I love when people say twilight princess is the only reason to keep a system for. You mean to tell me that there are no games on the system that you want to play? I'm sorry but with all systems, there are always plenty of games that look great that i haven't gotten the chance to buy so I don't see how you can see one game as the reason to keep a system. At the very least, I would expect you to still get joy out of titles you've bought prior.

Oh wait, that's right, you probably just feel like hating on a select system.

As for oblivion, I've heard mixed things. The facial animations are supposed to be awful and the dialogue as well. Cities are still lifeless.

However, it sounds like some areas have been very much improved. Combat received an outstanding overhaul and quests are supposed to be significantly better. And as many people seem to live on, the graphics look very impressive.

Me, I'm stuck with my school laptop so I'll stick with civilization 4 and rome total war :). One day though... one day.

Now take those three things and look at them in every other RPG that has been released and that will be released.

Well, I found a bug last night, a common one, that prevents you from finishing a thieving quest, which was a real downer.

On top of that, the item system is horribly boring (like, really boring as hell,) lots of magic seems pointless, poison vials seem pointless, and the scaling is off so badly that the game can easily be won if you never level up, but gets much harder the higher you level, giving you no real reason to bother leveling your character. As a level 16 you get your ass kicked. As a level 1 you do serious damage.

Despite all that, I love this game. And I'm not even a real RPG fan.

you heard wrong. very wrong. just play the game and stop spread opinions that "you heard", instead of relevant first-hand observations.

this game isnt perfect, no game is, but its pretty damn close to it. a true masterpiece.

Well, as can be seen just by looking at every other person on the planet's opinion compared to his, MosquitoControl has absolutely no idea what in the crap he's talking about. Although I'm sure he's a nice enough guy. :

And as for Student's appraisal - his "I've heard mixed things" - I don't see where he posted any sort of link to where those 'mixed things' seem to be located...

Tia, I didn't know you were interested in direct sources as I assumed we were commenting on casual things we've heard. However, if you insist, you can tell where I've heard the good things simply by reading what is posted by every single big name review site above.

For the poor qualities, http://www.rpgcodex.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?p=212029&sid=443043f29a5735b9f1ca20323860cb9b#212029

If you scroll down to the post by Saint_Proverbius, one of the big wigs at RPG codex you can see his negative comments as well as here: http://www.nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=18193

Sheesh, there you are...

I can't believe how much nitpicking of this game goes on in the official forums. If you want to find fault in a game this large, you certainly can.

But if you want to just sit down and have fun, Bethesda obliges you quite well. Probably the best accomplishment in this game is how well it adapts to your playstyle. Whether you like to play fast or slow, swords or magic, it sucks you in and gives you a really compelling entertainment experience.

Remember how excited we were about Ultima IX: Ascension, and how awful it felt when Lord Richard shipped us a pile of dog feces in a box? Oblivion gives us the experience we would have had if Ultima IX had been done well.

This game is great, but it's not as fantastic as some people make it out to be. My criticisms of the Xbox 360 verison include:

-a number of bugs (especially quest related ones with certain Guilds, which can really break the game)
-frequent slowdowns/low FPS, in towns in particular
-annoying loading times and suttering despite of a clean harddrive (especially when you travel on horseback)
-inept NPCs that occasionally have completely idiotic conversations (I've also seen two different pairs of NPCs have the exact same conversation one after the other)
-there are not enough voice actors for a game this size and with so many diverse characters; the voice acting in general isn't that great once you get over the "it's Patrick Stewart!!11" factor

The low FPS in particular really bugs me. I usually don't mind low FPS in certain games - i.e. Shadow of the Colossos, but because the way combat works here and the games heavy reliance on the 1st-person perspective, the slowdowns become really annoying.

Bob42- I've experienced no slowdowns or stuttering on my 360. My load times are usually no more than a couple seconds, max- Even when going from inside a city to the outside world.

I have hit a bug in which I got caught inside a boulder, but that's acceptable considering the size of this game. I reloaded. No big deal.

Copa- Exactly. This is what Ultima would be if it were still going strong. Any fan of the Ultima series would do well to grab Oblivion. This is western-style role playing at its best. Ultima IX had such promise, and turned out to be the buggiest, most poorly-coded game I've ever played. This game washes away the bad memories of trying to play through Ultima IX, and gives me fond memories of Ultima IV, VII (1 & 2), and VIII.

Always so move love on this website......

When I read "student"'s comments, I knew exactly what he was talking about. The first facial animation I encountered in the game was awful: cracks in the texture maps, unsync'd voices, etc. But it's very inconsistent. Some facial animations are amazing, some are painful to look at.

