What we already know:

EA holds the license to James Bond games
Rare holds the IP to the GoldenEye 007 game
which was published by Nintendo
MGM owns the rights to James Bond.

Here's the funny part noone has mentioned yet:

Sony owns MGM.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it on Joystiq that I just read (maybe a couple of weeks ago) that there will be NO Rare titles on the Revo?

Wrong the Donkey Kong games developed by Rare would show up on the virtual console. Those properties are fully owned by Nintendo.

I wouldn't be surprised if some sort of deal is made. After all Rare games were thought not to come to the GBA but they have. Microsoft worked out a deal. They get some cash from each sale of those gba Rare developed titles.

Well, I'm just hoping the Goldeneye Source (http://www.goldeneyesource.com/) and Perfect Dark Source (http://www.pdark-mod.com/) mods will make it to final release. They look promising, especially the PD one.

Goddamnit slow news day... I was going to bring that up. You beat me to it. :/

Cassiel... there are a lot of Rare titles that Nintendo owns the rights to... Donkey Kong Country, Star Fox Adventures, Diddy Kong Racing and so on. There's also a few they don't own... like Blast Corps, Perfect Dark, Conker (Pocket Tales or Bad Fur Day) and Killer Instinct. Nintendo has the rights to put whatever games carrying their own IPs on the Revolution as they please.

However, while it may have not yet been announced that they'll be adding to the Revolution's VC library, Microsoft and Rare are not against publishing for Nintendo... as Age of Empires, Banjo Pilot, It's Mr. Pants, and Mechwarrior DS all prove. They even brought Rare back on recently to port the DKC trilogy to GBA. So I don't think it'd be too much of a stretch to see Rare titles on the VC.

The only think is, if that happened, we'd likely see something like Perfect Dark on the console... and not Goldeneye, due to EA's current grip on the license and the fact that MGM has recently been gobbled up by Sony. Sony Pictures may as well be a completely seperate entity from SCEI, but... I still don't see Sony being too fond with lending Nintendo the license.

Here's an idea for everyone: go find your/buy another N64 and get the original out and play. It's still just as fun today as it was in 1997. Best console FPS to this day... eat your heart out, Halo.

i just wanna know if i will be able to play goldeneye, perfect dark, and jet force gemeni on Rev. i will be so pissed if i can't. the answer is prolly yes, since at E3 nintendo said we would be able to play every game that was released on their systems and i guess now some sega games too. but someone let me know what is going on.

Some things I want to fix: We all know EA holds the licencse to the James Bond games. We know MGM owns the rights to James Bond. We know Sony owns MGM. However, Rare DOES NOT own the IP to GoldenEye 007. Nintendo currently holds the license to the GoldenEye movie, and had Rare develop the game for it. Since this is a huge legal tangle, it's no wonder these companies don't want to really talk about GoldenEye much (EA holding the James Bond license, yet Nintendo owning the popular GoldenEye movie license).

And I'm a little peeved at the ignorance of Greenberg, considering many N64 games are smaller than 64MB, which should easily fit that XBLA requirement. Yet I do understand that it doesn't really fit with the current model, which is to have short, quick, fun games.

Also, does no one see the legal problems if Microsoft decides to bring Rare's N64 games to XBLA? Here's the problem: THEY WERE MADE ON THE N64. Now, I may be wrong in all of this, but the N64 is Nintendo's property, so therefore the developers/publishers would need the console manufacturer's permission to have their games run on another hardware.

So, most likely it's up to Nintendo to negotiate with EA about putting GE on Rev. And apparently, they have a really good business relationship; Nintendo really revere EA's publishing/marketing skills, so let's hope it happens...

...Good point about Rare's N64 games working on VC/XBLA, though... wouldn't they have to emulate the inner workings of the N64?

First of all, Goldeneye is a 128 megabit cartridge. The game itself is only 18 megaBYTES. That's about the size of the HD Robotron 2084 on Xbox Live Arcade. There's nothing to be questioning here. It could be downloaded and would fit in the service.

The problem is that this is a N64 game. Microsoft isn't going to risk making their own N64 emulator for Live for extremely obvious reasons, particularly because they'd effectively be charging for it.

Either these games will have to wind up on Nintendo consoles (unlikely, as we all know) or MS is going to have to have Rare remake them in some way, ala Conker. Even if they stuck with the original graphics and processing ability, their N64 games were made on N64 development kits. They'd have to be recoded and who knows if Microsoft even thinks that's worth the time. I severely doubt Nintendo will just be like "That's cool."

... and this is totally ignoring the fact that EA owns the Bond rights now.

If it was this simple, why wouldn't they try including the original Perfect Dark in PDZ?

Has there been any legal precedents on the matter of reissuing licensed videogame properties.
It seems to me it is not as simple as company x owns the movie license. Especially in regards to Rare/Nintendo/MS dynamics. As well as whether the game is considered a reprint, a remake, a reissue or what exactly. And how long the original rights were granted for such reprints. I would be shocked if the convoluted world of rights was as simple as EA owns/rents the Bond license so any previous Bond game can never be issued again in any forms.

Many of the games Rare made on the N64 ARE NOT NINTENDO'S GAMES. Therefore, Rare has rights to do whatever the fuck they want with such properties.

Take Conker's Bad Fur Day for example. Other than touched up graphics and a somewhat souped up and online capable multiplayer mode, Conker Live & Uncut is a flippin' carbon copy. It's the same game.

They're talking about bringing Banjo-Kazooie to the 360 next. Get your facts straight.

For those of you who are arguing over the size of Goldeneye, it was on an 8mb cart, as was all early games like Super Mario 64 and Blast Corps. The largest games to grace the console were Conkers Bad Fur Day and Resident Evil 2, both at 64mb. Other hits like Turok 2 and Zelda:OOT were 32mb (zelda MIGHT be 16mb, but i'm not positive). But also it needs to be realised that these were heavily compressed files made for cartridges. Try downloading them as a rom and watch the filesize nearly quadruple in same cases.
