Sega to capitalize on Nintendogs success
Famitsu via DS-X2 has revealed new screenshots of a
Nintendogs inspired Sega game for the Nintendo DS. Still unannounced, the title uses colored dogs with big
heads. We guess that might work...From the screen at the right, it even appears that you can digitally pet the pups.

LAME!
what makes Nintendogs great. (Yes, I own it.) is that it is original.
This is a rip off, and therefore, not worth mine or anyone else's time.

Sega could make it happen. I probably wouldn't get it over Nintendogs unless it has some real big features - Online play, much better dog walk system etc.
gnome @ Mar 21st 2006 10:23AM
I guess they could have gone with the blue spikey and very fast dogs... Would be nice...

Actually, It is based on a very popular plush in japan called puppourri. It never became that popular in NA (probably because they only sold at Limited Too), but it has a strong cult following here with the plush import market and hello kitty fanbase.

Let this vision of gaming serve as an example of why I no longer own any Nintendo products.
Gonzo @ Mar 21st 2006 10:37AM
They're going to have to make it allot trippier than that to make it better than nintendogs. Those things look like the kind of dog you win at a carnival.
Art Guy @ Mar 21st 2006 10:56AM
RocketSeason/Matt - Original? LOL. Possibly the best, but certainly not original. There have been pet simulators on the market forever.
Dogz, which first came out over ten years ago, is already up to version 5. They even had a version on the GameBoy in 2000 and 2005. Nintendogs hit the market after Dogz, and therefore is not the "original" in the genre.
Nintendogs is clearly a rip off of older games, it just has better graphics and a unique control interface to take advantage of the hardware.
Cameorn @ Mar 21st 2006 11:05AM
#5. So you don't enjoy a vision of a wide array of software across multiple genres delivered on reliable hardware?
I can understand that.
doubtful @ Mar 21st 2006 11:10AM
Looks like the offspring of an Animal Crossing: Wild World catridge with a Nintendogs cartridge. I'm going to have to start keeping my games apart when they're in my bag. Those dirty, dirty cartridges.
Jay @ Mar 21st 2006 11:16AM
#5 what an idiot. I had an ecounter with a similar style of person the other day. "have fun with Toad, Celda... [on the Revolution]"
Ignorance is smashing. Of course Toad was the only character, of course dog games are the only games on Nintendo machines. love it!
Anyways I'm about to pop online with Mario Kart so cheerio.
joshua @ Mar 21st 2006 11:16AM
wow i can't believe there are people who believe nintedogs is the first puppy simulation game
Varian @ Mar 21st 2006 11:34AM
Nintendogs WAS the first major puppy game. The reason for the clones is because of the huge sales numbers.
Face it, guys. Nintendogs has outsold Halo. It will soon outsell the first Metal Gear Solid. This game is HUGE. Imitators are flooding the market because of that fact.
RocketSeason @ Mar 21st 2006 11:38AM
Artguy-"Nintendogs is clearly a rip off of older games, it just has better graphics and a unique control interface to take advantage of the hardware."
Yes, the unique control interface allows for a higher level of interaction. Hence, the originality.
Unless there is a huge step in a new direction with the Sega version, it is just an attempt to get some of that Nintendog action. And so I stand behind my decree of LAME!
I wanna see super brilliant dogs with innate tendancies for global conquest. Your mission is to play with them, give them treats, walk them, and make sure their little puppy selves are sufficently pampered to the point of complacency so as to tame their imperalistic ways and thus, save the world from doggie domination.
That would be original.

This sounds hypocritical, when nintendo copied Dogz title and slightly modified it, its originality. When sega does it, they're copying the copycat? I guess some people love supporting a multi-billion dollar companies who just want your money.

Spidey #13; I trust, at least to backup what you're saying, that you're using a variation of Linux without a Geforce or Nvideo graphics card or Intel or AMD CPU. Of course you need a little-known Mouse brand, too.

I have no idea what the heck you're talking about.

But this is Sega. What a douche. Viva Pinatas anyone?
Dakara @ Mar 21st 2006 12:36PM
HEY! I know those dogs! I have some of the cell phone charms of them from Japan. They came with some drink I use to buy there. Can't remember the name, but I think it was a tea...mmmm...lychee soda.
Bloo @ Mar 21st 2006 12:36PM
Street Fighter 2 wasn't the first fighting game (heck, it wasn't even the first SF), but it was THE first fighting game and the fighting game all others that have followed it aspired to be. Nintendogs is the same thing.
unreal mccoy @ Mar 21st 2006 12:57PM
Not again! The great Nintendogs vs. Tamagotchi vs. Dogz originality debate returns!
In actuality, pet sims have become a genre. No one debates the oribginality of platformers anymore, so I think we should stop with pet sims.
Scooby Doo @ Mar 21st 2006 1:04PM
For all the talk that this is a 'pro-Nintendo' site, there sure are plenty of posts from haters who want to bash Nintendo. This game is just s-a-d, especially coming from such a veteran of the industry. Shame on you Sega.
I think a number of us are disappointed in Sega because there's a distinct difference in WHY Nintendogs was created versus why this game is. Nintendo saw an untapped market and developed a truly revolutionary game utilizing the Touch Screen and the Microphone to give an experience like truly owning a puppy. The originality stems from the way you interface with your puppy. It just feels like Sega is doing what we all complain about; jumping on the bandwagon of a hot game/genre and hoping to squeeze out a few extra bucks.
Just wanted to tell Spidey: Loved your post, and actually thought Polly's response was even better.
Here's a hint Polly:
If you have no PC, no console, and no handheld gaming device, how much money would it cost the consumer to play Nintendogs versus Dogz?
Scooby Doo @ Mar 21st 2006 1:09PM
Sorry about confusing the names on my prior post.
Spidey = Jay
and Polly = Spidey
I guess my eyes were playing tricks on me when I was trying to read who posted what.

The pups in the game are not Pupporri (or whatever) but they're the massively popular Ochaken... Even the site that's being linked doesn't know about Ochaken... But it is madly popular.

Geez there's some strange people on this site, someone calling me "Polly". I have no idea what you're talking about, and I dont know how its got to what I said.

#20, I totally agree. you don't hear people complaining that world of warcraft is lame because of its similarity to ultima online or everquest. games are games. if you don't like it, don't buy it.
idioteraser @ Mar 21st 2006 2:31PM
The game is based on a comedy series whose name translates to "Tea Dogs". The series is comprised of 26 episodes whose length is four minutes each. The dogs ears are in fact tea leaves and they discuss brewing tea in various episodes.
Here is the Japanese website of the game which is for the pc.

Here is a small english website about the series.

I'd rather SEGA made a sequel to its original pet sim Seaman. The DS already has a microphone on it, seems like a perfect fit.
Chad @ Mar 21st 2006 4:28PM
Here's another "orginiality" take - make it where you can dress the dogs up. Little girls love that kind of stuff. You know - a cross between a Barbie video game of high fashion and the Nintendogs / Dogz / Seaman / Tomagochi world of pet simulation....
We'll call it....
(...wait for it...)
Doggie Styles!
