EGM: DS Lite arriving in May!

The latest issue of EGM reports that the DS Lite is "due in May" on North American shores. The snippet coincides with 1Up's recent speculation, but does not contain further information that would validate this claim. Consider this a rumor — for now.

You forgot to mention that whole thing with New Super Mario Bros. being delayed until May...seems awfully suspicious to me...
I seem to remember another hit first-party sequel that was to debut on one of their systems but then got pushed back so it'd be a launch title for the next-gen system despite still being playable on the original...hmmmm...what was that game again? Something to do with a princess I think...maybe of the twilight variety...

EGM doesn't write entire articles based on a rumor.

I may buy this item. I have a lot of GBA games I would love to play on a bright screen with bigger controls. I am not really into the DS stuff. Eventhough Brain Age, and Animal Crossing looks like fun. I think Nintendo is good for the quirky games and that is what the DS is good for. Anything else I will play on my PSP.

yeahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!

Originally I didn't believe the May DS lite release rumor but I wouldn't mind standing behind this though. However I wouldn't be surprised if it gets pushed back into a solid summer release or early fall. Even if they do launch in May in the USA, they are going to have to drastically increase their production numbers.
I'm not going to be shocked if the launch in May is plagued by poor numbers. I'm still happy I imported a DS lite b/c I don't believe that average Gamer-guy will be able to get a DS lite in the states until Mid-June/early July even if they are released in May.
Sense @ Apr 4th 2006 2:11PM
It may be a rumor, but I'm pretty sure it's right. It just makes sense. E3 is in May, I figure it will come out sometime before or after. The only reason it wouldn't ship in May is if Nintendo can't produce enough for the US market and the ravenous Japanese market.
RB @ Apr 4th 2006 2:18PM
Sweet, hopefully there'll be a bundle w/ the new Mario game. I imagine that would spike sales in North America quite a bit.
Lectoid @ Apr 4th 2006 2:19PM
Well, I have a regular DS, so I guess I can just wait to buy a slightly smaller version of something I already have.
Jesse @ Apr 4th 2006 2:32PM
Remember that was posted on their April issue which is notorious for having April Fools articles.....
don_sf @ Apr 4th 2006 2:39PM
yes i originally thought that there was no point buying the ds lite, it would be smaller and better looking of something which i already had. but i think you missed this comparison video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp7Be1qsblI&search=Nintendo%20DS%20Lite%20Size%20Review%20Baby%20Arm
thats one part of the ds lite. that video made me thing hmmm its okay. and i have to say the ds big is 1 ugly console.
http://www.gametrailers.com/player.php?id=9854&pl=game&type=mov
after watching this mario video, i knew i had to get this game and this console.
im really happy because now it wont be that emabarasing to get my ds out in front of my friends and family. but i would still say the psp looks better. no one was impressed with my ds, but when i got my psp out - boy i could see their faces change.
anotherjeff @ Apr 4th 2006 2:49PM
Since 1up and EGM aren't totally different entities I am very skeptical. I'd be happy to see the DS Lite in May though. Maybe it's a typo, it's supposed to be the DC Lite.
plagiarize @ Apr 4th 2006 3:16PM
Speculation or not, the smart money should be on 'just after E3'. It'd be a heck of a bomb to drop in their press conference to say 'and next week we bring the DS lite our in America!' for one, and for two supply seems to be picking up in Japan which would start making a release next month more feasable. The main thing to watch is the Japanese charts. So long as the lite is selling out in Japan they aren't going to divert supplies elsewhere just yet.
Still, I got mine in the post just last week, so I'm mainly just following this out of curiosity.

#3 - Get a micro if you arent going to be playing any DS games, micro's screen kicks arse too. :)
#8 - Yes, EGM is known for their April Fool's joke, but they are actually funny, this wouldn't be a funny april fool's joke it would just come off as stupid.
Although it is still rumor, EGM is one of the most credible mags out there. I expect late May early April.
Josh @ Apr 4th 2006 3:30PM
Sweet! I take this as confirmation. There is just too much reason for NOA to release this thing on May 21 (Sunday), alongside New Super Mario Bros. I would guess that right now they are stockpiling Lites for the North American market, even though they are depriving the Japanese market of all it can get. Gotta keep both sides happy! Oh yeah, and Europe...and that other place with the kangaroos...
Bob42 @ Apr 4th 2006 3:46PM
This news post is misleading. It says "the latest issue of EGM" has that info, while in fact it is the April issue that has been out for more than 3 weeks. The latest issue of the magazine should arrive at subscribers' homes in the next few days.
skuber @ Apr 4th 2006 4:11PM
Well i'm still happy with my last gen DS - Won't be buying a lite until next year so a delay isn't a problem for me ;) (plus have to get my monies worth out of this DS).
TravistyOJ @ Apr 4th 2006 4:29PM

If the "latest" issue isnt out yet, then its not the "latest" issue. Come on this isnt rocket science. It is possible for a 3 week old monthly issue to be the "latest" issue.

I am still a bit skeptical about a May release. It may sound nice, but, nintendo hasn't announced that much about it let alone a release date, color(s) available on launch. GS and EB aren't taking pre-orders for it. When Nintendo actually announces something, generally they stick to it (in console releases anyhow). They even pushed up the DS Heavy release a week for us good ol Americans to make the Thanksgiving shopping season. EGM probably went to print a while ago so this story's sources might be outdated. Your best bet for getting a DS Lite before summer is importing one. It's just as good, and think of how awesome you will be in front of your DS Heavy friends =) EGM is NOT the best source for news (technically it's outdated)
prfectjon @ Apr 4th 2006 9:35PM
The DS Lite IS coming in late May (early June at the absolute latest). My Nintendo rep has already been told that she'll be replacing our current DS demo unit with a Lite unit in early June, so she said we'll be getting the Lites in store a little before then.
prfectjon @ Apr 4th 2006 9:39PM
And honestly, Nintendo has dropped stuff on us like this with little to no warning before. The new model SPs (with the improved backlight) that come out at the same time as the Micro came out of nowhere. Japan got the Lite a month or two tops after it was officially announced (and we're in about that same time frame).
Josh @ Apr 5th 2006 12:21AM
I'm not a big fan of nintendo stuff, but i have to say, as far portables go, this thing is going to lead the market, hands down.
Apostle @ Apr 5th 2006 5:43AM
Ummm..I hate to bust your bubble..but that was in the April issue...well...Every April, EGM does an Aprils Fools joke...and I'm betting this is it.
Sorry guys...
I imported mine..and let me tell..its sweet!
l.m.orchard @ Apr 5th 2006 7:36AM
This issue also has an article on a hypothetical, butt-ugly "iGame" from Apple. I'd bet that's the April Fool's joke article.
Nick @ Apr 5th 2006 7:42AM
This is pretty much confirmed fact at this point. For weeks not there's been a slew of DS Lite related peripherals slated to ship in May.
Kameron @ Apr 5th 2006 8:22AM
There sure are alot of unbelievers... its entirely possible that the DS lite could be here in may, dispite the shortage. In fact i'm hoping it does come out, because i can't wait to trade my old clunker in on a new slimer stylish version. plus i can't be playing the new Zelda and SMB on an old DS, thats just lame...
Konig @ Apr 9th 2006 1:15AM
Notice that on Nintendo of America's frontpage we see the DS Lite.. close up, but that is the Nintendo DS Lite on their webpage [100% guarantee] before any news of the U.S./European release. It is also on the DS page where ever it mentions the DS Download Station. When they are using as part of their advertisment, we know news is imminent.
