I tried linux on my PS2. I got the kit from sony for 100$. It was a great idea. It took half a day to compile openssh and the distro was RH based. Now I use the hard drive for HDloader.

Is it just me who sees the connection between the delay of the PS3 and it being a HDD equipped media hub? They are waiting to get the managed copying part of the AACD ratified (which it isn't yet) before they can release it... It's as close to an official explanation as well without actually being official.

Tim,

The article mentions that when they refer to "2006", they are speaking in terms of their fiscal year. Businesses don't start their years in January! The new fiscal year begins in March.

Between the launch date and March 2007, they HOPE to have six million units shipped.

striegs is only right so far as spacial dimensia relates to human perception through sight and that alone.

It is simply *wrong* to say that anything greater than 3 dimensions is relegated to "mathematics or theoretical physics" - n-dimensional space is used all the time in REAL WORLD (read: not theoretical) engineering applications, most notably in control systems where every additional dimension gives a the controller greater precision.

What makes his arguement more bogus is the use of the term "Euclidean plane" when it is, in fact, Euclidean space that tradtionally defines n-dimensional space (where "n" has, literally, infinitly many possibilities - as many as you want it to have).

Vector algebra could most definately benefit from the ability to do more complex matrix algebra by adding more dimensions; however, computers have long been able to efficently do operations on many more than 3 or 4 dimensions for decades now - so the whole "4th dimension" thing is just Sony talking out of it's ass either way (whether they meant a 4th, visible dimension or 4th dimension vector algebra) - but I just though it was important to point out that Euclidean algebra DOES NOT limit us to 3 dimensions!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euclidean_space

"Let R denote the field of real numbers. For any non-negative integer n, the space of all n-tuples of real numbers forms an n-dimensional vector space over R sometimes called real coordinate space and denoted Rn."

Oh Jeff, how unsubstantiated your comments are.

:: "Sony has a couple of advantages here, the first of which is that they've literally been sitting twiddling their thumbs waiting for this AACS thing to get worked out. They're not rushing anything. They had planned to have this thing out by April and now they've basically got an *extra* six months to work with." ::

If this is the case, then why didn't developers get final devkits months ago? Developers don't need machines with copy protection so they can make their games on final hardware. Sony's saying they're not getting final kits until Summer. Seems to me Sony's trying to use DRM as their scapegoat for a vast myriad of other issues. If you believe Sony isn't rushing anything, ... well you'll find out at launch I suppose.

:: "The second advantage they have is that they control most of the major components themselves. The Cell chip is theirs. The BD drive is theirs. The GPU is probably the only thing that could really trip them up, but that GPU is not all that exotic anymore - I mean nVidia's been selling basically the same thing for PC's for a few months now." ::

Microsoft owns the rights to: the CPU, the GPU, and the chipset (North and South Bridge). They can produce those chips with any company they want; they do not have to go through IBM, ATI, or SiS. They can use any DVD drive from a large number of manufacturing partners. Microsoft owns the IP to most of the Xbox 360's major components. What was out of their hands was memory chips and those lead to the delays. Same could happen with Sony.

I'm sorry, but I've got to chuckle at Striegs and Sanchinos. While your posts were indeed very authoritative sounding with all the technical mumbo jumbo thrown about, I would be willing to bet my left testicle that if you asked Krazy Ken what "Euclidean" was, his first guess would be a sexually transmitted disease. The guy is a Sony PR front man infamous for outlandish remarks and speeches and here we are trying to decode his latest outburst like he's just given us the next Newtonian Law...

Kudos for the valiant attempt guys, but the source just doesn't justify an in depth mathematical, metaphysical or even logical explanation ;)

I dont get "fanboys" except for the boy part, I dont care which side eigther. I dont own a 360, but I want one cuz it looks cool, I dont own a PS2 cuz I bought an xbox, i dont hate the PS2. I also own a GC and I like it as well. I own a GB Adv. SP, like it, and still would like to get a PSP, cuz it looks cool.

Basically what I'm saying is stop with the Sony kills MS crap, I dont peticularly like any 1 company period, cuz all they are trying to do is milk us out of money with cool toys, Im not brand loyal, when the PS3 come out and I can actually see it and compare it to the 360 I may change my mind, and want a PS3 cuz its I personally think its cooler, or better in some way that I personally like.

