Street Fighter II on XBLA priced, dated -- Cloning Clyde announced
According to VGM's latest
podcast, Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting will be released for the Xbox Live Arcade by the end of April. VGM
reports that the game will cost between $10–15 (800 to 1,200 points). The news comes via Microsoft Canada's
Spring Fling event, where Microsoft also announced Cloning Clyde, a cell-shaded platformer in
development for XBLA. According to VGM, Microsoft has high hopes for Clyde, believing the title could become
'the next Geometry Wars.'[Thanks, Robert]

Can't you buy the SF Anniversary Collection for that price on the PS2/Xbox? Is online play worth the extra money?
If the $10-$15 price sticks, I expect more groaning, and it will be more than justified this time. These aren't the "microtransactions" I'm looking for.
Pickypants @ Apr 7th 2006 11:16AM
Sorry to be a grammar nazi, but you have "paltformers" in the story.
SF2 is worth any price.
Rishard Chapoteau @ Apr 7th 2006 11:19AM
10 bux is fine, 15 is a bit much for that old ass game.
resabeerf @ Apr 7th 2006 11:21AM
Doesnt 10-15$ seem a little over the top? I have been waiting for SF2 to come out on the XBOX360 for some time, but I could just spend the same amount of money for the PS2 version, and feel better about it.
Sjohn @ Apr 7th 2006 11:21AM
Didn't they say "by the end of March" also? I believe they will try to hit the 800 point mark as that is what most games seem to be going for, the only one that cost more is bankshot billards, and that's to entice you to buy the 12 month gold bundle that comes with it for free. I believe most consumers would buy it at 800 but it would drive away a lot at 1200. As I see it, buy two games with my 1600 point card, or a 1200 one and then have the 400 left over (yes those that don't have geometry wars, this would be a great idea for them to buy it with the remaining 400, but still, 2 for 800 each seems better for some reason than one for 1200 than another "Cheapo" for 400.
Captain Obvious @ Apr 7th 2006 11:21AM
PsyClerk, this isn't a microtransaction, this is a game purchase. Microtransactions are what everyone is complaining about on the Oblivion topics. And you don't have to go to the store to get it. You just come home after a long day at the office and download it from you couch. For the same price as it costs without the online component? I'll take it.
tiremfej @ Apr 7th 2006 11:25AM
What's $10 hell even $15 for that matter? 3 or 4 beers, on a night out. I would gladly spend the money on SFII and save my hangover for a later date. Plus you litterally wouldn't be pissing it away in 30 minutes..."SFII last a lifetime 4 beers last 30 minutes."
lunatech @ Apr 7th 2006 11:35AM
"Doesnt 10-15$ seem a little over the top?"
Then don't buy it?
As consumers you have the final say over your dollar my friend. Street fighter is one of those games where there are quite a number of people who are good at it.
It will almost always get heated -- when you play it at home with a friend (resist the urge to strangle the bastard for doing the Zangief cross over Fierce body splash + Low medium kick + 360 grab spin combo)...because that's just skill.
Time to whip out the old
Ryu Jumping roundhouse neck kick + standing medium kick + throw combos....
Oh the good old days when little kids say "that's so cheap!"
This is going to be a well spent 10-15 dollars for me I think...
heavyness @ Apr 7th 2006 11:38AM
$15 for SF2? come on people, never mind it is one of the best games [ever] but it's a fighting game, ONLINE. those types of games never get old. there will always be someone out there that can beat your Ryu or E. Honda. plus with leaderboards, you can see how bad [or good] your doing against the word.
and quarter mode representing old school arcades!
HalcyonGT @ Apr 7th 2006 11:48AM
I don't see what the big deal is. If you don't feel justified by it, then don't buy it.
This version of the game is meant to bring back the feeling of standing in line waiting for a chance to fight whoever is owning the machine.
I imagine the stats will include things like how long you played before losing a spot...
I spent my teenage years playing SF2 in the arcades...crowded around a single machine with 15 other people trying to put their quarter up for the next match. And thats what this version of SF2 will employ...putting your virtual quarter up and watching the fight before your turn comes.
in5ane @ Apr 7th 2006 11:51AM
I've been playing the original Street Fighter II via MAME with a Xbox 360 wired USB joypad lately- I'm pretty disappointed with the experience as the stick doesn't feel right, and the 360 d-pad just isn't up to the task. It's made me think twice about getting it tbh- do I really need another version of SF2 when I have like 10 for other systems... Online is cool, but we've been able to haduken via Live since 2003. Guess for once I'll hang back and see what people are saying once it's out :)
lunatech @ Apr 7th 2006 11:58AM
The trigger buttons on the 360 controller are not as deep as say the original Xbox controllers...
