First paragraph of IGN's Article

March 22, 2006 - In its platform keynote address at GDC 2006 this morning, Sony Computer Entertainment displayed for the first time the new multi-vehicle dirt racing game, Motorstorm.

Compared to the E3 presentation, the game is close in presentation and functionality and look to its promise, with detail not reaching the level of the astounding E3 demo but still running with some very cool technology to provide a new way of playing in the mud.

*Dissapointing I'd say. Expect more scaled down graphics when you can actually play it.

"Blu-Ray means two things - more pre-rendered FMV and more recorded music tracks. If Sony incorporates the ability to play your own music during gameplay, like the 360, then the latter won't matter or even be leveraged. So blu-ray, then, means more pre-rendered FMV.- Dave "

How shortsighted is that?? More storage space means much more than that! How about huge levels ingame? Long epic games demand much more space than you can shake your finger at. High res textures enough for an entire MMORPG world.Gameplay hours that reach into the triple digits.

I rest my case.

Look - I know this is the Internet - and I know this is "just a blog" and I know it takes a whole 30 seconds to run spell check - but somebody PAID you to write this for them. IT'S SPELLED THE NOT TEH.

Some of us aren't impressed with the ability to misspell. I don't think it makes you any more 733t to not know how to type.

And before someone comes on and says "He was in a hurry to get the content up as soon as possible." Okay - this post was put up over 3 hours ago. Someone could have edited it by now.

The PS3 will have great graphics at the expense of fun and short load times.

For the guys who still can't comprehend that playing online will be free, note that Phil Harrison re-iterated it again in the followup talk. (Link below).
This goes out to people like TiaMaster who just said:

===
Trying to say that Sony won't charge for their online gaming service - RE: their "premium" service - is ludicrous to the extreme.
===

The quote from Kotaku's chat with Harrison:

"
The basic service for Playstation Live will be free, Harrison reiterated, with only third-party and micro transactions costing anything. In other words, you will be able to play online for free and, at least it sounds like, there will be no tiered system like what is found with Xbox Live.

what a bunch of idiotic(insert random number here) fanboys.
the news doesn't excite you? sounds boring? no playable demo??
MAYBE BECAUSE IT IS GDC, NOT E3????

what, do you expect them to let their competitors play their early version of the game, presented by naked booth babes, so they can steal the ideas??
good one.....

Im def taking this whole keynote with a grain of salt, after all it is Sony. Wait till E3 and lets see how the games really look when they are playable. Its gonna take alot to convince me to put a Foreman grill next to my 360.

As for BluRay, its funny how Sonys hyping this media format up when I bet none of their games will exceed the space of a regular dual layer dvd. To each his own, Sony has stupid fanboys and theyll still suck it up.

Or, Leo, maybe everything they've been saying recently has been dull?

When they announced the PS3 I though, "ah, good". When the Rev was announced with its control method the PS3 became my future '2nd console'. Ever since the Rev all the news from Sony's side has been pure boring "oh, it goes this fast... it can push this many polygons". I didn't know before the DS and the Rev announcements that gaming was boring. I just put it down to growing up and getting tired of current gen. Until I got into my DS.

I want Sony to have something brand new and fresh. Something to get me excited about. I don't want another current gen, or not fully. hence the 2nd console position. I want Sony to come out with some new EyeTV that puts YOU in a game, or whatever. As a guy who doesn't bother with specs on his computer (so long as it runs Final Cut Pro at wonderful speeds) these figures and videos aren't doing anything.
I just think Sony as a whole have stopped exciting me for a while now. Laptops, consoles, music players. Just feel subpar and unvaried.

Disclaimer: I will still buy a PS3. No doubt there. but not in the early days, though.

To all you haters out there:
C'mon..... C'mmmoonnnnnnn.....
You KNOW you love it.....

I realize the news about PS3 has been trickling out slower than molasses, but it is an amazing piece of hardware. No doubt E3 will have hands-on demos, and if not, hey: there's always the Tokyo Game Show.

Anyways, this fan won't die... I'm getting myself a PS3 as soon as it hits stores. "Revolution" too. But that's another story.

#63,
While it's true that most of the early title will be played like current generation games (just look at 360 games.... current gen games+ sweat drops), however the most important factor is that these consoles have much more raw powers. it's up to the developers, not sony or microsoft, to use those extra powers to create something that is impossible to create at previous generation consoles. which is why, this kind of technical demo is important, so that the developers realize what possibilities can be done with the PS3.
by using PS1 power, developers had created 3d platforming games, the kind of genre you would never think of at SNES era. by using PS2 and dreamcast power, developers had created a free roaming world ala GTA or shenmue. These is now a standard feature for most games. these feature, again, is unthinkable @ ps1, even N64 era.

my point is, developers will find a way to use the system extra power to create a new gaming concept.
yes, revolution offer refreshing ideas. However nintendo is gambling here, are people ready for these???
Personally I wish revolution will be a hit, but remember, there are a lot of tech items that failed misserably because they are too ahead of its time.

i love how jonas reveals his fanboydom when he says "sony is better" and "jus admit it 360 fanboys you got riped"
WHATS THAT?
jonas just followed the laws of a fanboy, a lone matter of opinion statement with no evidence to back it up that supports one console and damms another

Vader582:

Sony got sued over analog sticks? You have no clue what you're talking about.

