Joystiq poll: Waiting for E3
With less than three weeks to go until E3 2006, what are you looking forward to? Many are calling this the most
exciting expo in years, and Joystiq will be there with all the gaming goodness we can find.Technical mumbo jumbo: this is not a scientific or rigorous poll and is only intended to capture the general consensus of Joystiq readers. Results will be posted approximately one week after the poll is opened for votes. Sure, you probably could hack this poll if you worked at it, but it’s more fun for everyone if poll results accurately reflect the opinions of all readers, so please refrain from tampering with poll results.

I don't really are about consoles, specifically, but anything that Kojima and suda put out has my full attention.
Sloopydrew @ Apr 21st 2006 9:36AM
Nintendo has a lock on this one. Sony and MS would have to announce that all games will be free from this point out, to beat out Nintendo. Interest in the controller and the interface the big N keeps going on about is too great. That said, some PLAYABLE PS3 games would go a long way toward keeping Sony in the game.
Sloopydrew @ Apr 21st 2006 9:37AM
"From this point ON" not "from this point out." D'oh! I can't type this morning, for some reason.
JimmyHACK @ Apr 21st 2006 9:39AM
Looking forward to Nintendo And Sony together the most...
MS will have some good fun playables though too
JimmyHACK @ Apr 21st 2006 9:40AM
Adding, reason nintendo's will be so big is that we are still in complete dark...
as to where others have shown etc...
So ya nintentdo can easily steal the show
soco @ Apr 21st 2006 9:42AM
i'm just most excited about the surprise announcements, and i don't care from which sides they come on. i can't really say i'm more excited about Nintendo or Microsoft.
i have to say i'm most focused on Sony though, just because we still know so little about what's going on there (focused, not excited). we've seen so much hype and so little content, and this really the last major show until the release, unless they do some of those MS like events. they've also got the most to lose this time, so i think they're going to pull out all the stops.
Ben @ Apr 21st 2006 9:47AM
Nintendo all the way. I can't wait to find out the enxt secret about the Revo, and finally get to see some games. Sony should be good too...
That being said, there's nothing Microsoft can do to get attention other than shown some really good games.
TxdoHawk @ Apr 21st 2006 9:50AM
I think the only people on the losing end of E3 this year are anyone who doesn't take a close look at what all three systems are bringing to the table. This is the big one, no doubt, and everyone knows it, the companies included.
We already know we'll see plenty from Nintendo, but the 360 is already out and the next wave of big games are well into development...I think Microsoft's console will probably turn heads with a few suprises. The PS3? Hard to tell at this point, but I don't think Sony would go into an E3 like this without at least one big gun to flaunt.
Aaron @ Apr 21st 2006 9:50AM
wow... GO NIINTENDO
jay @ Apr 21st 2006 9:54AM
The press will be all over Nintendo this year. I mean, Twilight Princess has even the most cynical of gamers watching. Of course it's all helped by the Revolution's secrecy. Nintendo played this VERY smart. Not only do they get 2 E3's worth of attention but the internet is hyping this machine. It's really a genius effort. I suppose running 2 of the worlds most successful handhelds helps too.
Regula Oblique @ Apr 21st 2006 10:02AM
As the majority I think this is pretty much Nintendo's E3, but im also a sony fan so im looking forward to those annoucements too.
But this is going to be big for Nintendo, I havent really enjoyed a console from them since snes, and this could mean their takeover again on the industry.
Neko Tsukimi @ Apr 21st 2006 10:14AM
Seriously, I am just mad excited about this years E3. I really don't know if it's because of the Revolution, or because I finally have a computer again. The last two E3s (even the one revealing the DS) didn't really get me riled up. For 2004, I first saw the DS when I got my copy of Nintendo Power in the mail the same day it was revealed. For 2005, I just happened to be at a computer where I could view Iwata's keynote shortly before the Rev and the micro were revealed. It's good to have a computer again ;_;
