Halo 3 no more -- meet Forerunner
An Xbox.com forum poster, DM Duo Maxwell, is claiming to have reproduced, in its entirety, an exclusive Game
Informer article from the upcoming April issue that reveals details about Bungie's next project—Duo Maxwell
did not supply an actual scan because Xbox.com does not permit images that violate copyright laws. According to the
post, Bungie's next project will be a Halo game for the Xbox 360, currently codenamed, Forerunner. In
Halo lore, the Forerunners are a technologically
advanced race that mysteriously vanished from the universe. The source reports that the game will feature "huge persistent worlds" using a modified Halo 2 engine. The main campaign will still feature Master Chief and will showcase 4-player co-op. The missions, however, will not be linear, nor will objectives been required. For example, if players are tasked with capturing a weapons depot, but decide to forego the assignment, then they will loose the opportunity to seize the additional weaponry and, in effect, will hand these weapons over to the enemy.
For now, we have to write this off as pure speculation (read: April Fool's gag). But these new details are certainly tantalizing and in line with Bungie's method of revealing a game piece by piece, until the puzzle is complete. Look to E3 for a major announcement.

This is totally fake. April Fools edition.
Here is the Bungie rep, on a Bungie fan site saying this is false.

I don't know if I'm ready to call "foul" on this one. There seems like too much detail in too limited a scope (if that makes sense) for it to be a complete prank. The whole multiplayer angle makes a lot of sense given Bungie's obsession with it (multiplayer expansion, anyone?), as does the "cause/effect" dynamic they allude to. Either way, it's a very cool read - and a game like "Forerunner" sounds pretty badass.

