GDC: The PS3 keynote blow by blow

[10:20 am] I'm sitting here at the San Jose Civic Auditorium after bypassing the unwashed masses waiting outside, proudly flashing the press badge. I kid, I kid. But I did get in early. Inside I take a seat up close, bust out this laptop only to learn that there's no WiFi signal and barely an EVDO signal. This is Silicon Valley people! Where's the WiFi?
I'll be sort of live blogging the event, ready to upload as soon as I can get back to civilization across the street. There's a display up on stage of the history of Sony consoles: the PlayStation, PSone, PlayStation 2, PS2 slim, PSP, and--of course--the PlayStation 3.

[10:36] GDC director Jamil Moledina takes the stage. Says Phil Harrison is going to "deliver the goods." The "ultimate Sony insider." Phil takes the stage. Beyond the box: hardware/software/audience.
[10:39] Report card on PS2 following 2000's GDC PS2 keynote. Business slides: numbers, bar charts, graphs. PSone and PStwo are still dominant platforms. PS2 will provide tremendous commercial opportunity.

[10:41] Exclusive look at PS2 title that will continue to push the PS2. Introduces God of War's David Jaffe. GoW2 on PS2. Why did they decide to do it? PS3 has limitations. Incapable of rendering 3 way sex scenes in real time. (haha). We'll get our hands on it @ E3. (oooh). Shows clip of game. I get my wrist slapped for taking pix. Kratos is BADASS! He's chopping limbs off like crazy!

[10:44] Phil is back! PSP is the fastest growing format ever. Faster than PS1 and PS2. New lower price for PSP dev tools. $5000 (from what?). He goes over what Kutaragi said last week in Tokyo. RSS channel, Macromedia Flash browser, in the next update. Video camera this October. WiFi videophone. Gameplay opportunities. GPS receiver; geocaching, popular, albeit underground. Sept 06. Download and run software directly to MS. UMD's will continue, but digital distribution will be available. Content server (for new games?) and archive server (for PSone games). PS3 connected "seamlessly" with the PSP through the internet.

[10:48] LocoRoco for PSP shown off. No pix again. It's weird! It looks very Katamari. Looks really colorful and creative. It will come out this Summer.
[10:50] Onto the PS3! "An Apology" for the LOD (lots of ducks) joke. For revenge, Sony dumped 1000 rubber ducks on him... hahaha. People yell for side screens, Phil explains they can't since the main screen is in 1080p. We see a procedurally generated video of fish swimming in the water. An "example" of what the PS3 will be capable of doing.

