I cant believe BOSE did so well. Just proves how little people know about audio. Bose with out the name would be equivilant to products about 1/4 the price. IE they are marginally better than the typical home theatre in a box setups. They're only really good if you want the tiny little cube speakers, and even then there are lots of companies that out preform them for less money. (Take a look at energy's offersing.)

Keep in mind that this is perceived reliability. For example: Dell makes crap computers, and their tech support has sucked since they changed outsourcers and moved to India, but they have good marketing.

"Microsoft faces big consumer defection risk. One measure of consumers' dissatisfaction with Microsoft is seen in the 5.4 million households that give it a brand trust score of 1 [distrust a lot] or 2 [distrust a bit]. Compared with all Microsoft users, these at-risk users have higher income, are much more likely to be male, and are bigger online spenders.(see endnote 7) These households know they run Microsoft software but would be just as happy to leave it behind — if they could."

As I expected and always said, people that explicitly don't like Microsoft products are well informed about how they sell the most expensive paperweights and other crap on markets where you don't have much choice, or where you will eventually have no choice given that they have the money to flood and destroy any market.

"Sony's current customers are affluent, young, and more likely than the general population to stick with a brand they like. Sony's prospects have a different profile: poorer than the general population, less brand loyal, and more likely to buy on price. To reach these 9.8 million households, Sony will have to tailor its marketing messages and retail presence to compete on price."

-How delightful, Sony's users are well informed about what's quality (regardless of the prime), but that's probably why its audience seems to be diminishing, but for that reason they want to catter wider audience. I'm sick and tired of Sony bashing in this site, when Microsoft has made the entire world waste a lot more resources and money than Sony has and ever will.

LOL to the one saying "1 out of each 9 PS2's had a flaw", when more than 2 out of each 3 Xboxes had a flaw, and that's not counting all the faulty disc reading drives (Thompson anyone?), let alone the lack of compelling software. That is of course, unless you are talking about Nintendo... yeah, there's not much reason to distrust Nintendo, as their products have always been flawlessly designed; too bad their 3rd party strategy or their latest console design were crap, otherwise they'd be at the top (or somewhere close). Thinks look brighter with revolution though.

No company is naturally evil, but the least evil (as of now), seems to be Nintendo, and I find it hypocritical of Xbox and Microsoft fans alike to bash Sony. You say its obnoxious when people call 360 "1.5" when you are equally annoying with your bs.

People, please, the #1 spot on that survey isn't occupied by the company named Bose that makes speakers. They're obviously referring to the black dude from Road Rash named Bose. I'm just surprised that Forrester managed to find so many people who have even played Road Rash in the first place.

I must admit, given all the negative press they've been privy to lately, Sony's position on that graph surprised me. For the past few months it's been nothing but rootkits and shitty ad campaigns to sodomize my retinas. Dear God, the last time a PSP commercial came up on my TV I violated no less than eight laws of relativity judging by the speed at which I grasped desperately for the remote. Personally, the only Sony product that I've ever had break on me was a pair of $3 headphones, and I'm willing to chalk that up to my own carelessness. I'm definitely willing to put stock in the theory that greate market saturation can account for all the Playstation horror stories.

I've always been quite impressed with the durability of Nintendo's products, though I can attest that they are by no means indestructible. My grandfather's original NES, which had been perched precariously atop the television, stopped functioning after one too many eager jerks of the controller brought it crashing down. If it's any consolation, he replaced it with one of them newfangled redesigned NESs, which continues to work to this day.

As for Microsoft, the biggest problems I've ever had with Windows have all been hardware related (which is odd, given Dell's placement on the graph). I agree that people tend to blame their operating system whenever anything goes wrong, which is why Windows gets such a bad rap. OMG WINDOZE U TOTALY JST FRIDE MY MOTHERBORED!!¡ If you really don't like it, then go buy a Linux box and learn how to use a command prompt. Better yet, write your own operating system. How hard could it be?

That said, I'd switch over to MacOSX in an instant if it natively supported my ancient copy of Road Rash. :)

I'm suprised Sony's trust level is ranked so high, especially after their DRM incident. I trust them about as far as I can throw them(and by them I mean their corporate office building). It makes me a little skeptical of the data.

It's a real pity that people think Sony is so bad... I've never had any problems with their products, and I LOVE their Vaio Wide warranty plan- covers things that NO OTHER company covers, like drops, spills, and fire (Don't believe me? Check here- http://www.jp.sonystyle.com/Guide/Three_y/index.html if you understand Japanese or know how to put stuff into a machine translator like Livedoor) Yes, I go to Japan a lot, and buy my laptops there- amazing how well Sony treats customers there (no rootkit DRM because they stopped using their Copy Control CD -without rootkit- DRM over there 2 years ago because they thought people were starting to respect copyright more). All my products that I bought in Japan work great- a Vaio TR5EB survived a soup spill into the keyboard with no damage- everything works fine. On the other hand, a Vaio V505 purchased in the States failed after its bottom was wiped with a damp cloth, something that my TR5EB has survived numerous times.

"Linux doesn't count b/c it is not user friendly and is too difficult to use for the average user."

Not at all true. I happen to be a distribution maintainer myself, and as a result get a lot of e-mails from people who have tried my system, like it, and wanted to tell me what they thought. A lot of them have never even heard of Linux before, and yet they have no problems with it. (Even though the installation is supposed to be tricky - I guess it really isn't!)

And yes, if you're wondering, everyone in my family is addicted... my parents especially used to be die-hard Microsoft people who absolutely refused to switch, but then as soon as they saw my distro in action they were immediately hooked. A lot of their friends are, too - when I'm not updating the thing, I typically spend half my time burning new copies of the LiveCD for everyone I know who wants a copy.

The only real reason that people don't switch, as far as I can tell, is because they don't really know that there's other options, or else they just stubbornly refuse to listen to anything except FUD like this. But once they switch, it's almost impossible to convince them to go back :-)

@ Martin Ultima:

That is a small isolated situation though...plus there are so many flavors of Linux it will confuse people. With Windows XP there are only 2 choices for them (Home and Pro) but Home is more then enough for the average user not doing complicated home networking. PLUS with Linux you don't have the software support like Windows (games, office productivity, desktop publishing, etc.)

Until Linux is somehow able to be as user friendly as Widnows with the broad software and hardware support, it will continue to be a niche OS. Plain and simple.

Maybe I could see the microsoft claim. But seriously, nintendo? You could throw one of their products in the washer for a hour and it will come out working. They have always maintained strict quality control and excellent customer service. That is kind of what a lot of their reputation has been built on for the past 25 years. :/