"In Halo lore, the Forerunners are a technologically advanced race that mysteriously vanished from the universe."
It sounds like the Metroid Prime Hunters story. :P
KerBob97 @ Mar 16th 2006 12:50PM
I was actually kind of hoping for something like this. Something in the Halo universe, but with a SWars Battlefront 2 feel.
Sjohn @ Mar 16th 2006 12:58PM
Does this sound kind of like a Halo version of The Elder Scrolls Series to anybody else? If so, this could be really interesting. It also almost leads up to what could be a Halo MMORPG which I don't think would be that great. I'd much rather have something like TES that has a Halo theme than to have tons of Master Chiefs running around aimlessly.
All in all, a lot of companies seem to use the 3rd game as a "Prequel" this very well could be true.
Ninegauger @ Mar 16th 2006 1:06PM
Too bad it's fake... it actually sounded interesting unlike the other Halo games.
Crummy @ Mar 16th 2006 1:09PM
Personally I think that the ideas proposed sound a little too far-reaching (especially coming from the previous Halo games) to be real. As the original post said... april fools?
Colin Robertson @ Mar 16th 2006 1:23PM
It AINT April 1st yet! This does not seem so far fetched at all. If they are trying to release this game when the PS3 launches (which I doubt) then the game would have to be knee deep in development at this point. We should start seeing info pretty damn soon, this looks like it could be the tip of the iceberg.
I'm not sure where that image is from, but I could imagine Halo 3 looking that good... The story, I can't vouch for, sounds cool as hell, but I've never played any of the other Halo games in single player mode.
Gin @ Mar 16th 2006 1:24PM
After fully reading the article, it kinda makes me glad to know that "Halo 3/Forerunner" won't be released in 2006 but rather Fall 2007. I can't wait to see what Bungie can do with all that time and all those ideas with the Xbox 360's techonlogy. All I know is that I better see SOMETHING this coming E3 2007.
Exo @ Mar 16th 2006 1:26PM
You cant tell its fake about how it contridicts itself. If its about the ancient race that died, then there is no way master cheif could be in it.
JS @ Mar 16th 2006 1:30PM
The Halo franchise resembles the Matrix franchise (movies, not games) almost exactly. A great first installment that was meant as a stand alone but due to popular demand and of course $ they decide to make a second one to continue to the story but it ends up sucking one way or another as it could never live up to expectations setout by the first installment. Then comes the third installment that closes it all up for everyone and has the final, end all, battle and its good as it concludes the series...but leaves you wondering why they made the other two if the 1st was just that good. All in all, good series of movies/games when viewed as a whole but lacking when viewed individually (except the 1st one).
But that said, Bungie really needs to kicks it up a notch and use some of Microsoft's huge cash reserves to make a mind blowing game that will challenge the audience both mentally and physically and create a new concept on an old game (think Mario, Zelda, why where they so successful when it was basically the same thing each time?). I really hope Bungie can pull it off and im rooting for them to make a successful end to this saga, otherwise we will refer to the Halo franchise as "why didnt they stop after the first one" that happens more often than not. Good Luck Bungie!
With all that said, I will still probably buy it regardless to close a chapter in my life, I just hope its a happy ending!
Nmaster @ Mar 16th 2006 1:33PM
Wait, what is everyone freaking out about? I don't see any reason this can't be true, minus the rename. "Forerunner" is probably just a code name for the game or something. That aside, why can't this be true? Because the developers are trying new game mechanics? WTF? I mean, what's described is still Halo, just with some interesting new features. And the only thing people can say to that is "April Fools"?
That's really sad when the industry has sunk to a point where this happens:
Gamer 1: Hey, did you hear "Insert-Game-Series-Here #16" is going to do something innovative?
Gamer 2: ...liar...
Babu @ Mar 16th 2006 1:38PM
The above comments are the kind of comments you get from people that really havent looked into halo.
I actually decided to read up on this as it sparked my curiosity. I (being a person that completed both Halo I and II campaigns) found the lore quite interesting.
The halo games have a deep story that you wouldnt know as much about without reading their books. So when you get people posting stuff like "It sounds like the Metroid Prime Hunters story. :P" or "Does this sound kind of like a Halo version of The Elder Scrolls Series to anybody else?"... Although the Halo story may have similar elements to many of your favorite games, it is, in my opinion (being a nintendo fanboy) one of the most highly developed stories in any of the games around. The whole halo lore is like a big puzzle where every halo game solves a piece of it. And if you played the game and payed attention to the story you would understand this.
The first game introduces the Halo, a forerunner technology, and introduces Guilty Spark, both essential pieces to the story. Guilty Spark supposedly knew the forerunners, meanwhile the halos are technology created by the forerunners. And in Halo II you discover that the halos are devices used to get rid of the flood by destroying all life in the galaxy therefore depleating the floods food source.
There are also small hints along the way that suggest that perhaps the humans are the forerunners, or maybe that they are descendants of the forerunners.
So the joystiq post here offers up some speculation that is one-hundred percent feasible. And the greater depth of gameplay discussed above is also feasible.
Anyone remember Mech Warrior (3 was it) where you were offered a mission to either save your sister or capture a munitions plant. And if you captured the munitions, you got the best mech in the game, and your sister died. Well, this type of gameplay is not revolutionary, and it is definetely a great way of engrossing a player in the story.
I have a feeling the next installment of Halo will definetely add even more storytelling and a greater sense of being part of the halo story.
Evil Inside @ Mar 16th 2006 1:39PM
Sounds pretty cool, but wouldn't having non-linear missions make following a linear storyline very difficult to pull off?
Pete @ Mar 16th 2006 1:41PM
This could be true, or just as likely the person read a preview for STALKER on PC and put the same concept in a Halo game. It's serioulsy exactly the same as what's planned for that game.
Lee @ Mar 16th 2006 1:44PM
'Halo' is a huge brand name and MS would never let them change it if they want it to be the xbox360 killer app.
Mack Swift @ Mar 16th 2006 1:49PM
I wonder if this is the exclusive version of Halo 2 for Windows Vista. If it's a modified version of the Halo 2 graphics engine, that could translate into a game that could show off DirectX 10 and Vista's graphics capabilites with an established brand name.
Jeremy Wright @ Mar 16th 2006 1:54PM
Lika Babu, I don't see any reason this couldn't be true. On the other hand, we have no reason think it is... But nothing says it couldn't be.
"Forerunner" would just be a codename. Bungie is a Microsoft company. EVERY product has a code name.
In terms of story and mechanics, none of this (even the inclusion of Master Chief) seems far fetched to me... Especially given what happened in Halo 2.
Will it happen? Who knows. I'll wait until I can actually see the game to make a determination on whether its good or bad. But none of the post makes this *impossible*. Even a Bungie rep commenting about how it isnt' happening... Which is what Bungie always does.
Conrad Quilty-Harper @ Mar 16th 2006 1:58PM
Ironically this sounds very similar to the original concept for Halo when Bungie was an independent studio. One of the original plans for Halo was that there were to be no loading times and the game would be one massive level with a multitude of open objectives.
SuicideNinja @ Mar 16th 2006 2:01PM
"Sounds pretty cool, but wouldn't having non-linear missions make following a linear storyline very difficult to pull off?"
Not at all. Think about Final Fantasy X-2. The missions setup isn't linear, allowing you to skip a lot of side-story. I could have done without the Charlie's Angels theme though.
Anyway, I think the Flood is somewhat a twist off of Aliens. Aliens seem more dangerous to me though. But the result after the parasite takes over is completely different.
Sure, the idea of dealing with technology that a great race left behind sounds like Metroid Prime, but the purpose of the Forerunner Technology is totally different than the Chozo/Luminoth Technology. Just think "increased personal power" vs "annihilation of all sentient life".

