TeamXecuter has posted and update on their progress stemming from the Xbox 360 DVD firmware hack:
We have made some progress when connecting the Xbox360 DVD ROM to a PC - reading the firmware and then writing back to it. Our goal is to make this plug and play - as simple as possible that anyone could do it with no fuss - and without any great expense.
We have a couple of products lined up to make life incredibly simple for the DVD drive modder - one of which will (in our opinion) be the "tool of choice" in the near future.

If a plug and play hack is released, Microsoft will surely follow up with a forced patch via Xbox Live that would have to be re-hacked. Plus there's the risk of Microsoft detecting your jiggered drive and banning you from XBL or bricking your console. It would probably be less hassle (yet still economically sensible) for the piracy-inclined to pick up a second 360 for $300 and focus their criminal efforts on the best single-player experiences, say Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. All the more reason for developers to make XBL an integral part of every game.
Isn't it ironic that piracy has finally given the Xbox 360 Core System a reason to exist?
