Let’s get this straight: “Hispanic” is not a race, an ethnicity, nor even a culture. It is a generic term used to describe the diaspora that emerged out of the Spanish conquest of Latin America, as well as the Spaniards themselves; it cannot properly be described as a "race" because Spaniards are of European descent, whereas most people of Latin America are an admixture of indigenous and Spanish descent or a mix of Spanish and African descent. The term “Hispanic” is not exactly an ethnicity either, because while it is true that these people share Spanish ancestry and language and perhaps some elements of Spanish culture and customs, they do not all share the same cultural features – they eat different foods, have different types of music, different lifestyles, etc. The lifestyles and customs of Mexico and Puerto Rico are very different; even the Spanish spoken by them is not the same. It is about as accurate to claim that the “Hispanic” people are all of one ethnicity because they share a common language and heritage as it is to say that Anglo-Americans, non-French Canadians, Australians, and the English are the same ethnicity because they all share a common language and (Anglo) heritage. “Latin American/Latino” refers to people of Mexico, Central and South America, and the islands of the Caribbean, but because it excludes Spaniards and includes Brazilians and people from other South American countries once occupied by Europeans nations other than Spain, the term is not interchangeable with “Hispanic,” and also does not describe a race/ethnicity/culture. The truth is that neither of the terms is really accurate, but they are used as a convenient means to generalize about a broad group of nations and people, all with distinct cultures, national identities, and customs. The bottom line is that a Mexican is not the same as a Puerto Rican, or a Peruvian, or a Columbian – no more than an “American” is the same as a Canadian, or people from Germany the same as those from England who are of Saxon derivation.

To the person in post # 5: this nation was founded by people who broke laws, and then expanded through the rule of lawlessness. The colonists who initiated the Revolutionary War were considered treasonous by their governing body at the time, i.e., the British Crown. The Boston Tea Party was an act of extreme sedition, punishable by death - but none of you would be here today if it had not occurred. When the colonists and early Americans began to push westward, they initiated hostilities against many tribes who were peaceful people, out of greed for land and resources, prejudice against indigenous peoples and cultures, and a sense of moral superiority over the "heathens"; when the natives fought back, they were engaged in a struggle for survival against a ruthless people who had drawn first blood. The European/Americans raped, tortured, and killed Native Americans, including babies and children. They employed a form of germ warfare to exterminate tribes by intentionally infecting them with smallpox through the trade of contaminated blankets. They killed thousands of people, and permanently erased entire cultures and tribes from existence. Today these actions would be termed genocide, and would be punishable as crimes against humanity - in other words, they were lawless actions. The truth is that in a sense, the European invaders were illegal immigrants themselves - the only reason history does not portray them as such is because they were victorious in their conquest. If the outcome had been otherwise, today's history books would record a very different version of the story.

To the person in post # 23: telling people of indigenous ancestry to get over their conquest and subsequent loss of land and rights is like telling the families of Sept. 11 victims to get over the violent deaths of their loved ones. Conquest leaves an indelible mark in history that permanently alters the playing field and usually renders the conquered people powerless, humiliated, and often desperate and destitute. If you don't get what I mean, go up to the Pine Ridge reservation and witness the abject poverty and the racist treatment that the Lakota are subjected to even today – and then remember that their ancestors were living in this land long before yours were, and that what they had was taken from them by force, often through horrific means. These people can never “get over it” because they are still leading lives of extreme deprivation as a result of true injustice and human cruelty that continues today, and is perpetrated by our government and fellow citizens. It’s a reality you may not like, but that does not make it any less real.

Poster # 44 is absolutely correct in stating, "Gaining territory militarily is stealing." I'm sure many of you would quickly come around to realize the truth of this statement if the French were to invade this nation tomorrow and take over the land through conquest. The whole point of conquest is to gain access and control, by force, of another nation's resources without having to pay for it. If this does not constitute theft on a grand scale, then I don’t know what does.

I’d really like to know: among those that believe it is acceptable to shoot and kill illegal immigrants, whether in video games or real life, because you’re pissed off about them crossing borders to get into “your” country, how many of you are of Native American – whether north or south of the border – descent? I have news for those of you who are not: your claim to this land is no more legitimate – and perhaps much less so – than those of the border-crossing mestizos whose indigenous blood flows in their veins even today. The truth is that many Americans of European descent share in their ancestry a heritage of lawlessness - most of you are no different than the people you vilify and condemn because of your ignorance and bigotry.

And yes, a game that promotes killing people, all of a specific nationality, and portrays their women only as "breeders," and their men as either "drug dealers" or "nationals" dressed as caricatures of Mexicans in ponchos and sombreros is not "stereotyping"; it is racist. The use of the term "wetbacks" to describe them is proof of the true intent of the game. Those of you who argue otherwise are either completely naive or are yourselves bigots.

Would this game exist had the US systematically enforced its laws against illegal immigration? It is a criminal offense to cross the border other than at authorized points of entry. See 8 United States Code Sec. 1325. Rather than an expression of racism, the game is an expression of the frustration US citizens feel at their federal government's abject failure to perform the constitutionally mandated duty to provide each state with border security.

OmG-can the retarded be counted as a race??? The immigration controversy is all POLITICS, and for those that can't handle the distraction du jour, try therapy for your emotional fragility. Dr. Phil surely must be in Spanish by now. Mr. Navarette's decision to take action against the game illustrates that he is confused about his race. He's Retarded, not Hispanic. His delusion that Hispanics are entitled to compensation might have been fostered when he took advantage of those complimentary ESL services he got in school, but the ESL boat must have detoured at the arrival of his Political Science class. Someone needs to educate the man on how to exercise his political rights. Turn off the telenovellas and write a letter to your congressman for gosh sakes.
