Give Windows a touch of Mega Man class

Sure, Windows users (used to) get all the games but until now there was one major advantage to Apple's Mac OS X operating system: Mike Zornek's Mega Man Effect. The legion of Windows users have waited long enough; Levi Wolfe has done the grunt work and ported the handy* little app over to the Windows platform for the rest of the computer-using world to enjoy.
*By "handy" we of course mean "of no discernible value." The program duplicates the music, parallax stars, and name banner shown before every boss battle in Mega Man by showing the same effect every time you launch an application. To be fair, sometimes those Excel spreadsheets are worse than Dr. Wily and company.
[Thanks, Sense]

Old.
In fact, that's very old. Isn't this a news-centric blog?
32_footsteps @ Apr 18th 2006 4:12PM
Well, it's specifically the boss intro from Mega Man 2, but that was the best one. I just want to know if there's a toggle to turn the stars into birds, like in the good old days.
C. Grant @ Apr 18th 2006 4:15PM
You're seriously making my head hurt Ryan. Not only are we not a "news-centric" blog (we're a video game blog FYI) but I would encourage you to reevaluate your definition of "old." The Windows port is less than a month old. Sorry we missed your tip when you sent it in... oh wait, you didn't.

Ryan - comments like that annoy the crap out of me.
Fanguad @ Apr 18th 2006 4:28PM
Sadly, it requires Administrator priviledges, so my work computer will be without MegaMan goodness. However, now that I know about the OSX version, it will be the first thing to go on my lappy when I get home. :)
k0sm0s @ Apr 18th 2006 4:31PM
that effect is cool, but having it occurred 5 times when I launched Warcraft 3 isn't very handy.
JRy @ Apr 18th 2006 4:40PM
Ha, negative stars for Ryan. Too funny.
I love me some Mega Man, bring it on!
dsub @ Apr 18th 2006 4:49PM
this is cool, but I wish there were a way to control exactly what programs it does it for. When I launch a game, like doom 3, or FEAR for instance, it launches the screen for the game at first, but then after that every single process that launches to run the game ends up getting it's own megaman screen as well. Then end result is you sitting and waiting for 5 mins while it goes through each and every process in the megaman screen, and then you can finally play.

First app oppened = Cool
2/3 app oppened = meh
4 apps oppened = Uninstall/Instaler's .exe deleted.

This is SOOOO old. I heard about this like at least 48 1/2 seconds before you posted it. You suck.
Panadero @ Apr 18th 2006 5:14PM
dsub: It seems that pressing a key during the sequence will stop it, so you don't have to wait through it all. It's still a little annoying that it runs for processes that launch from other processes like that, but at least there's a way to stop it quickly.
elle @ Apr 18th 2006 5:23PM
Digg buried this 3 weeks ago, but I still like it. Ditto on dsub, though, wish it was configurable.
Does it come with the source like Zornek's OS X version? I'm on a Mac at work and can't run/unpack the EXE.
Nithron @ Apr 18th 2006 5:26PM
...Now all we need is a Resident Evil door-opening animation version. Or wait, don't, that's a really bad idea.
Stu @ Apr 18th 2006 5:44PM
I tried it, but it pops up for everything, which is painful. Yes you can skip it, but damn it's just a hindrance. Everytime someone logs in to msn or messages you, it goes to the cutscene. It's brutal. It had some novely value but I uninstalled it pretty quick.
Jason C. @ Apr 18th 2006 5:53PM
That is old but F***ing awesome/hilarious
Ryan Williams @ Apr 18th 2006 6:22PM
I think that there needs to be some kind of red notice next to the comment submission button which says something along the lines of, Point out the old age of a blog item at your peril. Get it sorted, Chris. ;)
I, too, am getting increadingly fed-up with seeing such comments; this is a blog about stuff that's of interest to gamers just as much as it is about news, and quite why certain people feel obligated to point out that something may be a few months old is beyond me.
If I haven't seen it before, and it isn't something that isn't really time sensitive like the notification of a short-running competition or a release date would be, it isn't old from my perspective.

Every time I look at a diagram of a chloroplast, I think, "boy, that thing looks delicious" but they're too small to tase. maybe if I could shrink and taste one...
Ahms @ Apr 18th 2006 9:27PM
I've never heard of this before, and glad it's on here. Very cool
Clay @ Apr 18th 2006 11:24PM
I'm going to install this on all of the computers at school.
Best thing ever.
C. Grant @ Apr 19th 2006 8:44AM
Ryan Williams: That is a great idea! I'll look into it.
Monster @ Apr 19th 2006 10:23AM
"Old" on the Internet is anything that's been around longer than 30 seconds.

Ryan Williams: That is a great idea! I'll look into it.
