Aren't you confusing Activision's Call of Duty and EA's Medal of Honor with each other in the article?

I don't agree with the statement that EA's Game Face brand is visionary or compelling. Certainly it's a feature that enriches games and creates empathy, but it's been a growing and integrated feature of 3D video games ever since 1997. About this time is when Capcom and Sega both independently came up with the concept of swapping out face textures to match the changing emtional state of the character, in the Resident Evil and Virtua Fighter franchises respectively. It's no more computationally complex to do this with a moving wireframe face or a larger number of distinct emotions, since it's just a graphical change in response to a variable.

The only thing that's new is that EA gave the technology a nifty name. Again, the demonstrated result is that Electronic Arts has skills in marketing and promotion that are not matched by the quality or the originality of their product.

Now that'll make EA create some good games...

It's just PR, Corporate bullsh*t PR. And when it comes from EA it's even worse

Has anyone else noticed that our pal Neil Young looks exactly like one of the Spanish zombie-type fellas in Resident Evil 4?

I have "one of those endearing English accents", but I only use my presentational powers for good.

I'll get on to the Prime Minister and tell him one of our boy's has escaped and joined the axis of evil(EA)sorry about that.

Vlad, you're a better writer than that. I read your whole article, and have no freaking idea what you're talking about. Emotion Capture(TM) technology consists of displaying a graphic violent act?

Little Mermaid has more facial animation than Snow White?

Sorry, I don't buy it.

"He introduced the topic by first showing a screenshot of the box art for rival Activision's blockbuster Call of Duty series. When the box art appeared, Young said, "In World War II FPS, it galls me to say that this is the state of the art"

So instead of making a better game than Call Of Duty, they decide that all Medal of Honor needs is better facial animations?

Losers.

The reason why Call of Duty kicks MOH's ass is because it's a better GAME all around, you freaking twit.

Nice misuse of the word 'snuff film'. It's not a snuff film if someone doesn't really die (or other horrible thing happen to them). Animated characters definitely do not count.

Sorry people, but EA represents everthing that is wrong with the videogame industry. After all, this is the same company that basically resells the same games year after year, with only minor upgrades. EA shouldn't be praised; they should be firebombed...

You have to give them credit for the eye candy though. Nothing more than that.

Except maybe that English accent. Everyone knows English accents sell games.

Personally, I thought the presentation was extremely disappointing. Young cited games like GTA, The Sims, and so on, but he doesn't understand that those games are the result of true creative innovation, not management overlords saying "We must meed a quota of 1-3 feature innovations per year." The corporate cynicism behind the concept of a quota on innovation is almost suffocating, and it's very indicative of today's modern commoditized game industry. I'm sure a couple cool features will result from this initiatve, but it's not going to result into any games that truly shape innovation; it'll just be features that overpromise "cinematic quality" or something and the people who for some reason keep buying each of the 356204 WWII games that come out every month will buy it and be amazed at the dude who got shot in the neck.

Honestly, I came in half expecting and hoping Young to announce that they had opened up or set aside a development studio for the express purpose of thinking of truly innovative or creative game ideas. But no, it's just more of the game industry assemblyline mentality, separated into quotas and bullet points.

EA may also want to start swearing at a Brothers in Arms box. Gearbox is doing some pretty cool stuff in the next one. And by that I mean more than just facial expressions.

But seriously, why is EA touting THAT as the great thing in the next MOH? The whole open ended, start the mission anywhere you want feature is WAY more compelling than what was shown at that demonstration.

So in other words: EA is going to work hard at making games look better and continue their long-standing track record of bad-to-mediocre gameplay? This "innovation" sounds like these guys are jonesing to get into the movie business and create a S1M0NE that everyone will adore.

I'm completely on-board with what Kendrick said:

"Again, the demonstrated result is that Electronic Arts has skills in marketing and promotion that are not matched by the quality or the originality of their product."

Two big thumbs DOWN to the company that single-handedly killed Ultima, System Shock, Wing Commander, etc. There was some quality "feature IP" that they flushed right down the toilet with their corporate BS. What makes anyone think that they're going to do any better this time around?

The implication is that an animated character is snuffed out for the impact it has on the viewing audience, sure, which bears some minute relevance, but, on the whole, knight37 is absolutely correct. By definition, a snuff film depicts a true death for the aforementioned reasons.

Actually, what is not said in this article is the fact that this motion capturing system was used in Fight Night Round 3, which is reknown in the way the faces react to punches or knockouts. Transferring this technology over into other games and have departments of EA work with one another is great.

I am seeing this more and more in the gaming industry and it is leading to beautiful things. Certainly, the facial technology will be above and beyond, as I have seen certain screenshots of this; such as when a soldier is hit by a bullet or when he is putting his face paint on - it's all there. The facial animations depicting real-life reactions...well, all I have to say it is quite incredible once you see it for yourself.

I am hoping someday, alongside this technology, we see clothing move in FPS's like in basketball titles, such as NBA 2K6.

Anyway, just want to throw in my 2 cents worth.
