Freud would have been proud. Xantar, the "Literary Snob" at Pure Video Games, has been
psychoanalyzing the gaming industry. Last month he began by discussing the schizophrenia
of Sony (a great read, if you have some time). Today, Xantar published part 2 of eventually 4: Microsoft's
inferiority and superiority complex. How can it be both, you say? Seems rather paradoxical, but think about it: Microsoft is one of the biggest companies in the world, yet its hold on the console market is negligible and its Japanese Xbox 360 launch was ... well ... not so good. Microsoft, however, still talking big like it has done so successfully with Windows and Microsoft Office.
In conclusion, Xantar suggests that "whatever the case, what Microsoft needs to do is take a deep breath, step back and acknowledge that right now, the videogame industry doesn’t revolve around them ... consistently excellent performance in delivering great gaming is quite sufficient all by itself." PR trash talk is going to exist, whether its Iwata or Kutaragi or J Allard, but the advice is sound, if wholly unrealistic. Definitely worth a read.