Marc @ Apr 21st 2006 10:18AM
O.K., all in all, I love Nintendo, but is Joystiq being a little bit "for" Nintendo? I don't wanna cause any problems, but most news on this site is pro-Nintendo. I would just like to see a little more news on the compettition ya know?
(my post has nothing to do with the # of votes Nintendo has)
jay @ Apr 21st 2006 10:22AM
Marc; maybe because this is a games site and Nintendo are the only competitors to be strictly for games?
... ^ What a strange thing to say
Fielin @ Apr 21st 2006 10:27AM
Well, Marc, I think that it just has to do with the amount of news they get.
Nintendo is being very clever, letting new screenshot, and new information escape once in a while. Whereas Sony is still trying to keep everythin secret.
Joystiq cannot talk about things that don't get told.
About the poll, I am of course more excited about Nintendo. I already have a 360, and expect the PS3 to be more of the same. Different brand, different hardware, but same kind of games.
These two entertainment systems bring better graphics, better online services, but nothing really new.
The Nintendo Revolution has the potential to bring something fresh an new. We all hope fr the better, and fear the worst... Thus the excitement : we want to see if the Revolution is worthy of our attention, or if it's a waste of time.
Jeff @ Apr 21st 2006 10:32AM
"I don't wanna cause any problems, but most news on this site is pro-Nintendo."
Hadn't you noticed? Most news on every game site is pro-Nintendo.
Not that there's anything wrong with that, as there are some obvious reasons why. But I used to work for a small gaming web site (now defunct) and I've attended plenty of Sony, MS, Nintendo and Sega press events. The Sega and Nintendo events always got the gaming media excited, because these are the real gaming companies. They always seem like they "get" what gaming's about (well, just Nintendo now, obviously), even if they're not doing well in the market. Sony and MS are a lot different; Sony's press events are dry, corporate affairs, and MS just tries way too hard to seem cooler than they are. They're like a four-eyed high school nerd that's trying to be all hip-hop.
Nintendo knows how to get a crowd behind them. You leave one of their events and it's like "how could they *not* win?" Then it's almost shocking when you see the sales numbers, and disappointing as hell when all their games get delayed. (Not so much with the DS, but I'm talking home consoles.)
Anyway, long story short, but the media - and the people that read sites like this - have always been a lot more pro-Nintendo than the public at large. I don't take the level of interest shown for the Revolution here or anywhere else on the net as indicative of anything. Nintendo appeals to the hardcore audience that grew up with them and that grew up with gaming. It still remains to be seen if they're going to expand that base with the Revolution.
(I hope they do, but I'm not yet fully convinced - I've been burned by them before.)
J B Cougar @ Apr 21st 2006 10:58AM
I'm not saying that this is the case, but maybe the reason Nintendo gets so much press is that they're the ones doing everything right this time around? People cry fanboy this and fanboy that when Sony and MS don't get as much play, but sometimes it's a lot more simple than crying "Joystiq conspiracy theory!!!" Sometimes the simplest explanation is the right one. In this case, E3 is Nintendo's to lose. They are the onyl company offering somethign completely new. If you think about it, 360 has kind of stolen PS3's thunder because it has dibs on the "same controller, better graphics, better online experience" category. All I'm hearing from Sony these days is how much lighter my wallet is going to be should I chose to buy their mini supercomputer (which I'm not). Oh, and they don't have a controller yet.
Pixelantes Anonymous @ Apr 21st 2006 10:59AM
Nintendo and Sony are the only ones that will have anything really new to say at E3. Sony will be unlikely to reveal anything, or even feature PS3 in any reasonable way, so I'm voting for Nintendo.
Marc @ Apr 21st 2006 11:02AM