Imperial City is a huge letdown after the initial jawdrop of that first vista when you walk out of the first dungeon. It just looks like one big repeatative cut-n-paste operation. The other cities seem to have a bit more character.

My biggest complaint, though, is the interface. The menus are a point and click nightmare. Why can't I see the menu and move at the same time? How can I tell what spell I have equiped? And don't even get me started about group battles. I've already unwantingly injured two NPCs. Thank goodness for Save/Load.

I'd give this game a 90 -- I'm having a good time playing even with the problems. But no way this game is a 100.

I don't normally have the patience to play this style of RPG. I must say that Oblivion has succeeded in pulling me in - in a huge way no less. At first I tried a few side-quests to get some gold, but those adventures so far have proven a bit difficult to complete, and were starting to bore me. So off I went on the main quest, and there in I was drawn in. After going to a priory in a small town to the west, you get a horse, which you have to ride horseback west to a small town. Despite frequent, brief, load times on the trip, it was just amazing how huge the world is.

Yeah, it's easy to "nitpick" when there is so much going on, I am just stunned at the level of detail, content, etc that seemed like an army of hundreds of artists and coders poured over for years. Everything is gorgeous - even the damp sewers and dungeon crawls look good.

I have explored so little of the world so far, and I just look forward to getting around and seeing new places. I would have to agree that Imperial City is my least favorite city so far, but that's because it lacks an organic artistry that other towns have - but by no means is it not beautiful in certain ares. Take a walk in the arboretum area and you'll understand what I mean.

There are such overwhelmings that it's hard to knock on certain things. The level of complexity does lead to frustration. I still can't figure out how to properly do lock-picking, and I don't get how you level up certain spell powers. I opted to abandon the bow and arrow in favor of using ranged spells, but I've been using a fireball attack since I started that just doesn't pack much punch, and I have no idea how I get a more powerful ranged attack yet. A few of the side-quests are going nowhere, simply because I can't break into a house, or a person doesn't trust me enough to give me more information. Fighting is satisfying, but my only big complaint is the lack of feedback as to how much damage you are inflicting on your enemies - an important piece of intel necessary to manage your spells and potions.

I've only been able to play for a little over 10 hours, so I'm not worried too much at some of these early frustrations. I've closed a Gate of Oblivion already, rescued an heir, been to a fortress high in the snowy mountains, began looking for info on a secret cult, and slain two people in the arena. I've been to maybe 4 of the 16 major cities, and I've only spent a lot of time in the Imperial City. This game offers the most cohesive persitant world I have ever seen in a video game, and I look forward to continued enjoyment in the months ahead.

I totally agree with both #17 (JD) as well as #18 (WyattERP). The game truly has a lot of copy & paste, and after the third dungeon which looked exactly the same I only used instant travel and didn't explore any more. Also the interface might be fine for consoles, but it sucks for PC. (or in other words: one is used to better interfaces on PC) I mean why not have the same interface every role-playing game has? You have to search for each item every time you want to use it. And why have hundreds of spells if I can only use 3-4 of them? They could have simply included more than one quickbar. Battles seem to have their problems as soon as you are not fighting melee 1on1 or ranged 1on1. When fighting ranged against melee you quickly run around in circles all the time while shooting, to trick the AI into attacking less. This can't be the purpose of it. When fighting against more than 1 enemy it quickly gets chaotic. When fighting with allies your best hope is to stay out of battle and find isolated enemies, so that you don't hurt your allies.

Yet the game has so much detail and so much love to it. And it simply is so much fun. And the graphics are great. I discovered a girl I know from real life in the game. They look EXACTLY the same. And especially at the beginning you have a lot of "wow" moments. Like the first time I hit a goblin right in the face with an arrow, which made him fly halfway across the room. Or when I became a vampire and was suddenly blinded by all the sunlight around me. (I wish my graphic card was able to handle HDR...)

Overall I would give this game 89/100, but I have just had the game for 2 days, so don't take that serious.

I got this game and so far I'm about 5 hours into it and haven't even left the city yet. I've been spending a whole lot of time stealing from the people in the city and selling it back to others. You know, crap like that. Anyway, so far I really like this game and I know I'm going to have some fun with it. Everybody was right, this game has a LOT and I mean a WHOLE LOT of things to do.

