I've always said that a new version of NiGHTS would make me buy any console immediately.

If this transpires, I'll be camping out to buy my Rev.

*YAWN*

I fail to see what is so "great" about this game.

...and yes I've played it. (I own a Saturn, NiGHTS, the Christmas edition and the 3D Controller with the crappy analog stick.)

Hm, I wonder if he does remake it, if he'll replace all the rings with walkie-talkies.

Also, am I the only person ever who just does not see the appeal for this game?

NiGHTS-time is over.

There was one specific moment in time when this game could be made and that was the onset of 3D.

Think about it rationally. All you did was fly around the world and explore. It was nice to have the freedom, where before all we had was 2D, and that's what made it a great game to most people. If you re-make it, you have two possible outcomes:

1) They change nothing. You realize that gaming has passed this style of game by, and that flight and exploration of 3D is now a standard function of most games, and is not suitable to BE an entire game anymore. Even with the Revolution controller, the novelty quickly fades. It dies.

2) They change everything. It becomd something akin to Sonic with flight...and possibly guns. It is NiGHTS in no way except in name. Everybody hates it. It dies.

If someone smart at Sega were in charge, they either re-release this as part of the Revolution "Ancestry" package, or they use NiGHTS as a tutorial for how to explore a worls that is very reliant on on the Revolution's controller. In that way the property is honored, but not disgraced by trying to pimp the property out, slap some makeup, on it, and call it a new game. (Of course, these days, it seems that's all Sega's interested in.)

I know tons of NiGHTS fans. Not a one of them wants to see the game remade after they take a look at the likelihood of what they would get.

I'm with Yuji Naka on this one. No sequel. Retire the game.

"Like the way Spielberg likes E.T. so much he won't remake it, I don't want to make another NiGHTS."

And then he remade it anyway?
But, then again, Spielberg did screw it up when he went back.

I just bought a Saturn and Nights and I have to agree that its time has passed. I think a sequel could be awesome but a re-release of the original game may not be the best idea.

Alkaiser, I don't understand your comment. Are you saying that NiGHTS is outdated because it is played predominately on a 2-D plane, or because "all you do is explore"?

On the first point, I'm sure they'll include a degree of 3D gimmickry but even notwithstanding that, it will look and sound gorgeous on nextgen hardware. What is more, I would argue that in today's world of stagnant 3D platformers etc., a return to 2D gameplay is even more daring. About 10% (if that) of 3D games are worth their salt; who is to say that there isn't room for NiGHTS? Besides, 2D worked for Viewtiful Joe.

On the second point, if you think that "all you do" in NiGHTS is explore, you've evidently never played (or perhaps understood) the game . Yes, initially the vibrant colours and worlds were what interested you but it was ultimately the score/link attack that kept you playing. NiGHTS, Sega Rally and Virtua Fighter 2 dominated my gameplaying in the mid-late nineties and none of them had much depth, per se. Imagine online competitive score attacks, or perhaps a simultaneous online competitive mode (which would need to be better than NiGHTS' admittedly poor 2 player mode). It could be like Geometry Wars on 360 - simple but effective. Plus it meets the Nintendo doctrine of gaming for everyone - this could be played with the controller and one button but still allow room for amazing amounts of skill (William Curly, was that his name - the kid who was top of every leaderboard for scores/links?)

Ultimately, even if NiGHTS Revolution were just a niche title, it could be a worthwhile one. I'd settle for a remake of the original but imagine a new 14 level sequel with all the graphical bells and whistles, a new A-life system that allows you to trade/evolve Nightopians online and a comprehensive online scoring system. I'd be all over that like a rash.

Bottom line, I'd take a new NiGHTS over GTA 4 any day of the week.

Remaking a movie and re-releasing an old movie with updated visuals and modifications aren't the same thing.

"Think about it rationally. All you did was fly around the world and explore. It was nice to have the freedom, where before all we had was 2D, and that's what made it a great game to most people."

Umm...it was more along the line of flying around on rails. Now if you are going to talk about a game where you could explore with freedom then that would be Super Mario 64. Sure the worlds weren't as big as they are now but at the time they were massive.

"Are you saying that NiGHTS is outdated because it is played predominately on a 2-D plane, or because "all you do is explore"?"

Both.

The phenomena you're referring to is also the same type of thing where people get REAAAAALLLY into DDR or Beatmania and other people play a couple of times casually. That wasn't the main reason most people liked the game. It was the main reason the most hardcore fans of the game liked the game, and these things are HUGE differences.

All that stuff you want in the game would be perfectly fine as part of a download of the original version, a la, as you suggested, Geometry Wars. That way all the small minority who really enjoyed playing the game can get some new maps, battle it out online, and Sega won't have to take the financial plunge on re-doing/re-developing the game for next-gen, and the game won't lose any of the esteem it had built up. Sell this for $3-$5 and you'll even pull in new fans.