-Full PS2 backcompat
-Full BD support
-Legacy SD to FUll HD support
-Latest HDMI
-Broadband net connection
-Wireless connections
-HDD
PS3 production capacity will ramp up faster than PS/PS2. 1m units/month.
[10:55] Middleware: Epic Unreal Engine, PhysX, HAVOK, all optimized for PS3. SN Systems ProDG Debugger, Tuner, Compiler, etc. Final technology delivered to developers by E3.
Introduces SCEE and HAVOK demo. Ragdoll physics demo. Game production code. 1000 fully skinned ragdoll characters. Blows them up for fun! Game design opportunities, everyone laughs.
[10:58] Another demo of vehicle dynamics, SCEE London. Fancy car. Shiny. Procedurally being destroyed, bullet holes. From a forthcoming game, so they stripped out all the identifying marks. Cars and guns? Full Auto?
[11:00] Blu-ray is vital to the video game industry, not just the movie industry. 100:1 ratio of disc space to system memory. (Xbox 360 is at the bottom of this chart). Shows an E3 demo, proves its running in realtime. Moves the camera around. London street, Picadilly circus. In order to maintain this kind of richness, they "absolutely need" Blu-ray disc.
[11:03] A technical demonstration that looks like a game. Introduces Dylan Jobe (Warhawk). Ambient warfare: combat simulation that's being constantly evaluated in the background. HD behavioral simulation. Significant portion of the system resources are used for the simulation; ocean is procedurally generated; lots of tech-jargon that's supposed to mean it's got some power. Lots of "maps" and "point lights." All of it is in HD, 4x antialiasing. PS3 is complex and powerful, but the developer entry point is accessible. No need for low level optimizations. The demo @e3
[11:08] PlayStation Network Platform is an internal name, not the consumer name (phew!). Service starts with PS3 launch, basic service is free, "open internet" business philosophy. Worldwide network, being built in collaboration with SOE. SCE will provide allthe basic services as standard. Infrastructure investment and operations managed by SCE.
-3rd party game servers can be integrated.
-account created though user registration (single log-on)
-lobby/matchmaking
-score/rakning
-voice video chat
-"Shops" to sell online content.
-Download to PS3 HDD
-Game application launch from HDD (no disc required)
-Flexible business models
-Subs, pay to download, micropayments
The SDK will be delivered to devs. next week with the second release in April and the final production environment available in September.
[11:10] Images from Formula one game. More @ E3. Video chat overlayed over the game from the side. Multiple video chats open at once. Presence is overlaid inside the game. All come from inside the operating system. Email/friends lists all accessible inside the game. Messages can be controlled (intrusive or not). "Shop" front end bought inside the game. Motor Storm "Shop" front end matches the graphical style of that product. "Seamless"
[11:12] Motor Storm, "groundbreaking" PS3 demo from Evolution Studios. HDR lighting, some mapping, ambient inclusion, motion blur, more pixel pr0n. Persistent deformation (trails). Vehicle behaves to tracks left in the newly deformed ground. Motorcycle behaves to the mud, the wheels dig in, leave a trail, kick up dirt. Sprays dirt onto a bus, which then dries. "See you at E3" is written in the dirt.
[11:16] Insomniac Games Ted Price takes the stage. Internal demo completed a few months ago for a game formerly known as i8, now resistance: Fall of Man. FPS. Primarily running on the GPU, but starting to be moved over to the SPUs. Every system they move over, they can do more per frame. Blackhole gun is pretty cool. Still can't take pictures! They're working on the PS3. Insomniac is independent. PS3 has superior firepower. Blu-ray and the SPUs. Everything in the next-gen is more spatially expensive; developers need more room. Blu-ray is a "huge win for developers." Worldwide disc with all the languages present.
Cell has 7 SPUs. Physics, collation, bot navigation, AI, can all be moved onto the SPUs. The challenge comes in load-balancing. Parallel processing on a level that we've never seen before combined with a storage medium that satisifes the insatiable demand for more storage.
Noninteractive demo of a future game. Future/cartoon/aztec look to it. Hovercars and what have you. Lots of stuff going on. Camera flies around a city, with many layers of hover traffic (think Fifth Element). A blimp at the end clearly says, "Ratchet and Clank." A new Ratchet and Clank game perhaps?
[11:25] "We make content on discs to sell in stores." Creating and erving a network of game communities. Fundamental shift from disc based to net based business.
Revenue streams will become much more complex. Introduction of PS3 Network Platform will integrate revenue streams. Episodic content will become a reality. Games will have the same "social currency" as TV like Lost and 24. In-game advertising can be a vital revenue stream. Socom3 on PS2 has 39 million hours of clocked online game time. Homogenous audience that advertisers can identify and sell their product to. He takes care to assure gamers they aren't looking to cover Socom with ads.
PC industry is thriving on subscriptions. Mentions WoW and the popularity. Mobile gaming and "Game Object auctions." (makes a joke about skipping over it since its tricky). Merchandising done sensitively can generate a great deal of money. Direct connection between consumer and game creators.
Some of the next generation of content will be distributed only online! Playstation.com/beyond is live now! Developers and content creators can contact Sony to develop content for the service. Product to service evolution: packaged games augmented by downloaded content enhanced by community experience, enabled by communication features like voice chat and video chat.
[11:31] Innovation through peripherals Singstar, EyeToy and Buzz. Wants to focus on Singstar, a "phenomenon" in Europe. Ultra-localized content (ie Croatian) helps them address new users. Video of Singstar customization. Themes available for download, songs to download. Tons of Sony artists/karaoke. I see an @playstation.net address as user ID. Photos/media available.
Interface is really slick (is this the game or the OS?)
[11:34] He wraps up, that's it folks! Now to get this online!