All these things are based on what I like personally, not what Sony or MS or Nintendo tell me to like because it is the next generation of what I had before.

So stop being fanboys and try using your brain to figure out what you like and how each console, and anything else for that matter, fits in with what you want.

With Sony simultaneously releasing in multiple countries in November, you can bet the PS3 is going to be scarce for MOST this year. I'm guessing even those that pre-order will be affected. Look how long it took Microsoft to sort all that out... actually, is Microsoft even out of the woods on that?

This should give both Nintendo and Microsoft a boost around the holiday, assuming their consoles are readily available for sale.

LOL @ your claim. Kutaragi is an Electrical Engineer, and he worked in designing the PS1, the "emotion engine", the Cell, among other things.

Not only that, but in Japan education is much better overall than in most countries, if not above all. So you can bet that the stakes of him knowing what Euclidian Spaces are, are pretty high considering his resume.

I really hope Sanchinos isn't a math major or anything, because I have a real aversion to being [er, inappropriately handled]. Still, please let this humble compsci major clarify his statements, as I think this is just a case of a few small misunderstandings.

It was never my intention to imply that the study of four-or-greater dimensions is applicable only to math and physics. I regularly use four-dimensional arrays in programming, if only because I derive great pleasure in storing information about information about information about the data in my arrays. I did say that it was reserved mostly for the sciences, since "science" is one of those political buzzwords that can be used to describe anything (although that may depend on what your definition of "is" is). I myself haven't heard of many applications of a fourth dimension outside of topology and quantum mechanics, although, admittedly, all of my attempts to understand the latter have ended with me lying in a fetal position, sobbing uncontrollably.

I also wasn't using the term "Euclidean plane" to refer to just any n-dimensional space, I was using it to refer only to the two-dimensional graphs that Mr. Semega used to draw his squiggly lines on. If it's any consolation, I do currently have an F in Calculus. ;)

By the way, 32_Footsteps, tesseracts have been one of the most prominent facets of gaming since the days of the NES. How the hell else are my reluctant heroes expected to cart around 99 potions, ethers, antidotes, and phoenix downs?

Wow, you people honestly think the ps3 it the greatest thing ever created. Do u think that the average family will pay over $425 for a game console. U guys are just hardcore gamers not the average consumer. Sony is killing themselves by making this machine. I don’t have that kind of money to just play high end games. Nintendo will win this battle with there price alone. Mom and dad are going to see a $425 Sony and $150 Nintendo think about it. This is Sony’s last console. I for one have a life and will not pay for this expensive kids toy.

As 158; 161; 169; 199; and many nore have already pointed out they will ship 6 million units WORLDWIDE by the end of the fiscal year which ENDS in MARCH '07.

As for the 4D -thing, games will be games and technically, isn't time a feature many games already use? Zelda, Blinx, the Sim games and so on.

The REAL reason for the delay? two words, BD-ROM and PRICE.

They want the PS3 to be cheap enough so they don't scare off the average consumer/gamer and the only way they can do that is if they wait. This also to make sure they have some playable games when they release it. The PS3 will be more expensive but still affordable (though the younger demographic will have some problem because of less or no income)

The Online service is another matter altogether. Though it was in the end inevitable since MS and Nintendo are already doing it. We have barely scratched the surface and there are many more things to consider. Games, HD questions, even other features like multimedia capabilities.

Lest not forget about the no-price drop on PS2. Could they be compensating for the PS3 or PSP? or do they expect the PS2 to remain as their major console even long after the PS3 has been released? Does that mean the PS3 will be more than just another competitor with xbox360?

Many questions unanswered

Striegs, does this mean that a tesseract collapses in n-dimensional space should an item ever be gathered in quantities of 100 within its boundaries? This might be a breakthrough for video game mathematics.

As for matters that don't touch upon the ana/kata axis, I know it's quite possible for Sony to actually pull off a simultaneous worldwide launch of the console. They have the resources.