That was the biggest concern because the trigger buttons were used to link combos (usually medium kicks/punches).
From what I remember, the absolute best controller for SF was the Super nintendo controller (shoulder buttons were buttons and combos are easy to accomplish). The original playstation controller (not the dual shock) was a great controller for SF also.
The xbox 360 trigger may be a little deep still...and the bumper buttons at the top aren't situated well enough to use the linking mediums kicks/punches.
Might need to get an old school arcade stick modded for the 360.
gamejunkie @ Apr 7th 2006 12:01PM
So I guess this means that Aniversery Collection will never be emulated for the 360... That's total BS.
I've been playing the japanese version for about a year and a half over live, but it would be nice to have it working on the 360 without needing to rebuy it again.

I'm sorry, but vague info is not really telling us much..
"priced" $10-$15.. thats not a price, any of us could have already told you that it would be in this price RANGE.
"dated"
by the end of april.. um.. yeah.. real dated.. thanks.
MosquitoControl @ Apr 7th 2006 12:34PM
$10 to $15 is too much for me. Annoying, too. XBLA games, to me, should be $5. Especially ports.
I understand why this is $10, though. They have no problem porting this and selling it on CD for $20 to $30. They know they can get the $10 without question from most gamers.
Just not me.
NightOwl @ Apr 7th 2006 12:34PM
I'd pay 50 bucks for SF2 on XBL.
While I'm not saying everyone would, I'm sure 15 bucks for this game is only too much for those who are not old enough to remember when this title was in its prime. This is "the" king of fighters and for all the kiddies who don't get it....don't get it.
We'd get annoyed by your whining about 2d graphics after we beat you down a few times anyway.
Muhahaha...
SHO-RYU-KEN!

According to VGM, Microsoft has high hopes for Clyde, believing the title could become 'the next Geometry Wars.'
Don't forget, these are the same people who think that their Pinata game will be 'the next Pokemon'.
isuma @ Apr 7th 2006 1:02PM
This makes me wonder how much Nintendo will charge for their back catalog. No doubt some games will cost more than others, but, what would the range be? $5 for older NES titles or $20 for N64 classics?
epobirs @ Apr 7th 2006 1:10PM
Just remember that most of online distribution is a work in progress. There is still a lot of work to do and real world trials needed before they find what works for the mainstream audience. You cast votes with your wallet. If a product proves more profitable by volume at a lower price they can always rebate the difference in points to those few who paid the original price.
OTAM @ Apr 7th 2006 1:14PM
love the people on here who say "Just don't download it if you don't want it" or "It's only 2 dollars". Its's not the point of how much it costs it the damn principal of it.It's about along the same lines of saying "If you don't like the new games that come out then don't buy them". Why? So I should just sit there and miss out on something I love like gaming because 1 in every 200 games is actually worthwhile because nobody says anything about the shit games? No,it doesnt work like that. WE HAVE A RIGHT TO BITCH. If you lived in a shitty state of slavery would you just sit there and not saying anything? Hell NO! You are the consumer and gaming is YOUR hobby and passion so you can STAND UP AND BITCH when people are taking it to a different direction that you (and alot of others) don't like. YOU are the one who buys the products. If you don't like Madden and other crappy games being churned out every single day then START BITCHING,it's your right to as a gamer who pays keeps these companies in business in buying their product. This is essentially your hobby and market with you being the consumer so if you don't like the direction it's going in then you voice what you feel.
Enough of this "If you don't like it don't buy it". No,it doesnt work like that, because you know why,the companies will see nobody is complaining and continue to churn out shit games and get you for highway robbery with shit like this. I don't like having to pay for these goofy things like extra cars and wallpaper. How about this one,I already bought the system for $400,a $59.99 game and subscription to Xbox live, now it's YOUR TURN to give me something as a loyal customer by giving me this bonus content free as a "here's a little extra for buying our games and system",not take take and take some more. They try to nickle and dime us to death. Here Microsoft,i'll just open up my wallet and give you everything in it. No,just take it all,it's basically what you want in the end so why not just cut out the foreplay.