The line... eeeek!

The auditorium with folks taking their seats.

we need a video!
Yeti @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:05PM
Dammit, I was hoping they would show real time gameplay (someone controlling a character on screen) vs real time rendering (rendering a scene without worrying about physics, AI, controls, etc). Does anyone know if Sony has a demo booth to play games at GDC?
David @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:05PM
I had sent it in to newtips but Sony also said at the even earlier that PS3's worldwide launch would include Austrailia, rejoice!

David @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:07PM
IGN reported that all the demos they showed were done in realtime (?)
Rog27 @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:10PM
Chris, does this mean no media (movies, pics) will come from GDC? Will we have to wait until Sony officially releases this media to get a glimpse? Or did people manage to some footage recorded?
Saccharin @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:11PM
A whole lotta 'see you at E3', I have to say. Sony seem to need to work on their presentation skills. Powerpoints with 12-point Arial doesn't seem to quite do it for me. They've obviously changed a bit since last year, and it seems the design isn't done yet if he's using a Ps2 controller. Still, they've never been shy about changing systems after launch. Remember the age before analog sticks?
I mean the ones they ripped off.

OMG so incredibly boring!!
"Oh look, the PS3 is shiny and has shiny graphics! It supports your SD Sony TV and your HDTV Sony TV, and now you can watch movies with Blue Ray, by Sony! Play Sony games and a sequel to God of War by Sony!"
Come on! Who cares about tech specs, next gen DVDs, etc, they are supposed to show how these games will actually be more fun on the PS3.
Oh look, another EyeToy. Wow, that's already on PS2.
Nintendo's keynotes are always like "hey look, you can move through 3D space, and you can download these games, and these are the types of games you can play, games games games GAMES!"
I will NOT buy a PS3 to play some stupid blu-ray DVDs and sell my soul to DRM and to play GTA 6000.
Jago @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:21PM
"IGN reported that all the demos they showed were done in realtime"
That is indeed true but get ready for Xbox fanboys to start bashing that statement. 3...2...1...
As for the whole controller issue, the controller that some SDKs have come with are just modified Dual Shock 2 controllers using a USB cable.
I don't see a problem in waiting to show everything till May...I mean that is only a month and half away and it will make people come to their booth first (or second since they are right next to Nintendo...I'll be at Nintendo's first.)
Oh and it's obvious Chris that you are either typing on fly as he is speaking or were rushing to finish it before going elsewhere. hehe
Josh @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:23PM
Wow, this was supposed to be good? What a total letdown. I'm actually a Nintendo fanboy, and I was even exited to get online to read about the Sony keynote today, but really...This sucked. There was nothing new at all.
I really hope there's something new for tomorrow from Iwata so GDC 2006 isn't a total letdown for me, as a consumer!
Thomas Crymes @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:24PM
The demos were real time.
While a demo does show what the hardware can do, it shows what the hardware can do when that's ALL the hardware is doing. Add in game logic such as AI, collision detection and such, and all of a sudden that demo might not be 100% possible. But then again, all the developers there know that.
Hopefully E3 will have some actual games to play.
Vader582 @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:24PM
HAHA! Good one Saccharin! The gall Sony has at stealing a technology and once they are found guilty of stealing said technology refuse to pay retributions...Sony's business ethnic (if they exist) seem to be all off...now I realize that some of you Sony fanbois will say, "But Vader582, MS did they same thing! So :p!" Ah this is true my young fanboi...but MS did the smart thing and settled out of court...like Sony should and probably wished they had now...muhahahahahahahahahahaha!
Jago @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:24PM
@ Alex. K:
You obviosuly have no clue what usually goes on at GDC. It is not about flashing lights, playable games, graphics, etc.
GDC is about the TECHNICAL side of the business and where developers also go to learn about current/upcoming technology.
If you want flashy presentations, large crowds, etc. then expect that at E3.
SuicideNinja @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:28PM
Sounds good so far.
Only a couple of concerns:
*I just hope they aren't abusing the term "real time" like usual. See the first comment for a potential example.
*Althought blatantly pushing Bluray, towards the end, they are also pushing downloadable content. Even the loading games from the HDD (which probably just means XBLA type games) makes it sound as though the hard drive is more important than the Bluray.
Other than that, I can't wait for info from E3. Hopefully they should have playable kiosks, so there is finally some real feedback about the PS3. Revolution info would be sweet as well.
don_sf @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:35PM
yes as a matter of fact sony did copy alot of things from other companies.
look at the anologe sticks as an example. please let me also remind you that with ps1 and ps2, they sold more than all the nintendo consoles that ever existed put together.
they know how to do it good.
lol all this time xbox fans were saying that is not real time, but i dont know what there gonna say now.
ps3 is a sexy looking machine, theres no way you can say that it dont look better than the 360.
its got wifi built in so you can use it along with your wireles network without buying extra stuff. i can go on for longer but ps3 is better than the 360 full stop.
lol hd-dvd add on man thats funny
AAA @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:36PM
Regarding PlayStation Network:
"The service starts with the launch of PS3 and is free of charge. It will be built out with an open internet business philosophy.
...
Sony will provide all the basic services as standard, but third parties can add to that.
Basic starts with account creation. It will include lobby, matchmaking, scoring, ranking, video, voice chat, presence and avatars."
Yep, free matchmaking and lobbies with a single login.
All I needed to hear!
bandit @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:47PM
NADA there are more MEDIA reporters than ACTUAL GAME DEVELOPERS at GDC. Yeah the irony. So they really arent catering to the developers, but the media that they KNOW is present. Not to mention the 75% of game developers who actually do zero coding for the system hardware, but rather create assests and other vital game elements which have zero to do with taking hardware limitations into account.
anyway the REAL work and announcements get done at the office. This is just another game media show. If that were the case where are the specfications? The hard numbers? If this is indeed for developers why isnt there even a white paper spec sheet?
Rog27 @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:48PM
You people are not looking very smart here. GDC is for developers, not for the general public. That being said, the internally developed (1st and 2nd parties)technology demos that were presented to them were really to highlight some of the technical capabilities of the machine. Remember, not all developers in attendence are already making games for PS3.
DG @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:51PM
Seems like they're going for convergence big time, especially considering it's worked so well for the PSP.
Oh well.
bobeotm @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:52PM
Obviously some of you dont get what GDC is about. It the business and technical side of the gaming industry, not the consumer side. E3 is the consumer side. When they want to get US excited as games, they use E3, with its flashy presentations and expensive booths. GDC is about tech demos, development tools, infastructure details.
Louis C @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:53PM
Nintendo- Nifty new controller.
Sony- Better graphics, great plans for online play.
Both- Great games planned.
We= all win, (except fanboys of course)
chickensnack @ Mar 22nd 2006 3:56PM
Just to add this, on the Insomniac game non-interactive demo, it was hard to make out, but it said 'Ratchet & Clank' on the side of the blimp that flies by the camera at the end.
Fenris @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:01PM
I can't wait to see some of this stuff in motion. I have no problem with companies having great graphics and gameplay. As noted so many times before, gameplay is the key.
So many people on both sides of the fence (both MS and Sony) seem to think that the next gen will be nothing but great games and visuals. I think that we all should have figured out by now a polished turd is still a turd and many games out there are turds. There will always be crappy games out there, we as gamers should be able to compliment the "other" guys games if they are good games.
I am 360 guy but I have no problem giving props when they are due. At this point we need to see the gameplay. E3 should have some great stuff for all of us.
jaemz @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:01PM
Some interesting ideas being thrown around by Sony... thanks Christopher.