My question is purely a logistical one. Sony (particularly its video game arm) has shown in the past to be utterly incompetent when it comes to hardware launches. The American PS2 launch was infamously problematic, and that was 7 months after the Japanese launch. I'll grant that it's quite possible that Sony has their act together, but the PSP launch did not inspire any confidence in my heart regarding Sony.

Perhaps our heroes are in possession of a separate bag of holding for each individual item, which then reaches its volumetric limit once the number of items inside exceeds 100. Obviously we'll need to explore this mystery further, hopefully with the aid of a large government grant.

Now, Sony could, theoretically, spend madd bux and open a whole slew of PS3 production facilities to meet worldwide demand come launch day, but there's a few things wrong with this. First of all, once you spend money on the capital to get each facility up and running, you don't want to have that facility cease operating for quite some time. Remember that demand for a new console is greatest during the holiday season of its launch year, and while it would be nice if everyone who wanted a PS3 could get their hands on one immediately, demand for the console will eventually fall off and you'll either have to shut down a few plants or settle for producing a huge surplus of consoles.

Another thing to note is that the price of producing a console decreases with time as better, cheaper, and faster ways of producing the components become available. If Sony produced 100 million PS3s during the month of July 2006, stopped all production, and then just sold off their huge inventory over the next few years, they'd be making less profit per console sold than if they'd been produced gradually over time. Eventually it's these cheaper means of production that allow for things such as price cuts, which spur sales even further.

Finally--as every consumer knows--the less available something is, the more desirable it becomes, which means that people are willing to pay more for a rare must-have console than if the rivers were literally flowing with PS3s (peculiar mental imagery, that).

Guaranteed, the PS3 will be rather expensive when it finally comes out, or at least rather more expensive than we're used to seeing new consoles debuting for (especially if the fears of a separately-sold HDD are not assuaged). Regardless, hardcore gamers and fanboys will gobble it up, while ordinary gift-giving consumers with an interest in the console only by proxy will see the frenzy from afar and conclude that it must be well worth the coin, no matter the MSRP.

As a totally certified financial analyst of the totally certifiable financial analyzing firm Iguanabomination Unltd., I hereby decree that the PS3 will launch in Japan and the U.S. this November with 500,000 units per territory, and will launch in Europe this December with, oh, twelve (give or take).

I am sure you don't mean to, but the constant bitching everytime a news piece about the PS3 comes up makes it look like you lack confidence in the 360. If you are really that satisfied with your purchase and really have that much faith in what Microsoft is doing, then who really gives a rat's ass what Sony is or is not going to do?

I am glad the PS3 will be coming out this year. Nothing spurs innovation like a strong competitor.

And for those stating Sony is copying everything under the video game sun, I feel a need to remind you that Microsoft was not the first with a home video game console. So, from a certain point of view, the whole XBOX concept has been a "copy."

Yes, agree whole heartedly with all said. But you didn't include all the [flame] that seem to think that nintendo invented game consoles & fun games. Hang on, weren't pong & space invaders around before mario.....Hang on, wasn't atari & others making consoles before nintendo. I think so, I remember everybody having a atari 2600 before nintendo came along & brainwashed all the [flame] into thinking that nintendo invented & popularised video games & home console systems with their revolutionary 2d sidescrollers.

All next gen consoles should be great, accept it [flame]. Sony's online hub may only be slightly better than their last effort, or it may be awesome....Who knows really. No one really.. so like the above guy said, stop talking crap with all the negative, naysaying, [flame] crap. It shows how [flame] you are, if you claim to have a 360, yet feel it neccassary to go to a PS3 related blogg to sony bash.

Sony don't lie, they just exagerate the truth. As my dear old daddy uncle [flame] used to say, "never let the truth get in the way of a good yarn"

Kenny Kutaragi never lies.... He said PS2 would have toy story like graphics....If you bought the movie & played it on your PS2, technically he was right. Also if you snorted 1kg of coke, tilted your head to the side & squinted your eyes some of the games were very close to toy story graphics........ And his jacking into the matrix was completely true to, I bought the game on PS2 & when it was loading for 25mins, it said on the load screen, Jacking into matrix. See kenny never lies.