benjamin @ Apr 21st 2006 11:10AM
How could anyone not be excited about Nintendo right now? There have been very few innovations in video games since the home console began that have had the potential that the Revolution has. The new controller is as exciting as the invention of the analog stick, the move to 3-D, or the inception of online play.
As far as anyone thinking that Joystiq is biased towards Nintendo, this is only a reflection of the excitement that Nintendo is generating. It's impossible to write about Sony or Microsoft with the same enthusiasm because they just aren't doing anything as innovative as Nintendo.
Bias would be to write an article singing Sony's praises and embelishing their unimaginative products while Nintendo acts as the creative force in the industry.
It's not that Joystiq is necessarily "for Nintendo" it's just that Nintendo provides the fodder for report. It isn't the author's fault that the "competition" simply isn't doing anything news worthy.

I voted maybe 20 minutes ago for Nintendo and got the 1000th vote. Checks back now and Nintendo is at 1561! So yeah people are hyped about the Revolution.
I really want to see how Sony is going to compete with the 360 even with the supposed new moves Microsoft is going to pull with HD-DVD drives...
And what I'm looking forward to mostly is how everything is going to be priced. With everything going else going up huge in price like gas, pricepoint will be a giant influence moreso than ever.
Jose @ Apr 21st 2006 11:32AM
Eh, I'm not looking forward to Nintendo's speakers at all. I already know I want the Revolution, so just put it on the market already, okay?
What I need to know is what Sony is doing to make me want to spend so much money on an entertainment machine. I'm looking forward to Sony's more than Nintendo's presentation because it's make or break for Sony, and I need to know either way.
X_Arre @ Apr 21st 2006 11:37AM

tLoZ:TP is still a GAMECUBE title. It is just going to have Revolution functionality because you can play it on the Rev. I don't even know if the Revo functionality was even confirmed, last time I checked, the whole thing was speculation.

anybody remember the posts on penny-arcade a while back? where companies hired people to infiltrate blogs and forums and hype product after they receive respect?
And just as someone mentioned up above, "the internet is hyping nintendo..."
I read some of these comments and almost start to wonder...
Anyway. I wanna see games! I dont care about what hardware they are on, I just want to see how my old favorites are progressing and any new games that i can look forward to!

The more you read stuff from the Blue Ocean Book(http://www.blueoceanstrategy.com/pages/book.htm ) like:
Blue Ocean Companies have fans rather then customers.
and
Stop benchmarking the competition. The more you benchmark your competition, the more you look like them.
The more it just screams "Nintendo" and how this E3 will show Nintendo's Blue Ocean...
Andy Witmyer @ Apr 21st 2006 11:56AM
Nintendo has clawed its way back to the top this year -- I believe that they're going to not only steal the show at E3, but they're going to steal sales from Sony and Microsoft! And the way things are looking, Nintendo just might have the best launch line-up EVER conceived. New games, old-but-well-loved-franchises, internet right out of the box and a virtual console. It's beautiful.
And let's not forget the Nintendo DS, which will have some mini-tons of it's own! This is the Year of Nintendo!
PongX @ Apr 21st 2006 12:11PM
I'm super stoked about Super Smash Brothers: Slapfight. I can't wait to bitchslap donkey kong into next week with the revmote.
In all seriousness, I'm most stoked about "release dates" at this point. Yeah, it's sad, but all I really care about is when I can actually get my hands on the DS Lite and the Revolution. The rest is just filler until I actually get to PLAY the games.
zero2dash @ Apr 21st 2006 12:12PM
Wow, that's REALLY asinine.
Joystiq posts a frickin' POLL with options for EVERY GAME COMPANY (including "Other" so the few people who still think Infinium Labs is alive can vote) and automatically Joystiq is pro- whatever the company in 1st place in the poll is?
You people need to get out once in awhile. And go get your head examined when you finally do.
Jouten Za @ Apr 21st 2006 12:17PM
I think Nintendo is the 'Showstoppa' on this one. Although I am also interested in what MS has to offer as well. Sony? Well, I would like to think they would bring something awesome to the show as well, but we all know that Sony has been nothing but full of bull malarkey.
chazz06@hotmail.com @ Apr 21st 2006 12:28PM
I know a lot of people are not surprised that nintendo was on top of the poll...but I am. Only because nintey has been written off for so many years and sony has had the gaming console market under it's belt for so long. I figure sony would still be the most anticipated company at E3. However, Nintendo has thrown the best curve ball of all of the systems, which is generating the most buzz. I am glad that people seem more interested in how playing a game like never before is more important than seeing a level of detail like never before, but with the same control. I have to give props to Nintendo for making video games "new" again.
Titanfan694 @ Apr 21st 2006 12:41PM
I am in no way a Fanboy for any one system but dont you think the name of this site should be NintendoFanboyBlog.com?
GlitchCog @ Apr 21st 2006 12:45PM
glitched,
If any company were to post on blogs to try to generate hype, it wouldn't be NOA. What would the point be? Even if there were a couple NOA posts on here, that's out of the 30 other so far that are saying the same thing. The companies who post the fake excitement are the ones who aren't getting any real excitement.
As a company, Sony's the one with the most questionable marketing practices, but they're usually aimed at the "urban nomads" and involve spray paint. Here's an example of Sony messing with the press: http://blogs.orlandosentinel.com/entertainment_movies_blog/2006/04/the_movie_sony_.html
Marlor @ Apr 21st 2006 12:47PM
Titanfan694: Nintendo have been doing interesting, exciting things lately, so they deserve the attention. But if their big announcement at E3 turns out to be lame, or if the Rev ends up a disappointment, then you can be sure that the gaming community will absolutely hammer them.
shivr @ Apr 21st 2006 12:57PM
being a nintendo fangirl, yeah, GO NINTENDO.
they're all I look out for at every year's E3 anyway >_>
I'm surpised the poll is so skewed though, it seemed the vibe was pretty negative/neutral for ninty back when revo was introduced, and even after the controller was unveiled. Strange...
chedabob @ Apr 21st 2006 1:02PM
hmm...surprisingly the sony fanboys arent out in full force today.
Scott @ Apr 21st 2006 1:16PM
Now do another poll titled, "What company's presence at E3 are you most anticipating?"
I guarantee nearly all the Microsoft voters and many of the Nintendo voters will vote for Sony. To be clear, I'm not saying there are lots of closet Sony fans, just that whether you're a Sony hater, fan, competitor, whatever, you want to see how the PS3 will have an effect on the console market.
The constant flamewars that destroy the comments to pretty much every PS3/360 post on this website confirm that most everybody who visits this site is very interested in what is going on with the PS3.
VF @ Apr 21st 2006 1:28PM
The poll is who are you most excited for, not who are you going to support with your money. Nintendo has people pro-Nintendo and con-Nintendo interested because they want to see what the Revolution is all about. Either to praise it or to pan it.
Jonn @ Apr 21st 2006 1:29PM