Speaking at the unveiling of Rare's Viva Pi? today in New York, Microsoft Game Studios' General Manager Shane Kim made some interesting comments regarding the next Halo game.
First of all it could seem like the next Halo game, or the mythical Halo 3 as Kim called it, will not be coming to Xbox 360 before the end of 2006. Since Kim named the recently announced Viva Pi? as "most important game of 2006”, it does seem like Microsoft is expecting Bungie’s next project to be ready some time in 2007. Of course this is pure speculation, but we do agree with CVG that it is highly unlikely that Microsoft would rate “Halo 3” less important than Viva Pi?.
However the most interesting bit of info to come out of Shane Kim when questioned about “Halo 3” was that an announcement regarding the next Halo game was just around the corner.
"We'll be talking about anything we're doing in the Halo universe - whether that's Halo 3 as I call it or anything else - at the right time. That time will be soon."
And maybe even more interesting is the way he referred to the game, “anything we're doing in the Halo universe”, could this possibly mean that the next Halo will not be anything like Halo and Halo 2 at all? Could Bungie be working on some sort of squad-based shooter, or maybe an RTS game set in the Halo universe? Or could it be an RPG or even a MMO game?
The only thing certain is that we will know soon enough, most likely in May when E3 kicks off.

I don't care if this is true or not. But god help them if they pit me against more of the Flood. They drug down both games. It just wasn't fun to play that part of the game. They could make me team up with the covenant to fight a new enemy like the "forerunners" and I'd be cool with it, but no god damn flood.

New rumors suggest the announcement of the next game in the Halo series is imminent, but if you are expecting a direct sequel to Halo 2, then you might be in for a surprise.
At yesterday's press event held in New York for the announcement of Viva Pi?, Shane Kim said “We're not here to talk about the mythical Halo 3, as I call it".
He continued: "We'll be talking about anything we're doing in the Halo universe - whether that's Halo 3 as I call it or anything else - at the right time. That time will be soon."
This last comment not only confirms the next game in the Halo series will be announced soon, probably at E3 2006, but also suggests that it might not be Halo 3 as everyone expects.
Either Bungie is working on more than one game set in the Halo universe, or the third game in the series won’t be a direct sequel to Halo 2.
According to the latest issue of Game Informer, Bungie's next project is called Forerunner and although the game belongs to the Halo series, it might actually be a prequel with a storyline set in the Halo universe, but focused on the origins of the Forerunners, their connection to humanity, and the Covenants.
An insider source supposedly told Game Informer that the upcoming Halo movie will be based on the Halo: The Fall of Reach book with the game complementing the movie, and therefore being a prequel as well.
Whatever the case may be, one thing is for sure…we’ll soon learn of Bungie’s secret project for the Xbox 360

Oh, come on, guys! Did you not know that Halo is a near 100% rip-off of Larry Niven's "Ringworld" novels? This article has got to be a joke, as in the Ringworld series, it was revealed in later novels that the Ringworld was built by an extinct race called the "Protectors".
If this isn't a joke, then Larry Niven probably isn't too happy right now. Or did Microsoft already pay him some royalties. Anyone know?
Neoxkc @ Mar 16th 2006 2:19PM
The only reason I believe this, is that in the actual article, it states that this is not an April Fool's Joke. If it was why would they say it's not, besides later in the issue they have a different section for april fools stuff, and Halo 3, so I think it is legit. Also, in one of the weekly updates they state it(next project) is playable.
Bart @ Mar 16th 2006 2:21PM
Also - (more on Ringworld) - it was later revealed that humans ARE the Protectors, but in a simpler form (humans can become Protectors by eating some plant - long story).

MosquitoControl @ Mar 16th 2006 2:28PM
Dropping the name Halo would be odd. They'd do it Halo: Forerunner.
4 player co-op and non-linear missions would be amazing, at least if 4 player co-op can be split screen.
Bungie denied it, sure, but last week Sony denied the postponed PS3 date, and a month ago Nintendo denied that the new Zelda could use the Rev wand.

To be a little phonetical; foreRUNNER. Runner! runner? Marathon!
We all know, at least those who followed Bungies history that Halo was meant to be a sequel to Marathon in its early days, only to be bought out by Microsoft and transformed (a few references aside) into an entirely new game.