All jokes aside though.. Sony are the only ones that overhype & market. That is why I shall quote this totally truth ridden spiel from a 360 brochure I got from EB's (I saw the same comment in other brochures like Kmart too).

"Simply put, gaming on the 360 os like playing the lead character in your own movie or makes you feel like you are leading your favourite sports team onto the field in the grand final. New realism is a function of the amazing power & graphics of Xbox 360 combined with a new generation of richer, more detailed games".

Ahahahahahahahahahhahahahah Yes, sony are the only full of shit hype mongers here....MS fanboys will try to tell us that sony wrote that spiel for MS next.
Heres some more genius maketing by MS

"Wireless Freedom..... Even turn your 360 off & on....all with no strings attached".

Amazing, never thought you's be able to play the thing wirelessly, then turn it off as well. I thought after you'd finished playing a game with "no strings attached", you'd have to get up & plug a wire in to turn it off. Wow, they should incorporate this technology into tv's as I won't have to make my wife get up to turn it on & off. I'm glad they are smartly marketing this feature, as if nintendo gets a hold of it & throws it in the revolution, nintendo [flame] will claim that nintendo invented it & MS copied them.

Hang on heres some more
"Revolutionise your lounge room with all new music, movie & phot features".

Revolutionise hey, are they plugging their own product with that, or nintendo's upcoming console.

Heres more
"The most powerful next gen gaming experience"

Duh, its the only one

More
"Gaming & entertainment experiences that make you believe they are real".

Hmmmm, I suggest you [flame] if you start thinking a game is real. Otherwise you'll just be another [flame].

Yep Sony are the hype whores. MS obviously just stick to the truth without exageration or over inflated egotistical ramblings....They are an american company after all, & we all know that americans would never do that.

Marketing like this prove it
"The most powerful console, even more powerful than any PC currently in production"

Does that sound true?

"Welcome to the HD era. Enjoy astounding (yes astounding) movie-like game graphics on either your high definition or standard television set".

Hang on, I can't be welcomed to the hd era if I don't have a hd tv, can I?

"Built from the ground up for wireless age. Enjoy precise control & hassle free netwoking without cables"

They forgot to mention that some machines can be used to cook marshmellows on. take that sony, with your george foreman grille. Our machine might not look like one, but it certainly gets as hot as one.

"Your favourites come with you- Xbox 360 is backwards compatible with top selling Xbox games, including Halo 2 (requires hard drive)"

Cool, buy a premium pack with HD to play halo 2 & 1, now thats how you do backwards compatibility sony...you [flame]....

"Connect your existing MP3 player, digital camera & other devices".

I thought only a minority of brand MP3 players worked with it?

Any way, this completes the crap MS spew out on one page of a brochure. No marketing, hype & drizzle their whatsoever.

Kizza, you forgot that Microsoft is also lying when saying "everything will be wireless" when in fact, you have to buy an adapter for Xbox to be WiFi, while every other console, including portables, is WiFi enabled out of the box. Not only that, but the adapter, which doesn't have the latest standards of Wireless connectivity, costs 100 dollars.

Also they say that Xbox 360 will cost less than PS3 when PS3 comes out, they're not telling the whole truth; if you want something similar (but not quite like) PS3, that is, HD-DVD and Wireless Internet Connection, you'll need to spend at least 300 bucks more; and that's not counting an even bigger hard drive, nor the fact that Blu-ray, Bluetooth, and other components on the PS3 are theoretically more expensive.

You forgot to mention too that Microsoft is such a lying and audacious bitch, that they tout their gaming library as "THE BEST GAMING LIBRARY EVER" next to each Xbox 360 Kiosk, when we all know that is at best yet to be seen, and at worst a blatant lie.

Let's not forget that they said that eventually, 100% Backwards Compatibility would be reached. Now that was some bold claim, considering it's very difficult. Many gamers know what happened afterwards, but for those who don't, there are little more than 200 titles which are backwards compatible. Why is no Mortal Kombat compatible with the Xbox 360? There are lots of fighting games yet to be enabled, and I've seen the same god damned list for 4 months, except they've taken some titles off the list. I don't care why, Microsoft lied on that too.