It's a friggin wallpaper,i'm sure you didnt spend 3 months working 14 hour shifts to come up with a f'ing Dashboard theme.I think that if you buy a game like say...Ghost Recon that on that game disc there will be the Ghost Recon themes and gamerpictures for you to copy to the harddrive because you bought the game to start with. There's a line that has to be drawn with these companies and now finally people are speaking out about it. I commend you guys who are actually putting your foot down and not being the mindless gamers who just accept everything the way it is. You don't like what these companies are doing? YOU TELL THEM ABOUT IT,let your voice be heard and maybe they'll stop trying to take us for all they can. I'm not even going to get started on the $59.99 pricetag these games carry.
My favorite part is how "It's only cosmetic,it doenst change the gameplay" Well, how about this one. Next time you bring home your new game you only get one weapon and character costume. There will be more weapons in the game with different stats and such but it looks like a plain sword on your screen. Then you have to go into the marketplace to buy new "skins" to make your weapons look like actual things. I mean,it doesnt directly effect the game it's just as you say "purely cosmetic". So I guess there's no bitching involved then right?
Or how about the next fighting game you have like DOA or Soul Calibur you don't actually get the costumes by earning them from playing the game you just open up your wallet and spend even more for them. Better yet,I can't wait for the wrestling games with the build a wrestler mode. I mean,i'm hoping that ALL the stuff in the game to create your wrestler has to be paid for one item at a time in the marketplace. Want a tshirt for your wrestler? 2 dollars please. Oh,you want to change his shoes later down the road? Oh well i'm sorry, that's another 2 dollars. No more money left? Well, sucks to be you, thanks for buying our $59.99 game!
$10-$15 is ok for a game like street fighter. The games I have no problems with,it's how they find the ability no matter WHAT to nickle and dime us to death for shit like godforbid a wallpaper.
I mean,it's purely cosmetic right?
WhetOne @ Apr 7th 2006 1:22PM
Considering how many quarters I chunked into this game way back when... $10 is the equivalent of 40 quarters. That ain't much. So I feel $10 is justified, but it still bites my balls that a port is taking so damn long. What do they have to do to it? 720p isn't going to make it look much better. I guess the online is giving them problems or perhaps dealing with the shitty D-pad. Anyway, I'd love to see this come out at $5 just so that I can destroy that many more people, but $10 wouldn't hurt my feelings at all. Then again, Geo Wars is kinda lonely down there in $5 game land...
pixelate @ Apr 7th 2006 1:27PM
take a breath, OTAM.
i'll definitely be paying the $10-15... i'm not the greatest at SF2, but i'll be jumping in.
is there going to be a spectator mode like DOA or PGR3...? sometimes watching really good street fighter players is almost as fun as competing yourself. and if they really want to recreate the arcade experience, they HAVE to let everyone watch!
p-diddy @ Apr 7th 2006 1:42PM
OTAM, honestly, which says more to the comapnies: people griping on a website that some marketdroid doesn't even know about, or the sales chart he is adding to his powerpoint that shows no one bought the game? Voting with your wallet will always trump grousing on a forum.

To those of you complaining about the gamepad sucking for fighters, you are right. The xbox and the 360 controllers are just horrible for fighters. That's why I went and built a joystick for 360, in time for SF2. Unfortunately I've had to wait longer than expected for SF2 to drop.
Anyways, here is a link to the tutorial I created if you want to make your SF:AC joystick (or any joystick for that matter) work on the 360.

I think OTAM hit it right on the head with his post. Simply not buying it is not enough...this is a crucial time in pricing, and given MS has a strategy, they might be shooting a little too high at these prices if they want heavy saturation and we have a place as consumers and gamers to just say "nice try."
I look at something like Geometry Wars as the perfect example of how XBLA should be done. It's cheap ($5), fun and straight forward. I also see games like Gauntlet and any of the card games that should have much lower pricepoints than 800.
I understand it's a business, and I understand MS desperately wants to turn a profit on console gaming to prove that it can be done, but in my mind, the best way to do that is great prices on a wide selection. I know for a fact I would have bought at least 4 or 5 of the XBLA games by now if there were all $5, but as it stands I look at $10-15 as too much.
mav @ Apr 7th 2006 2:35PM
Further, I don't know if a company is obligated to give you things for free because you buy stuff from them. I don't go my local grocery store and be all like "Fuck you man, I buy milk here every week. Give me some free eggs."
If you don't want a gamer picture or a dashbord theme, don't buy it. It's not even part of the actual GAME, right? It's something extra. If you don't wanna pay twobux for a horse reskin (heh) then don't.
You already received something for your money. You paid Best Buy (or whomever) $400 and they give you an Xbox. You pay Best Buy $59.99 and they give you a game for the Xbox. That doesn't make you entitled to *extra* things because you spent money.