Immersion vs. Sony and Immersion vs. Microsoft were lawsuits over haptic systems AKA force feedback. Immersion sued both companies with a patent they were issued for a full body haptic suit. Due to quirks in US Patent law, Immersion is claiming that anything containing two or more independant motors is covered by their patent.

Microsoft chose to settle out of court.

Sony, thinking that there's no way that a court could possibly rule in Immersion's favor, decided to go through the entire suit... and lost.

For reference, Gamecube controllers only have one motor, which is why Immersion never went after Nintendo.

I might be wrong, but isn't a "100:1 ratio of disc space to system memory" REALLY bad? Because a disc is so much slower than system memory, I always thought that you wanted to get as much into RAM as possible. So therefore 100:1 must be really bad. Or am I totally wrong here?

Ok for all you guys who think its amazing to have so much in one box i.e. wireless built in. Do you not realise how much more this console is going to cost you all for those features. Second i do not believe those game demos are realtime and even if they are. Why do they not look anything like the pre rendered bullshit we were fed with at E3 last year. Back in the old days when Sega produced the dreamcase that could produce graphics advanced on the ps2 (it was out 2 years before) and people just believed the sony hype. Just you wait i bet the games look nothing like the fake demos of last e3. I am not fanboy and yes i own an xbox 360 but i find MS have been far more open with their consoles ability and now show it with the games on the shelves. One thing i hate sony for their technical document/excel graph lies! Beware!

Those who are arguing in Sony's favor because GDC is a developers' conference are really missing the point. The demos shown, at least according to the write-up, don't sound any more impressive than the demos shown almost a full year ago at E3 '05. Sony needs to be trying to win developers over to its side by going all out and showing what their brightest minds can put together to push the limits of the system.

Why not have that motocross demo be playable? Without playability, it's just an FMV. Even the PS1 could output nice FMV (limited, obviously, by the media size). For all we know, they took a rendering program and created a movie to play back.

If Sony were trying to impress developers, they should have been giving them a run-through of the SDK. The most common complaint I've heard about the PS3 is that its development tools are very difficult to use. Developers may be excited about the power, but they're also reluctant because of the difficulty factor. Sony needs to be showing their potential third-party developers that the PS3 is WORTH developing for. That the rewards outweigh the inconvenience.

Me? I'll be waiting until the system price drops considerably. I'm happily playing Oblivion on my 360, and I intend to scoop up a Revolution as soon as it comes out, so I'll have plenty of gaming goodness to tide me over until the PS3 drops its price a couple of times (probably right around the time I get my Civic paid off and can spare $300).

Some people are just not getting that this is a DEVELOPERS CONFERENCE! It's full of workshops, relatively boring academic lectures, forums, Tech demos, middleware presentations, etc. E3 is the place for the really big announcements because the media has a greater presence and the consumer public is more likely to hear of whats going on. The only reason Sony had that business briefing last week is because people like some of you, are hard at work spreading unfounded negative speculation.
There were some relatively nice things to come out of Sony's keynote (and the later question and answer session harrison did). One is that you will actually be able to play online games using the free service, unlike the crippled xbox silver accounts. People are excited about nintendo without having seen any gameplay whatsoever, and they dont seem to mind!!!! Sony has shown more about the PS3 than Nintendo did about the Revolution, yet people are all up sony's ass scolding them for not saying anything. It's like this on every single message board and comment thread in the gaming community, and its really hypocritical.

"relatively boring academic lectures"

Hmmm...I dunno if I'd call them "boring" b/c like you said they are intended for developers who will find most of them interesting (depending on the lecture and how long they've been in the industry.) Developers of the various software used in the industry (3dsmax, Maya, SoftImage) will hold training classes if a new version is coming out to show off the new features.

Yeah i think the 360 fans are just made cuz PS2 SMASHED xbox and PS3 will prolly smash the 360, even being a year late. But we should be thanking xbox because without competition playstation would'nt be as good as it is today. So thank you Xbox, for makeing playstation better, and for the person that said halo has 600m hours played with 14.5m games sold. That means people only played that game for like 41 hours. I've never played socom but i play battlefield2 along with 3 friends and we all have over 100 hours played. I have about 180 but there are some people in that game that have over 2 and even 300 hours played in like 6 months. Ok now say that 1m copies of that game were sold and the average player has over 100 hours. Thats 100m hours in 6 months. Considering Halo launched on 11/14/01, and you did say "Halo franchise" not halo 2, they have been out for 5 years. In that time battlefield2 will have racked up 1billion hours of game play on ps2.
