Mine is the Samsung but its not that quiet.. But 2night while playing Elder Scrolls, it froze a lil (first time ever) and then I heard the drive quiet down.. Scared me a lil, then everything went to normal but I could barely hear the drive, but it was still working just as normal.. Think its quite strange, you bet Ill be paying close attention in the next few days..

Well, I have a Samsung drive in my 360. I agree that it is loud but as loud as I would expect for a fast DVD-ROM drive in a small enclosure like that. I am not sure how loud the Hitachi is, since my 360 is the only one I commonly play.

Also, fast PC DVD-ROM drives are loud as well but thanks to the smaller casing of the 360, that noise is amplified. Though I seen some CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives in some PCs that were MUCH louder than the 360, but once again it was due to their casing.

So until companies change some major components to figure out how to make the drives run quieter, they can't exactly make it super quiet, at least not right now.

Also, the Dreamcast's drive was loud as well. It wasn't constant but when it was reading the disc, it was relatively loud.

I have a Samsung and it's loud as hell... Playing Oblivion makes it even louder for some reason.
