Insane Spider-Man DDR dance routine
What do you get when you mix a DDR machine with the plot of Spider-Man? A very entertaining performance, that's what. Watch as Bruce Leroy performs Peter Parker's transformation into Spider-Man -- complete with camera and "spidey sense" -- through the medium of Dance Dance Revolution. We agree with our tipster: the best part is when the crowd suddenly realizes what hell he's doing.[Thanks, Fallon]

I haven't seen a freestyle routine that cool in years and years. I'm glad there's still someone in the scene.
racco @ Apr 13th 2006 9:00AM
bet his score was shit
Kye @ Apr 13th 2006 9:22AM
He actually hit a few errr notes on time (I think)
What made me smile was the guy wearing a santa hat >bottom right<
:)
RocketSeason @ Apr 13th 2006 9:35AM
oh no he DIDN'T! OOOOOOOOOOOHHHHH!!!!
Seriously, I am now dumber for watching this. That was unbearably stupid.
Thankyou.
nyc @ Apr 13th 2006 9:45AM
What the fuck that was completely retarded
MSaccarello @ Apr 13th 2006 9:51AM
and that was worthy of a post because...
that had nothing to do with anything
RocketSeason @ Apr 13th 2006 10:10AM
whats sad is someone spent some serious time preparing that spiderman image to go along with the post.
PR @ Apr 13th 2006 10:11AM
I havent seen anything that shit since i looked down the pan...
JD @ Apr 13th 2006 10:19AM
Oh man, the haters.
I have to admit that the "interpretive Spiderman dance" was a bit weak, but he did it WHILE playing DDR.
You've gotta give him some props for that. If I fell playing double DDR, it wouldn't be because I planned it.
Conrad Quilty-Harper @ Apr 13th 2006 10:24AM
Thank you JD! At least someone knows when respect is due. RocketSeason, that image took about 10 minutes work in Photoshop.
Soapyshoes @ Apr 13th 2006 10:43AM
I think the best part was when someone yelled, "SPIDERMAN PELVIC THRUST!"
CoffeeJedi @ Apr 13th 2006 10:43AM
Was he really "playing" DDR? It was a good freestyle routine, but it looked like he was just using the DDR crowd for an audience, and the machine for his music, but he didn't actually care about playing the game.
Is this kinda normal? I know that the DDR crowd tends to have their own styles and trends. A friend of mine was really into it, but the whole scene kind of baffled me.
RocketSeason @ Apr 13th 2006 10:45AM
Thats 10 minutes to long Conrad.
Look, I can't dance to save my life alright, But I am not going to jump up and down waving my arms in the air like an idiot and yelling "OOOOOOHHHH!!!" if I see some dude playing DDR while taking off his jacket.
It's just stupid. Sorry.
T @ Apr 13th 2006 10:52AM
Lame.
Bill Pendry @ Apr 13th 2006 10:54AM
You just tricked me into watching a mime performance. Thanks.
CG @ Apr 13th 2006 10:56AM
#11, that's basically what a freestyle routine entails--putting together some sort of routine while hitting enough steps so that you don't fail the song. Yes, his score probably sucked, but if it was a tournament, judges were probably just rating the routine. They usually would have a separate tournament for score.
nemi @ Apr 13th 2006 10:56AM
Hard to belive though it is - good DDR dance players know certain DDR tracks SO WELL that they can get near 100% socre while not looking at or facing the screen.
Similar with good MUSICIANS who can play an entire tune on a keybaord without the sheet music in front of them.
So this person has learnt what squares he has to be on at what times and done his own frestyle that "hits the buttons".
jadenguy @ Apr 13th 2006 11:16AM
none of the writers here at joystiq are getting a pulitzer for their work here. they blog about games because they enjoy games and enjoy people enjoying games. if you can't enjoy people enjoying games, get the heck out.
Emory @ Apr 13th 2006 11:29AM
Careful, watching Spider-Man dance will turn you gay.
Paul @ Apr 13th 2006 11:33AM
Is the converse true, Emory? Will watching gay people dance make you Spiderman?
CheekyLee @ Apr 13th 2006 11:34AM
I'll admit that I wasn't massively impressed with the video itself, but to those compaining about it being posted ....
Grow up. Seriously.
DDR is a VIDEOGAME. This is a blog about VIDEOGAMES. You probably knew before clicking the link that you weren't going to like what you saw, and yet you still clicked anyway. And then spent another 2 minutes of your life that you'll never get back complaining.
pete @ Apr 13th 2006 11:48AM