As for the complaints people are making...
- if you want good facial animations then watch a Star Wars movie, it'd cost a shit load of money to get ILM type graphics into a video game
- as for the voice actors, so what? I buy a game to play it, not to see what big names are in it, I mean since when did video games get reviewed like movies?
- I've had NO lagging up on the graphics or freezing
- my load times are NOT bad at all

Now my real complaints are...
- I guess most RPGs have large user/character/information menu but for some reason I don't think the menu isn't the most user friendly and it takes time to get use to
- this is my first Oblivion game so I feel I've been thrown into this thing, the game starts slow but then it gets kicked into overdrive and you feel a little lost, it takes a while to finally know just what is going on
- I'm not a fan of the level up system right now, I want to be able to put my points where I want, I don't want them put under a characteristic for me and I have to rearange them

Other than that I'm enjoying the game. I'm a big fan of the KOTOR games and I feel this one is a nice switch. Sure the story is different but I feel some of the same characterists are there that make if fun.

WyattERP - You DO get feedback on how much damage you're doing to an enemy. Above the target cross is a little curved bar that represents your target's overall health. When you hit them it shrinks. When it shrinks to nothing they're dead.

Using lockpicks is easy, by the way. I suggest you follow the tutorials instead of skipping them, and RTFM that came with the game. I bet you don't even know how to yield to an opponent, do you?

Manuals are pretty nice on a game this big.

Ouch ZeroCorpse...back off a bit my friend. Most games haven't required a reading of a "manual", but I have indeed picked it for this game from the very beginning. It's not that useful in giving strategies or much other than just a quick overview. I don't have the collector's edition, but part of me wishes I did to get a hold of the additional info. I never saw any lock picking tutorial other than when you first got a chance to pick a lock on a chest in the game opening cave crawl (where you pick an easy lock).

I did however notice the subtle semi-circle bar above the reticule when I was playing tonight, and to that I was greatly pleased.

Playing for a few hours tonight led to becoming a brawler in the arena, going on a joy-ride aboard a boat with pirates (of course, I was the unintended guest), finishing the rescue of Kyvath (sp?), joining the fighters guild, and more. To end the night I watched the sunset over the hills looking out from a bridge just outside Imperial City. The day-night cycles are awesome, as well as the weather - with thunderstorms rollin through occasionally, to overcast days, or your normal sunny weather. I'm sure some coder spent a good amount of time on the detail of the sky in the game, and will probably be one of the most overlooked portion of the graphics! - Another subtlety I noticed tonight was leaves changing colors. If there are snow storms and barren trees in the winter - I'm gonna cry (j/k); but this kind of engrossing attention to detail is indeed incredible.

Student, thank you for cementing the fact that you are listening to arbitrary posters on that particular forum.

So I'll set it straight - "Saint_Proverbius" says the "lip synching is totally off".
Dude, just go to your local game store where I'm sure they have it playing. The lip synching is there and spot on thank god, because I'm really a hater on games that don't take time to synch.

Maybe I just don't understand why someone would totally ignore every review by all organizatinos and instead make some sort of catalogue in his mind about the NEGATIVE parts that they said. If this is true, then the only thing you would take away from Yahoo! Games review is the fact that its too hard to stop playing. Now THAT is a great reason not to buy a game.

This game really isn't that good at all.

It's quite small compared to Morrowind, and a lot of the depth seems to be missing this time around. There are quite a few broken quests, as well as glitches that are game stoppers. The graphics are certainly better this time around, but overall, this game is a shadow the greatness that Morrowind was. The creatures and items in the game scale to your current level, so exploring is essentially useless. In Morrowind you could venture into areas that you were too weak to enter and have a chance at finding really good loot. Not so in Oblivion.

This game is just simply "okay". About a 70/100.

For me it comes down to one thing and one thing only...is it fun to play? And for me, Oblivion is a fun game to play. I have not taken it out if the 360 since I put it in on release day (I keep telling myself to make time for GRAW, but another hour ticks by on the clock and GRAW keeps on gathering dust). Is this a "perfect game"? Of course not, but nothing is. Does it live up to the hype? I think it actually comes somewhat close. Very few games in recent memory have come close to the hype that we are all hammered with prior to a game being released. The amount of pre-release hype that game magazines/blogs/etc.. shove down our throats is starting to make me sick. I have given up reading almost all game magazines except 1 that I still get in the mail. Joystiq is one of two blogs that I read daily, the rest seem to be whoring themselves to game publishers, and we the gamers are treated like marks. Every new game "preview" declares the second coming. No wonder when we finally play the game we get dissapointed, because all the promises we heard never materialise ("Fable", anyone?). But for me, Oblivion was worth the wait. I have experienced a few bugs which required me to reload a game save, and the load screens do sometimes seem to take awhile (Bethesda has discussed this issue regarding the 360), but these are minor things. I recommend this to anyone who plays games, and if you have yet to get a 360, Oblivion is a good reason, unless you play the PC version or want to wait for the next FF for the PS3, and that might be a long wait.