You try and make this a new game, and it's going to fall flat on its ass for the reasons I've already pointed out. If the hardcore fanbase was all you had to appeal to in order to be financially successful, Sega would still be making consoles. You can't have a game consist entirely of time attacks and exploration these days.

Whose to say a new NiGHTS would be EXACTLY like the original?

Why is it so hard to fathom that they could take the concept of NiGHTS, and adopt it into something new? The Revolution's controller is meant to be a fully-3D controller (it senses moving up, left, down, right, forward, and backward), so for example, they could make the flying parts truly 3D?

Granted, I, too, don't have much hope for anything coming from SONICTEAM since Sonic Adventure... But if Naka really loves NiGHTS as much as he says he does (sheesh, he makes a cameo in nearly every game since!), then he would make sure this game would be nothing short of perfect before it went gold.

Ok, I don't think I really disagree with you on the price; I'd pay $50 for it but it'd certainly be better received at $30 or less. And the point about Sega is a very well made one; their failure to add any extra modes to arcade conversions was frustrating through at least 2 generations of consoles.

That said, what I'd like to see happen with the Revolution, and NiGHTS really embodies this theme, is for more games to pick one concept and execute it very well. Too many games are going the GTA way of being jack of all trades, master of none.

One last thing:

"You can't have a game consist entirely of time attacks and exploration these days."

Shadow of the Colossus, anybody?

I was about to go crazy hype machine on this one, but I think I agree with Alkaiser. NIGHTS was awesome because it was new: new gameplay, new controller, new everything. There are very few games that were revolutionary and have yet to be eclipsed (I'll still argue that Mario 64 has not been overtaken in platformer greatness). NIGHTS is not one of them. The 2.5D gameplay was all the rage for a while, and now it's over.

Even when SEGA was announced to having their games being included in the virtual console library, I was just only thinking about Genesis games and not even Saturn games. I would wet myself with glee to see NiGHTS as a virtual console download. But a new game, that would be more than perfect. I totally imagine playing NiGHTS with the revmote :D

If sega wanted to revive a classic game for the Rev, then I would rather see Kenseiden and Zillion for the Virtual Console and Panzer Dragoon remade for the RevMote.
Sonic team is one of the biggest disappointments in this era. Nintendo showed us what 3D can be with Mario64. Sonic Team has been trying to recreate that success for almost 10 years. Now the sonic series is a joke with a trail of mediocre titles and busted gameplay.
Do we really want Sonic Team to develop another Nights?

As striderhayasa said before me, Sonic Team is a joke. Wait, thats not the point of this, the point is, Sega can reclaim their title of "most innovative designer" again with the sexy piece of tech called the Revolution. Think about Rez! Panzer Dragoon! Chu Chu Rocket! SAMBA DE AMIGO! Though of course, a Yoshi game made my Nintendo would be just as good.

NiGHTS on revolution would argubly do for the revo what goldeneye did for the 64, aside from both kicking loads of ass. In the upcoming console wars, on the advent of what I would say is about 6 months too soon of the next generation (for all the consoles), it would be interesting to see Sega team up more with Nintendo; it would make the most sense from a financial perspective, I couldn't imagine how much Sega could rake in (in terms of fanbase) from touching up their classics for the Virtual Console alone, and depending how the VC price thing/system of buying or renting goes, could argubly be lucrative.

keep your friends close and your enemies closer, or what the boss(mgs3) said: "today's enemy could be tommarow's ally." Sega and Nintendo would quite a team I would think, assuming of course Sega get's it ac together and stop milking sonic with crappy games (the racing ones) or big letdowns (shadow the hedgehog).

That would be cool if they made a sequel. I still think it's a little weird to take a last gen game and remake it for the next generation console. After it didn't come up again in the current generation I just didn't think anyone was interested.

Whether or not NiGHTS offers "anything new" nowadays is not really a strong nor a valid argument, I think. Nothing out there really offers anything new, not even the bizarre custom peripheral titles (Guitar Hero, Donkey Konga) -- everything seems to have it's roots based within that which is established. As an 'innovative' title, NiGHTS would be lost within a sea of similar voices.

That's not the point, anyhow.

When interviewed about NiGHTS during it's development and conception, Yuji Naka would attempt to change the subject when asked about the engine or the technology. Far from pushing boundaries, the "something new" that NiGHTS _did_ offer wasn't gameplay based (Itself being a hybrid of Ecco the Dolphin's swimming; but flying; and Sonic's collect 'em up submechanic, married with a combo scoring mechanic that since has become a gaming staple itself), but of the experience of flying, of dreaming. Indeed, much was made of research into the narratological elements of the title to give it an identity all it's own in the sense that as well as playing like no other, it looked and sounded like no other title.

I think the Revolution _needs_ NiGHTS. Not because it offers anything new, but because it offers something different ffrom the majority; a breath of fresh air from the multitude of titles around today, and a fresh console could benefit from as many distinctly different experiences - especially for virgin gamers - as is possible,