Here's hoping you get some one on one time with some of the big wigs...
Jose @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:05PM
"nad operations" by SCE? You know, I was considering buying the PS3, but after this report, you can count me out!
PatrickT @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:05PM
The footage was mostly taken from upcoming games - Warhawk, Resistance, Heavenly Sword etc. These weren't graphics-only tech demos, it was footage from the games. Most will be playable at E3, which is only a couple of months away - you think they're still dicking around with tech demos at this stage? Come on.
bandit @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:12PM
most of these tech demos are in direct response to questions of the PS3s ability to do realtime INTERACTIVE physics and procedural synthesis as the SPEs lack both interger performance and branch prediction. The problem is they are not IN-GAME. As such are not truely interactive.
Interactivity brings a whole new equation to the game. I have to see the demos before making a real call as to what is actually being displayed but my guess is more smoke and mirrors from a software perspective.
james @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:14PM
Fanboy's aren't gamers.
Every generation so far i've had a different manufature be my favorite. First it was NES > Genesis > Playstation > Xbox > ??? No idea what it's going to be this time around, it's too early. So far i am totatly loving the 360, but have yet to see what the competition can do. I'm kinda leaning towards the revolution. I would love for nintendo to make a comeback and pawn all.
iapetus @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:16PM
"Remember the age before analog sticks?
I mean the ones they ripped off."
Ripped of from Atari, who made the first consoles with analog sticks?
No?
You must mean they ripped them off from Vectrex, then, with the first analog controllers that could be held like a modern controller.
No?
I'm drawing a blank here...
Buckshot @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:18PM
Yawn. Yet more specs and vaporware. Let's hope they have actual boxes at e3. I just want to see an actual product and actual game on it.
Jago @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:21PM
Like I just said, GDC is for developers and publishers to LEARN new and upcoming techniques, technologies and software/hardware.
There are workshops and conferences going on ALL OVER the place at GDC (same with E3)...so to say that GDC is just for the press is down right incorrect.
"there are more MEDIA reporters than ACTUAL GAME DEVELOPERS at GDC"
Maybe...maybe not...but since just about everyone can open a website or a blog and call themselves a legit news source a lot of those people don't have any real credibility. Plus just b/c every publisher/developer doesn't have some kind of booth on the floor doesn't mean there are less develeopers there. Some of them (more publishers and middleware developers) have meeting rooms instead so they can speak to other "potential" clients and discuss other information.
Like Rog27 said:
"GDC is for developers, not for the general public"
TiaMaster @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:24PM
AAA I think you need to read and actually COMPREHEND...
You can say the EXACT same statement about the 360's online presence.
Trying to say that Sony won't charge for their online gaming service - RE: their "premium" service - is ludicrous to the extreme.
-----------------
And it really sucks that this was supposed to be the big insider unveiling, yet there was actually no real news for anybody that has been following this from the get-go.
Everything that they did here was also done by M$ before they launched, and in about the same time frame, if not a little earlier. Meaning that $ony better get their asses moving when it comes to getting production up to snuff, final dev kits shipped, and this "LIVE killer" in some sort of working condition.
LunarDuality @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:27PM
You know, SOCOM is huge for Sony. "Socom3 on PS2 39 million hours of clocked game time." That's a lot of time. That is until you compare it to THIS:
To date, the Halo franchise has sold more than 14.5 million games worldwide with over 600 million hours of multiplayer action logged across Microsofts Xbox Live online gaming service.
And this for a "pay-to-play" service.
I'm extraordinarily interested to see what Sony is going to present at Launch of the PS3 for their Network Platform. I hope that it really challenges Live to get better. It doesn't really serve the community if it's just a bare-bones but free service IMO. Now, it's really a wait a see situation... no "real news" at this event so far.
B @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:36PM
I'll keep waiting for E3.