Here we go, more proof that ONLY PS3 are gulity of hype & overstretchings of the facts. This text is copied word for word from an australian 360 brochure from EB's. You'll find no marketing bullshit here. This is MS after all, an american company, & we all know americans wouldn't be guilty of hype. Not the poor ol' innocent americans. Of course it's the japs that are the worst offeneders. They won't buy 360's because they hate americans (according to MS fanbitches anyway). Read these truth riddled marketing tactics on MS's brochure. Some Very believable stuff here.
"Simply put, gaming on the 360 os like playing the lead character in your own movie or makes you feel like you are leading your favourite sports team onto the field in the grand final. New realism is a function of the amazing power & graphics of Xbox 360 combined with a new generation of richer, more detailed games".
Ahahahahahahahahahhahahahah Yes, sony are the only full of shit hype mongers here....MS fanboys will try to tell us that sony wrote that spiel for MS next.
Heres some more genius maketing by MS
"Wireless Freedom..... Even turn your 360 off & on....all with no strings attached".
Amazing, never thought you's be able to play the thing wirelessly, then turn it off as well. I thought after you'd finished playing a game with "no strings attached", you'd have to get up & plug a wire in to turn it off. Wow, they should incorporate this technology into tv's as I won't have to make my wife get up to turn it on & off. I'm glad they are smartly marketing this feature, as if nintendo gets a hold of it & throws it in the revolution, nintendo fanbitches will claim that nintendo invented it & MS copied them.
Hang on heres some more
"Revolutionise your lounge room with all new music, movie & phot features".
Revolutionise hey, are they plugging their own product with that, or nintendo's upcoming console.
Heres more
"The most powerful next gen gaming experience"
Duh, its the only one
More
"Gaming & entertainment experiences that make you believe they are real".
Hmmmm, I suggest you see a pyschiatrist if you start thinking a game is real. Otherwise you'll just be another crazy americanised nutjob shooting up your local mcdonalds because your cheeseburger was cold.
Yep Sony are the hype whores. MS obviously just stick to the truth without exageration or over inflated egotistical ramblings....They are an american company after all, & we all know that americans would never do that.
Marketing like this prove it
"The most powerful console, even more powerful than any PC currently in production"
Does that sound true?
"Welcome to the HD era. Enjoy astounding (yes astounding) movie-like game graphics on either your high definition or standard television set".
Hang on, I can't be welcomed to the hd era if I don't have a hd tv, can I?
"Built from the ground up for wireless age. Enjoy precise control & hassle free netwoking without cables"
They forgot to mention that some machines can be used to cook marshmellows on. take that sony, with your george foreman grille. Our machine might not look like one, but it certainly gets as hot as one.
"Your favourites come with you- Xbox 360 is backwards compatible with top selling Xbox games, including Halo 2 (requires hard drive)"
Cool, buy a premium pack with HD to play halo 2 & 1, now thats how you do backwards compatibility sony...you idiots....
"Connect your existing MP3 player, digital camera & other devices".
I thought only a minority of brand MP3 players worked with it?
Any way, this completes the crap MS spew out on one page of a brochure. No marketing, hype & drizzle their whatsoever.

Companies have a long history of denying things until they're ready to release it. While the evidence here seems more likely, never believe a denial on its face.

Hey Enigma before you get hot on Nintendo's originality, Metroid came out in 86 and Marathon in 94. :/
As for the news:
Well, if it is a sequel, having "huge, persistent worlds" would make sense seeing they could answer what happens to the remaining Halos and probably oversee that they are destroyed.
If it's a prequel, maybe you play the people who put the Flood away, or hopefully (in my case) not have to deal with them at all and instead it's like a giant war with other races. Maybe they can do something with the Covenenent Race that was taken out of Halo 2 (it shows it as concept art and is referred to in an omitted cutscene).
I'd go with a prequel though.
Spartacus @ Mar 16th 2006 4:40PM
Hey kizza, last time we talked you were telling off everyone for trolling the Sony news and how some posters are so immature for doing so... Now here you are, spouting off nonsense and trash talk about the 360 (which you claim you're going to buy) that isn't even true.
You claim the 360 makes false claims about it's power. There wasn't a PC in Nov. 2005 that had a graphics card like the 360. In fact, there still isn't.
You claim the 360 overheats. Of course you don't own one, so you're simply going off hearsay, but I can tell you for the record, my 360 gets no warmer than my PC. I can also say the PS3 will get very warm too. That's what electronics with a lot of transistors do.
You claim the 360 only works with a few digital devices. Again, you have no experience yourself, but hey, let's keep spewing nonsense. For the record, the 360 recognizes just about any USB device you plug into it.
Please, take your 5 negative stars and leave. Not only are you a highly misinformed poster, you are also a total hypocrite.

Go to Bungie.Net, page through the forums, and there is no OFFICIAL denial. There are mods saying that it is "donkey doo," but again, that is not a real denial. Go to Bungie.Net tomorrow for the Weekly Update, and if it is a real denial there, then so be it. Shane Kim's comments continue to make this look more real.
And for those of you that played HALO 2, at the end of the game, they were heading back to Earth to find the Ark that the Forerunners had supposedly placed there. Hmmmm, Forerunners. Could be true.
