Guitar Hero II interview, dude
"Do you OD and die at the end of the game?"That's undoubtedly the best question that the IGN guys ask the creators of Guitar Hero in their interview on the subject of the sequel to the first game which is due this fall. The answer is "Yes and No", so we're thinking that the sequel can judge you as a good or bad rockstar by how crap your timings are (ie. how drunk you are). So what else did they have to say regarding the features of Guitar Hero II?
- Ability to play separate lead, rhythm and bass tracks in multi-player, but single-player will still only let you play as a drugged up lead guitarist.
- No specific details on new songs apart from that there'll be 55 songs. They're still in licensing talks apparently.
- Guitar Hero II won't screw people over when it comes to peripherals. The old guitar will work just fine.
- People have mastered the original Guitar Hero on expert mode, as this video suggests. Don't be surprised if the sequel's more challenging.
[Thanks, Jake]

Dude...that guy's pretty damn good. I can't wait for the sequel...maybe they'll update the ol' SG some.
joefro @ Apr 17th 2006 2:26PM
i hope that they make a usb controller so i can use my ps3
A @ Apr 17th 2006 2:26PM
yeah... maybe just learn to play guitar?
Joe @ Apr 17th 2006 2:28PM
YES, Guitar/Bass Hero Multiplayer!
That video right there is a 5 star performance. AMAZING!
Thomas Crymes @ Apr 17th 2006 2:34PM
Expert difficulty is just fine, as the guy in that video is a rarity.
I only know one person who can get through the majority of Expert songs only by the skin of their teeth (3 stars and in the red) thanks largerly to star power.
What I would like to see if a multi-level difficulty in medium mode.
I enjoy playing with the four keys, but I want something more difficult. Don't make me progress to that five key nonsense!

Finally, there's a practice mode! That's the most important thing about the sequel.
I hate playing the same 3 minutes of boring riffs just to get to the impossible solo.
Tom @ Apr 17th 2006 3:00PM
I notice he takes his hand off the strum bar and starts pressing buttons randomly in the solo. That screams fake to me.
DT @ Apr 17th 2006 3:05PM
Man I can't wait! Everything my friends and I talked about seems to be in this game. Play bass in coop mode, check. AC/DC, hopefully check (at least they know we want it). Practice mode, check. This is going to be awesome.

"I hate playing the same 3 minutes of boring riffs just to get to the impossible solo."
Can't beat 'Bark at the Moon' either, huh? :)
For reference, GH1 has 47 songs, total. 30 for the main game, 17 that you can buy ingame.
Seperated lead/rhythm/bass parts for multiplayer is going to kick serious ass. I can't wait for this. GH1 multi is fun, don't get me wrong, but this will be far better.

How about a 720p mode so that I don't have to worry about the really minor video lag on my DLP set? =) Would that be so difficult for this kind of game? Didn't GT4 run in 1080i or something?
Jason @ Apr 17th 2006 4:09PM
isnt that the guy the same guy who put out fake videos? near the end hes not even strumming. in another video the fret keys just moved by itself...
Chris Maguire @ Apr 17th 2006 4:23PM
To those questioning the validity of the video -- two of the advanced techniques in guitar hero are "hammering-on" and "pulling-off". They are methods to sound notes without hitting the strum bar -- you can use them on any note that has a white circle.
On the particularly fast solos (like the one in the video), nearly all of the notes are hammer-on/pull-offs. Sometimes a single hand isn't fast enough to perform these techniques quickly, so using both hands to press the fret buttons is the best method for success.
Threadright @ Apr 17th 2006 4:33PM
Ya, I agree Chris, that technique he's using is a must in difficult guitar solos, and is entirely legit.

That video has been been the center of debate for awhile now on the official Guitar Hero forums. I believe the overall consensus is that it is real, and damn good.
Also, from the interview, it seems that they probably have gotten a Led Zeppelin song, an AC/DC song, etc.
AnimalTaglits @ Apr 17th 2006 6:56PM
Fastfoward it to 3:09 and he's not even pressing down the orange fret yet a note is still coming out.
Joe @ Apr 17th 2006 9:54PM
#3... guess what? I'm not getting it till Sunday... yet I've been learning to play since January.
I can play Smoke on the Water and Iron Man, and do power chords... but that's about it right now.
I want it horribly bad, though: I'm going right to Cochise when I put it in.
Tru @ Apr 17th 2006 10:18PM
That video is awesome! I can't wait for Guitar Hero II! As for the orange button problem in the video, I'm guessing he presses the button. It's probably the angle that is confusing people, combined with the frame rate and the fact that he is playing pretty fast. The game is worth the money and I hope GH2 comes in a similar package with the game and the controller so I can play 2 player!
vidGuy @ Apr 17th 2006 11:11PM
Guitar Hero is incredibly fun. I just bought it this weekend and I played the hell out of it. Now I have it back at university and all my friends love it.
Just for reference, we all play guiater. I've been playing for 6 years, my roomie for 2 years, and the other guys for between 4 and 8 years. This thing won't teach you guitar, but it is still a challenge for a real guitarist.
And for those that are wondering, RO will release a pack with a guitar and the game by itself, just like it is now. So, yeah, you'll be able to use the GH controller for GH2, or get the second pack so that you can have two controllers for both GH and its sequel!
Any idea when the set list comes out?
LessThanMrT @ Apr 18th 2006 12:06AM
this is one of the few reasons that I want a PS2
Ebineezer @ Apr 19th 2006 8:20PM
That video is amazing! I am definately not at that level yet.