Andy @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:36PM
Yawn. Sony needs to stop BSing and show something real or people are just going to lose interest.
Red @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:41PM
Acutally there was some very good info in this and another blog I read. Microsoft likes to spin the fact that Blu-Ray isnt a big deal since everything will be online which may be true for movies sooner than games. But for the foreseeable future, new games will be played mostly from disks and developers are going to be able to make much larger and graphically more capable games since the Blu-Ray disks can hold a lot more data. Blu-Ray is important not just for movies, but the games too. I didnt really think about that aspect until it was mentioned at the keynote. Also the talk about using the SPUs to process certain calculations and how the developers are doing well at utilizing them is very exciting news. Like fellow commentors this was a developers conference not E3. The point wasnt to show off games but to show off development tools. I actually got very stoked off the info presented and how far along developers are.
Ross Miller @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:44PM
I love the keynote, but gotta say...what's up with 2:25?
Really good job, Chris, wish I could be there (stupid f-king...you know...responsibilities and academia and all that crap).
JaSoN! @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:44PM
what more do Sony have to say? they have the next generation wrapped up. after they announced the delay 'playstation 3' was highlighted in the dozen or so keywords in the 'in the news today' section of google news home. the brainless consumer who swallows EAs ads and keeps games like fifa street in first place in the charts all hear the ps3 is 'wicked', what else do they need to know? nothing. an impression of greatness is enough. however true or false it maybe. these are the people who determine console popularity and theyve been born, bred and fed sony. if tomorrow morning nintendo announced that the revolution is actually ten times as powerful as the PS3 nobody from this market segment would bat an eyelid.
the solution?
nintendo must give away a free PS3 with every Revolution they sell!
Scott @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:55PM
I give up...was Sony there to show off the PS3 or Blu-Ray? All I heard was Blu-Ray Blu-Ray Blu-Ray
Evil Inside @ Mar 22nd 2006 4:57PM
I agree with a lot of the above comments.
Sony really needs to start showing some playable demos for the press and community. I'm really getting sick of the so-called "real time" tech demos. If the system launches in November, shouldn't the hype machine be firing up soon? Where are the trailers from the developers? Is Sony forcing them to keep thier games secret until E3?
Speaking of which, E3 should be fairly interesting this year, and I fully expect Sony to have a big presence there with lots and lots of playable demos and kiosks. I'll be very suprised if they don't.
The next gen systems are going to be real powerhouse machines that will be battling for our hard earned cash.
It's a great time to be a gamer.
funkonaut @ Mar 22nd 2006 5:00PM
Two things:
1. Tomorrow is Nintendo's keynote!
2. I'm cool with Sony being secretive about the PS3. They still have oodles and oodles of money to make off of the PS2. The more they hype the PS3, the more they hurt the PS2.
Patience, kiddies. You act like you don't have enough games to play or something...

Really screw halo. It has so many hours because of a structured online environment. That's it. Once Sony gets the online gaming down, we'll see whos systems games will have the larger audience. (Maybe the one with the large fan base?)

How many has Nintendo shown?

I am still excited for the PS3 and just happy to know the release date. It would have been nice to see one game clip.
Dave @ Mar 22nd 2006 5:22PM
Why do people think that having a larger storage capacity on the disk is going to make the games look better? Please, please somebody explain this to me. It sounds like people think that suddenly, the existing RAM doubles because the disk can store more stuff. It's ludicrous.
I don't care how much crap you can throw on the disk, the machine can only work with 512M of stuff at a time. If you have some hellishly large textures, then you're using more RAM and limiting yourself in other areas. Ok, so maybe you don't compress textures as much as the guy with the smaller disk. But to the end user, that will make an entirely unnoticable difference.
Blu-Ray means two things - more pre-rendered FMV and more recorded music tracks. If Sony incorporates the ability to play your own music during gameplay, like the 360, then the latter won't matter or even be leveraged. So blu-ray, then, means more pre-rendered FMV.
