dead Rising
Chromehounds
Godfather
Gears of War
Halo 3
Splinter Cell: Double Agent
Lost Odyssey
Stranglehold
Huxley
99 Nights
Blue Dragon
eNCHANT aRM
And other mindless racers, violence and madden based games ;)
To each his own, eh?
bd @ Mar 15th 2006 3:21PM
"So let me understand this, you argument is that the PS3 is itself a "killer app?"
I don't quite follow your logic but allow me to reiterate what you stated to make sure I understnad."
I explained myself pretty clearly. All the technologies it has are pretty much a Killer App for a lot of people (and I'm not talking about the inside, I'm talking about its use), just like Halo is a killer App for a lot of people, although not to me and to 90% of gamers in the world. Final Fantasy is more important to gamers than Halo will ever be. Japan won't like it, but america and Europe likes FF.
"You claim the new PS console can be marketed as a cheap computer, but it runs LINUX. LINUX is great for those that know how to use it (we use it around here at the university a lot) , but if you are to market a LINUX based machine as a "cheap computer" then you will not be very successful. The common PC user does not understand all the intricacies of LINUX nor does many tech support."
As I said before: If well implemented. There are a lot of Linux packages, some of which are easy to use. Wouldn't it be retarded to launch it with the hardest to use and with no GUI? I thought you were using your logic. Maybe too much "cheeze" on it.
"They understand the underlying functions of the two main OS paltforms, WIN and OSX.
There are many faults in your argument to market the new PS console as a "cheap console," but I'll summarize it in a few words: "hypothetical, faulty, unsubstantial claim.""
Read again: I didn't say "cheap console". I said: "Expensive console" / "Cheap computer". Your choice on how you view it, but try to comprehend what you read next time.
"Next, you list titles (many of which are not yet confirmed for the new PS console) and then claim that the abbreviation should be enough to warrant it being a "killer app?" Please explain how showing YOUR list to a shopper will convince them to buy the new PS console."
A lot of casual gamers will recognize "FF" and in Japan, they will recognize "DQ". Don't worry though, you can bet your ass and some extra cheeze that a lot of gamers will recognize the titles. But just for making you the favor: Final Fantasy, Tekken, Soul Calibur, Killzone, Dragon's Quest, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, and Virtua Fighter.
Granted, Halo is very popular, but in a global scale, it's not better than most games I mentioned, especially everyone's favorite RPGs.
"Please don't underestimate the magnitude of the HALO franchise. Very few magazines feature video games, let alone video game producers being touted as "one of the most powerful in the industry."
Look it up in Bloomberg."
Don't underestimate the franchises I just mentioned, please.
"My argument from my previous post states that I find very little reason to play my PS2 aside from a few token RPGs and I don't know of any "killer apps" tentaively announced for the PS3."
Has Halo 3 been officially announced? No.
Is any known franchise hitting the 360? 3 year old ports like FFXI don't count.
If you are talking about upcoming Killer apps, most of the games I mentioned will be coming out for PS3. I mean, why can I not mention them if you can mention Halo 3? Oh, I guess you can selectively choose which unannounced titles are Killer Apps and which aren't.
"Please correct your logic and argument before lashing at a question posed. Make sure you understand all the nuances involved in my claim and yours and then come back again."
Maybe you should try chewing the arguments better before claiming someone else's logic is flawed.
bd @ Mar 15th 2006 3:36PM
I don't deny the Xbox 1 was superior tech than the PS2. However, both had the same Video capabilities. Were you able to run Linux on Xbox 1 out of the box? No. Of course, it was modifiable, which was tempting. I don't know if that would have been a good idea, as it would have voided the warranty. Its emulation capabilities are great anyway, but I already had a PC for that.
This time, PS3 comes with Linux right out of the Box, and as I said, if marketed and implemented the right way (and the price is right), it could sell as many as the exaggerated cipher of 200 million consoles they pretend to sell.
Hell, when it reaches its lowest price, it could sell as a cheap computer in 3rd world countries.