Demanding a degree of quality and relevance isn't such a sin, my friends. The New York Times is a newspaper that reports "news." That doesn't mean its readers don't expect a certain degree of professionalism and relevance.
I don't mind you posting this, but I have every right, like others here, to call it completely lame and implore Joystiq to avoid this kind of drivel. Better no news than non-news.
Of course, I'll get another -1 Star for this post hahahha. But it's ok, I still love you joystiq (sometimes).
mandarin @ Apr 13th 2006 12:00PM
I dont get it, what does this have to do with video games? He was just on the DDR platform.
The next time you post something like this, might as well tell us beforehand that this has nothing to do with DDR.
soupbun @ Apr 13th 2006 12:15PM
God, the whiners who cry and complain about free stuff here. You don't like what you read here, take your ass somewhere else!!
Matt E. @ Apr 13th 2006 1:02PM
OK. I'm not complaining about the actual video, but I think describing it as "insane" was a bit much. "Insane" would have fit if the dancer actually starting climbing the walls. Now that's insane.
ger @ Apr 13th 2006 1:12PM
eh, he had a couple of good moves but over all pretty weak. i see better dancers on the weekend when i go out. He's def no David Elsewhere
Javitud @ Apr 13th 2006 1:32PM
It's pretty obvious that few people here actually knew the concept of DDR freestyling before watching this. That's understandable, but still doesn't warrant the negative comments.
That was a pretty well done freestyle, definitely one of the funnier ones that I've seen lately. Good music choice too, especially the use of the stop at the middle. And the title of the song (Insertion) actually kind of makes sense with the routine.
If anyone wants to see some classic freestyles, check these out.

no one asked you to come read the blogs here, so don't talk about opportunity costs here!! Do you get email asking you to click here?! Once again, if you don't like the contents, take your ass somewhere else!!
CG @ Apr 13th 2006 2:20PM
#23, uhhh, he was playing the game while doing it. So that has to do with DDR.
Joe @ Apr 13th 2006 4:16PM
He wasn't "playing" the game. I hate players at music-based games, who instead of practicing at the game to make themselves better all around, they memorize 1 or 2 songs that will impress a crowd. It happens w/ DDr, and now also Guitar Hero. That's not playing; it's like studying for a test. They memorize the steps to impress people, not to have fun. Having fun is what gaming's all about.
devonair @ Apr 13th 2006 5:16PM
Okay, I'm biased: I'm a professional hip hop dancer, freestyler, and bboy... in other words, I'm going to be extra critical in regards to his dancing. For the most part, it looks like this guy is a pseudo-popper. While he does have some decent waves, his popping in general was very basic. As for this being a DDR freestyle... Isn't part of the goal of those things to not only dance on the dance pads, but also successfully play the game at the same time? I.e., shouldn't he be hitting the correct arrow-pattern in time with his dance moves (even if he's facing away from the monitor -- since, yes, many great DDR players know the patterns well enough to do it blindfolded or facing away). I couldn't see the monitor well-enough, but the foot patterns he was using sure didn't appear to be matching the gameplay on the monitor behind him. Hmm... so to sum up: he didn't play the game well, AND the dancing was weak? How does this translate into a good DDR freestyle? (Oh, and props to the commenter that mentioned David Elsewhere... THAT guy is amazing, and an idol to poppers everywhere.)

hence the fact that joystiq is a BLOGGING site.....

Honestly...
ThePete @ Apr 13th 2006 10:37PM
Just a quick point, if I didn't know beforehand that he was supposed to be doing the Spider-Man story I'd have NO IDEA that he was doing the Spider-Man story. Maaaaybe at the very end when he drops into that classic Spidey pose, but everything else I just found puzzling and vague.
"Oo, he's got a camera!"
"Oo, he's got a red shirt on under his jacekt!"
"Hey, he's a mime now!"
"OMG, he fell!"
Um, where's the Spider-Man part?
AFD @ Apr 13th 2006 11:05PM
I too am a professional b-boy.. oh wait, no. Found the dance entertaining, but just couldn't take the "ooooohhh" from the crowd every few seconds. Reminded me exactly of the South Park dance-off episode (You Got F*cked in the Ass, Ep. 115 Season 8).
"You got served and just stood there and took it?"

I just love how half of you faggots know NOTHING about DDR Freestyle tournaments. It's not about hitting all the arrows; it's about how good you look and how confident you are while you're up there. What, did you expect him to choose Heavy Mode and try to dance? That's what PA is for.
People...idiots aplenty.
Stephen @ Apr 14th 2006 1:04PM
"36. I just love how half of you faggots know NOTHING about DDR"
And I just love how you assume that half of the people here are faggots.
Ooo, looks like someone got offended when people insulted his precious DDR. Pathetic.
