New Super Mario undelayed, out May 15th

The official website for the upcoming DS title, New Super Mario Bros., has been updated again. No more delays this time, instead Nintendo has managed to drop the brothers Mario on us a week earlier!
Seeing as how the DS Lite is "due in May" in North America, we used simple logic, some grade school arithmetic, our intimate knowledge of the Gregorian calendar, and more than a little speculation, to arrive at the possibility that the DS Lite might accompany NSMB May 15th, just days after E3! Oh shiny DS Lite / Mario combo attack, you make us weak in the knees.
[Thanks, Princess Zelda]

Damn Nintendo, they did it again. They delayed Mario DS so long that it went past the end of time, back to the big bang, and 4 billion more years after that until it arrived 2 days before it's original May 17th date.
I don't know about you, but that's a pretty long delay if you ask me.

Im afraid I will have to buy this if they put it in a combo pack with the DS Lite.
darryl @ Apr 5th 2006 11:55AM
I like how they emphasize *NEW*... lol. Bet ya it's the same thing as the previous 325 SMB games.

OMFG Get a girlfriend, no seriously... Nintendo changes the plastic on their handheld and pumps out yet another SMB game and you just about loose it!? Where's the "innovation"? Oh, I forgot, you get to draw stuff on a touch screen whilst trying to play the game on another screen... Fantastic!

Wow, you are an idiot. Overall, this is the... 10th Mario platformer in 20 years.(Mario Brothers, Mario Brothers 2(AKA Lost Levels), Mario Brothers 2 USA(Doki Doki Panic), Mario Brothers 3, Super Mario World, Mario Land, Mario Land 2, Mario 64, Mario Sunshine, New Super Mario Bros.)
Wow, one game every two years, that's REALLY PUSHING IT. Not to mention that this games is full of all new levels, powerups, gameplay elements, moves, and enemies, and has more levels then any other Mario game ever made. The last Mario game was released in 2002. The last game beofre that was freakin 1996.
This makes a total of 3 Mario games in 10 years(not couting re-releases and ports). Oh my God, 3 in 10 years is so much fracking over-saturation.

Hi darryl, you sound like a nice guy. Thanks for stopping by.

Super! Now I have something to play until Twilight Princess is released--oh wait, I meant "delayed" again.

man peopls girlfriends play mario, u probly got a boyfrnd dat luvs army games (loool).
the fact is super mario brothers 3 in the nes is still the best selling game ever. look at the great titles over the years, mario 3d, zelda, tekken, gran turismo, halo, metroid, gta - but the best being DRIV3R. that 8bit game still remains the best selling.
i saw the trailer for this game back at e3 last and and knew i had to get the ds, and now after seeing the gameplay footage on the ds lite, described as 'looking like a print out', i have to get that. and metroid prime hunters is coming out as well. my psp wont get much action in the near future.

darryl, this is the first new traditional (side-scrolling) Mario game since Super Mario Land 2 (I don't count SMW2 because Mario wasn't even a playable character). So, first one since the early 90's.

Carl's on target. The reason why I'm so excited for this game is that it's a 2D side scrolling game. While I enjoyed the 3D marios, I've been waiting for such a long time for a traditional mario game. I always thought Nintendo dropped the ball not having a 2D mario on Gamecube, but now its all good...

I think Darryls point includes all the ports, re-releases AND offshots. There has only been 3 ORIGINAL Mario games in 10 years. There has been countless re-releases and "Enhanced" versions of the same old game made too many times now. How can you NOT count these? Its ridiculous. Mario Kart DS? Looks/plays just like the N64 version with wifi support "but its a great game!" Its not bad, I've played it, but so what? its nothing new, And I felt like I was just playing my good old SNES in 1992, it was ground breaking then, not now. Even the off shot games like Smash party are hitting version 7. There is even a mario dancing game now!! Nintendo are getting just as bad as everyone else with re-releases, sequels and offshots. if not worse!
The Mario franchise is worn out in my opinion.
The only Game I was looking forward to on a Nintendo system of recent times was Unity on GC by Jeff Minter, that went down the pan because the suffering Lionhead decided it was too risky a game to release. What a shame. That game would have given the GC a real boost.

In 2006 a 2D version of Mario? I thought they had taken the piss enough with the Super Mario Advance range of ports on GBA (This is when I really lost respect for Nintendo). At least the DS is capable of some failry decent 3D GFX, and they could use the touch screen better in a 3d game. What do you think they will do for a 2d game on the second screen? Probably just put a stupid map on it like alot of the other "innovative" DS games or go all game and watch on us? "ooo look, you can move from one screen to the other!" big joy bags.
Basically I'm sick and tired of the limited variety in Nintendo's offerings (everything is either Mario Metroid or Zelda). And this "new" Super Mario bros. just smacks of the same old same old with bigger GFX.
Bring back Nintendo of the mid 90's, thats when they truely innovated... its like they have worn themselves out and dont know what else to do. Sony is next I think... Give it 5 years...I hate to say it but Microsoft will probably own both of them in 2015 and we will all be forced to run their crap software forever and LIKE it.
I remember the video games crash of the early 80's (Showing my age). Its gonna happen again at this rate. Biggest culprit? not Nintendo actually... EA.
If only more games were made like Shadow of the Colossus. This game single handedly craps from a high hight on anything from Nintendo or anyone else for that matter. I'm so glad this game has got the recognition it deserves. It puts my failth back in the games industry.
And no i'm not a fanboy of any sort, sorry, I own whatever machine has the games I like. I still play my Dreamcast (best console ever made) along with my PS2, PSP and Xbox360 (only play Geometry Wars on this though for now).
Jason Poswencyk @ Apr 15th 2006 8:49AM
Why don't you make it for gamecube? I bought nintendo game cube because of supermario and you never came out with any cool games for it.

I know I'm a little late in adding this comment, but I just have to respond to the preous post that stated
"

As an owner of the Japanese version of the DS lite, I can honestly say without reservation that it's leaps and bounds ahead of the current generation of the DS hardware. The unit is smaller, thinner, and lighter than the current model (actually a closed lite is about as thick as the bottom half of the normal DS clamshell). The d-pad and buttons are very nice (but the buttons feel a little small, good for pressing a few at once, but easy to do accidentally UNTIL you get used to them, then it's fine). But the biggest improvement of all - the screens. Having adjustable brightness is a wonderful thing. The lowest setting is good for most casual gaming, but if you're bathed in light, or just want thing to look even nicer, you can crank it up to eye-scorching levels. Also, the new backlighting is on-par with the PSP in terms of not casting a bluish hue over the entire screen, as every nintendo handheld has until now. Colors on the DS lite are very rich, and very vibrant, and look exactly as the programmers intended them to. This, however, does cause one little problem - some games were programmed with the blue hue in mind, and now that it's gone, some games look a little greenish. True Swing Golf is a good example - what was once the pefect shade of green on the DS is now a very oversaturated, bright green. Most games are fine, though, and this only seeems to affec a select few titles.
So yeah. The DS lite - not just new plastic.
As for SMB - retro is in now, and Ninteno's taking a classic game that many of us STILL play, giving it a facelift and some new gameplay elements, and introducing it to an audience that honestly may nver have played SMB in the first place, given how popular the DS is among childen that didn't even exist when the N64 was out, let alone the NES. I'm looking forward to it.
