An Elder Scrolls retrospective
In celebration of last week's Oblivion launch, UGO is
taking a look back at the previous entries in the Elder Scrolls series. This 12-year retrospective traces the
humble beginnings of Arena to the massive Morrowind, and everything in between (mobile phone games
included).Fortunately for RPG enthusiasts, Bethesda decided to expand the original game's gladiatorial premise in favor of a larger scale adventure. The result has been one of the longest running, and arguably the deepest, role-playing experience in modern gaming.
For a trip down memory lane, you can download Arena at the Elder Scrolls web site.

Hah, so when you go into the Arena in the Imperial City in Oblivion, you see a poster with a *very* similar look as the old Arena software package.
The only difference is that Bethesda toned down the 80s thong barbarian girl. Which, really, is bullshit. I know that when I fight in a gladiator battle, its rarely in anything more than a banana hammock and a smile.

Free game? I love free games!
Oh.
I'm surprised this runs on an XP machine even with the DOS box.

I bought that back in the day (which was a Wednesday incase you didn't know) when it came out. Spent tons of time on it. I wish I still had all my old games. Cool that they're letting you download it.
Thanks Bethesda!

Gladitorial premise? I don't remember any gladiators or any actual arenas. I believe "Arena" refers to the plane of existence where Tamriel exists, because it is a constant battle between good and evil (as opposed to Oblivion or wherever the good guys live). That's what it said in the Pocket Guide to the Empire, anyway.