Remember that PS3 also has a high end GPU, the latest standards for WiFi and HDTV (does a regular cheap computer include that?), and the BD player, let alone that it happens to play games, all without having to install them.
And nice list by the way, but I'll stay with:
Oblivion
Blazing Angels
Dead Rising
Lost Odyssey
99 Nights
Blue Dragon
eNCHANT aRM
Killer Instinct 360 (unannounced)
Lost World
Anything else I might get, but for much less than the original price (like Halo 3 or gears of War, which aren't my cup of tea, but should be good for 20 dollars).

"Granted, Halo is very popular, but in a global scale, it's not better than most games I mentioned, especially everyone's favorite RPGs." - bd
Quality is subjective, however the Halo series has outsold every game on your list and has won numourous awards and garnered much critical acclaim.
There is no single game that everyone likes. However there is no denying that Halo games have sold better than almost every other franchise. Sony and Nintendo would weep for a title as strong as the Halo series. Based on lifetime sales, the Halo franchise is stronger than giants like Metriod, Zelda, Sonic, Metal Gear and even Final Fantasy.
You are terribly underestimating the Halo series.
SuicideNinja @ Mar 15th 2006 4:01PM
Halo may not be the most amazing FPS ever (I still think AVP2 beats it hands down), but it changed things for many gamers. It has above average graphics, good controls, and handles multiplayer well (online and off). And most people know about it. It had been a long time since an online multiplayer game was so popular (AVP2 was the last I remember).
For me, Halo saved me from being bored for the last console generation. I previously was all about the Playstation brand, couldn't work with the other controllers, and didn't know much of the other two consoles. Halo 2 helped me make the jump to better gaming and got me playing everyday because of its fantastic online matchmaking (very easy and fast game setup compared to most others). Playing with a bunch of people at any time of the day (or night) appealed to a lot of gamers that didn't game on PCs.
From there, I purchased an Xbox and a Gamecube, leaving the PS2 nearly forgotten. I always try to get titles for the Xbox first if I can. Sure, there are some PS2 games I still want to try, but it feels like going back in time when playing a PS2. It shouldn't.
At least the PS3 sounds as though it won't be as disappointing for me as its predecessor. I can't wait for ACTUAL side-by-side comparisons.
Mykalson @ Mar 15th 2006 4:03PM
Art Guy:
While I do agree with you that Halo shouldn't be underestimating, you are sorely mistaken with putting it ahead of most of that incredibly illustrious list. Halo has sold about 14.3 million copies. Not to shabby. It beats Metroid (11 Mil). As for the rest of your list:
Final Fantasy - 60 million
Zelda - 48 million
Sonic - 38 million
Metal Gear Solid - 17 million
In fact, on the list of best selling franchises I read, it is next to last, and Metroid is the ONLY one it's outsold. Halo barely even belongs on the same list with most of these franchises.
Extracheeze @ Mar 15th 2006 4:08PM
I meant to say "cheap computer."
What applications can you run on it?
How will it function like a "cheap computer?"
You mentioned a lot of "ifs" but nothing concerete. What is my motivation to buy a PS3 at launch?
It sounds to me like you are doing a lot of speculation with no evidence to support it.
While HALO3 is not confirmed for the XBOX360, it is still a M$ owned franchise. Do you honestly think they will just let their flagship franchise slip through?
Stop speculating. Just...stop.
32_footsteps @ Mar 15th 2006 4:11PM
Art Guy, you better cough up some sales figures on that. While I might believe that the Halo series has sold better than the Metroid series, for example, you're making some pretty bold claims.
Also, doesn't it seem more than a little silly to anyone to brag about how great a game is before it comes out? Heck, I imagine a decent number of the games mentioned (like FF13 and SC4) aren't even in development yet. Unless you have the amazing 4D glasses being sold on eBay, bragging about games that don't exist is quite foolish.
After all, looking back, I bet the people who bragged about EarthBound for the N64 wish they could take back their words. The people who talked about how revolutionary Doom 3 would be aren't talking too loudly now. We all know how many people were made into John Romero's bitch by Daikatana. But if those examples aren't enough for you, I have three last words for you:
Duke Nukem Forever.
