Cannabis, also known as
marijuana, is one of the most culturally-accepted illegal substance
in the United States. Despite its lack of legality, the wacky weed has been a part of pop culture and the source of a
number of movies, songs, television shows (most recently a TV
series on Showtime), and has been ingrained in the history of our pop culture. While we do not advocate the use of
marijuana (nor are we suggesting that any Joystiq writers actually participate in such illegal activity), Games.net has posted an interesting video highlighting what they consider are the
"Top 10 Games to Play When You're Stoned." We have a few beefs with the list, but we will discuss that in a
moment.
The list, for those who are too impatient to watch a 4-minute video:
Rez
Katamari Damacy
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Beyond Good & Evil
Lumines
Sly Cooper & the Thievius
Raccoonus
Viewtiful Joe
SSX Tricky
Fantavision
Parappa the Rapper
The list is pretty concise, and we definitely
agree with its number 1 choice (Rez was featured on our list of the Top 10 Hidden Gems of this
generation -- and, in retrospect, probably should have scored higher). In fact, anything by Tetsuya Mizuguchi is worthy
of the list. Any game that makes the list should be bright and colorful with simplistic gameplay. It is with that in
mind that we nix the colorful -- yet a tad too difficult to pick up and play -- Viewtiful Joe. Beyond Good
& Evil is an amazing game, no doubt, but its story is too good to miss out on (and sides, we can think of
better games to put in its place). Lumines, although from the mind of Mizuguchi, will probably strain the eyes
too much since you cannot play it on a normal television. Thus, we present to you our revised list:
Rez
Katamari Damacy
Super Smash Bros. Melee
Geometry Wars
Psychonauts
Any Mario Party
Sly
Cooper & the Thievius Racoonus
Fantavision
Parappa the Rapper
Any Mario Kart
We have to hand it to Nintendo, they really know how to make a game that is
anyone -- under most any condition -- can pick up and play. Geometry Wars is pretty challenging, but anyone
can comprehend pressing two joysticks, and the game is wickedly beautiful and colorful. Anything we forgot?
.23 Please don't call me ignorant. I've worked with the salvation army most weekends for the last five years and have seen the effects of prolonged abuse of every drug you would care to mention.
Also note that in my original post I did say "abuse", and not just casual use of a drug, which I will happily agree can have a calming and for many beneficial relaxing effect.
Dude, Beyond Good & Evil is DEFINITELY a stoner game. The gorgeous environments, wild characters, great easy gameplay, and so forth. I played it plenty of times while stonededed and it's a blast.
Nobody has said Guitar Hero yet? I mean, sure, it takes some getting used to because all your timings are slower, but once you get it going, being high just adds to the realism of the game.
1) Rainbow Island 2) Silent Hill 2 3) Super Smash Bros Melee, with the item drop rate turned up to maximum with only hammers 4) Dr. Mario 5) Gradius 6) Guns and Roses pinball machine 7) Altered Beast 8) Zombies Ate My Neighbors 9) Revolution X 10) Super Contra (arcade version)
I'm sure another game really great for stoners is Marble Blast Ultra. I mean, half the guys I played against on Live were stoned while playing... and I'm sure they loved those colorful balls doing super jumps and all...
actually, and I hesitate to say this, but the highest score (pun surely intended) I got on Geometry Wars was achieved under the influence of mescaline. 500k +. Relative to the insane scores in the multiple millions that certain people get, this seems like small potatoes, but considering all i'd gotten up to that point was 250,000, i'd say it was a coup.
I would also like to add to the list Hexic. simple, epic with bright colors. seems fitting.
And I agree... where are Tempest 2000 (Jag version in my books) and N20!!?? Especially the bonus stage in N2O... Whooooaaah!
Nothing like a good night out kicking to some good high energy dance with a tribe of mates then piling back home to "wind down" with Rez though.
Good memories of seeing The Prodigy live just recently in a gang and after it going off to a mates house to play Rez on his Dreamcast connected to a 150" Projector screen and "Meat" sound system.
Of course, I live in Copenhagen (Im English though). Not quite as relaxed as Amsterdam, but we got Christiania. If you know that place then nuff said.
People here are generally more relaxed about using Green. Its a social thing for me with friends. Never something alone. Very seldom done too. No offence to any of you guys going on about "Abuse" but really not all people that smoke a bit of woo hoo are addicts.
BTW has anyone tried the Trance Vibrator with Rez? With a Girl present of course, let her hold it.
I'm totally with baR_n1, Spiderman 2 is awesome when you're high. Haven't tried it yet (weed and gamecube haven't crossed paths since I bought the game) but Ultimate Spiderman would probably be good too.
Of course, some parts of games really need a spliff on the go to be appreciated - the sailing sections in Wind Waker, for instance.
Speaking of Mario Kart, was playing it with some friends while blazing and decided that rather than sit out my go I'd rest the controller on my knee, play with one hand and smoke with the other. To my, and everyone else's, surprise I absolutely ruled the track, 'twas one of my finest moments.
I've palyed the top three games while stoned (the Dreamcast version of Rez tho) and I never really noticed much difference. Not to gloat, but I am so good at those games that I could be having a stroke and still play well. I just get focused and keep on playing.
With that said, playing those games while high is fun. Shooting beer cans with cheapo Wal-Mart BB rifles with your stoned/drunk friends is also fun. Eating a dozen Crystal sandwiches while stoned is the most fun.
N2O Nitrous Oxide (w/soundtrack by Crystal Method)
N2O should be on this list, I played the hell out of that game way back when .... way high the the toke and occasionally whilst yumming up on the shrooms.
My opinion: You could be tripped out on 5 hits of acid and Fantavision would still suck.
Here's my list: 1. Any Wario Ware, specifically Mega Party Games 2. Rez (haven't played it, but I just have to assume!) 3. We Love Katamari (the original will do) 4. DDR / In The Groove 5. Frequency / Amplitude 6. Mario Golf (very chillin') 7. Lumines / Meteos 8. Super Smash Bros Melee 9. Any Mario Party (more of a drinking game though) 10. Pong (Playstation)
Well a few of my favorites have been missed completely here....
Leisure Suit Larry Conker (come on... he's a drunk squirrel)
this one might take some digging, but go search for an old arcade rom called Tube Panic. this thing is just made to twist your brain.. going down a long narrow tunnel really fast, and when you steer the tunnel spins around....
Don't think anyone has touched on a bunch of my favourites; Road Rash, Goldeneye, Jet Set/Grind Radio, Rush, older Burnouts (the new ones are way too fast), and Worms Armaggedon. But, we shouldn't ignore the fact that no one will likely agree on a top ten, because a lot of people who smoke think that it enhances pretty much any activity, and likely any game too...