Now, whether or not that game is worth the $59.99 in the first place is a different debate entirely. If you feel it's not, like somebody else said above, vote with your dollars. See that others do the same. It's the best way to get attention.
Lee @ Apr 7th 2006 2:44PM
It is a bit much. One thing that's really annoyed me about Street Fighter (and KoF for that matter) is how little effort it would take to UPGRADE THE SPRITES!
How long can it really take to give us some shiny hi-res sprites? $10-15? Given the age of the game it's pretty high. I'd stick with my SF2 anniversary edition simply because I have the arcade sticks for my PS2.
Online play does have its appeal, and that's where they will sell it. Hell, I'd probably wind up buying it. But the controller's not ideal, and I know I'll be the one whining "If I had my arcade sticks I would've won!" =P
I just wish they'd throw people a bone, with the number of re-releases of this one game (I've bought too many of them) the least they can do is actually give it an upgrade. After SF3 flopped they have just completely abandoned it, shiny new sprites and all.
If they're charging $10-15 for the SNES games for the Revolution, they will not be doing so well.
Though having said that, it makes me think about whether they'll enable online multiplayer for their downloaded games? Damn slim chance but it'd guarantee sales. All of the classic multiplayer N64 games online...
~wet dreams~
ElChibo @ Apr 7th 2006 3:30PM
$10-$15 IS SO MUCH MONEY!!! Why would anyone want to pay that much for a game thats years and years and years old. It makes no sense. It should be no more than $5.
The ZeroCorpse @ Apr 7th 2006 3:32PM
I'd pay about $12 for the game IF:
* The graphics are polished up a bit.
* The round-robin rules of online play are enforced well.
* The port is otherwise EXACT and doesn't have any gameplay quirks.
* We can watch others play when waiting for our turn to challenege the winner.
But I'm still hoping someone will wake up and translate the C=64's "Mail Order Monsters" to the new generation consoles. It would be a huge hit on XBox Live.
MarxMarvelous37 @ Apr 7th 2006 3:34PM
Am I the only person who remembers people thinking it was going to be the most expensive XBLA game out there when they first announced it ($20+)?
I'm in for $10-15.
Mike @ Apr 7th 2006 4:13PM
I bet these people complaining about $10-$15 for an old game have a copy of some old Mario game on their GBA or DS. It's freakin' less than $20 AND you get to play online! I mean, you paid at least $400 for a 360 (remember you need the HD to download). If you can't afford $15 you need to get your priorities in order and sell your console.
gamejunkie @ Apr 7th 2006 4:55PM
You guys do know Street Fighter: Anniversary Collection included every SF2 and SF: Third Strike and it was playable worldwide over live, right? I paid like $60 to import my copy like 2 years ago and I think that was a pretty good deal. But, $15-$20 just for Hyper is a total rip off. Live lets them cut so much cost from production, distribution, and retail mark up that they should be able to sell the game for less than $10, maybe even $5. I mean they're only paying for the bandwidth for you to download the game.
Dark @ Apr 7th 2006 7:36PM
Anyone know if the DOA 4 joystick would be close to comparable for SFII?
Donutta @ Apr 8th 2006 1:14AM
No one, and I mean no one, is allowed to bring up SF:AC. The version of SF2 on that version was absolute shit. And that's not even counting the fact that it had the worst lag ever. That's why I was actually glad to see Capcom had delayed this; I want a game were I can play people from all over the world, not just my neck of the woods. Keep it true to the arcade, give it some good, non-lagging online play, and I'll give you $15 for it.
I guess I better brush up on my skills. Why do I see the online mode becoming one of the most humilating experiences ever?
Tigger @ Apr 8th 2006 12:31PM
You know I was checking the XBL Marketplace several times every day during March for the SF2 release and when it didn't show I was about to get annoyed when I asked myself a very important thing.
Why do I care???
Don't get me wrong - I love SF2, but lets face it. Capcom just don't deliver the goods these days. Everything they do has a fatal flaw or some 'feature' that will drive you crazy. They even find new flaws to add into rehashes of old games such as this that never used to exist. Even getting a simple release organised is beyond them these days.
Anyone who ever had Line Of Contact will be able to give you a true account of what Capcom has become.
I purchased SF: Anniversary Collection for my Xbox (1) when that hit the shelves and I probably played that twice. Having unconfigurable button layouts was a nice suprise from Capcom with that one.
I'll buy SF2 when it arrives, but I've stopped caring about it now. Getting excited about the new release on 360 arcade dulled my senses to the previous pain that has been inflicted by Capcom. Messing us around with the release rubbed salt in the old wounds.