"If any company were to post on blogs to try to generate hype, it wouldn't be NOA. What would the point be? No, they're both. Because if you want to know a big secret, EVERY company does this.
It would surprise me if 25% or even more of the comments you see on a site like Joystiq aren't from either paid outsourced marketers or internal marketing departments. There's no way to prove or disprove it either way, but in all honesty, every company I've worked for in the last ten years has done it. Not just comments either, but story submissions too on certain sites (Slashdot, Fark, etc.).
Some companies are better and more persistent at it than others. It is possible that Nintendo takes it pretty seriously - they have always put a lot of stock in their "street teams" and other forms of viral marketing, so it's definitely possible and maybe even probable that they're seeding the comments here. But so are Sony and MS, I'm sure. The whole "fanboy" phenomenom I'm convinced is basically artificial - which doesn't mean real fanboys don't exist, but there always has to be somebody who starts it, and makes it seem cool to like one thing and uncool to like another. Sure, some of it's human nature, but who gets so wrapped up in defending a *product* that they haven't even seen or used yet? There has to be some sort of artificial community built up around something like that to create that sort of emotional reaction.
I know a lot of gamers and I don't personally know anyone that sits around boards and blogs calling people lamerz because they like a different console. I'm sure a number of those people do exist, but there's no doubt in my mind (because I've been a part of it) that a large percentage of them - and the most vocal among them - are being paid to do it. All it takes is a team of around 20-30 people with 4-5 online aliases each, getting paid a buck a post.
taddpoll @ Apr 21st 2006 1:43PM
whats wrong with offering a poll? It isn't geared towards any one system. If you don't care about the Rev, then don't vote for it.
Also, Sony has had the spotlight for two generations now. Why can't someone other than them wrestle it away? I happen to feel that interest in Rev is here for many reasons, one being the controller. Another could be that many people do get tired of the same ol' same ol', and are looking for something with promise. Nintendo with their "revolution" holds much promise.
Whine about this site being pro-Nintendo if you must. But you have the ability to affect the outcome of this poll. I for one voted for Nintendo.

lunatech @ Apr 21st 2006 2:06PM
So what was last year's E3 about?
Sony got the "most popular" vote. And from the looks of it, it doesn't take much to be the most popular.
Just show a lot of pre-rendered CG smoke and mirrors.
Revolution still looks like it has plenty of tricks up it's sleeve.
Microsoft actually delivered a console out (which got the least popular vote in last year's E3). They promised a console, released on their promised date, yet they get ragged on.
But whatever -- the point is, this year's E3, Sony better show something better than smoke and mirrors. I don't know how they're gonna do that with "limited" viewing availability to their next-gen console. Last year was basically the year of hype for Sony with nothing to show.
Nintendo of course is solid and game focused. They have a great product, good price, and will most likely back up their talk with real games this coming E3.
Shad Genki @ Apr 21st 2006 2:10PM
Since MS and Sony have continued to disappoint, I'm really only interested in what Nintendo has to say, and not the repetative doublespeak and empty promises we usually hear from the other two.

chris3116 @ Apr 21st 2006 3:07PM
Nintendo for me. The hype is for Nintendo at E3 this year. It will be difficult but not impossible to make a good show at E3.
I'm more excited for Revolution than the PS3 and Xbox 360. Because of the challenge of the new controller, I don't know what happen when the NES was released with a d-pad and not a joystiq has a controller. I heard many people said that Nintendo will flop. But it didn't happen.
Reggie, I'm counting on you to kick some a$$ and taking names at E3. As far for the vote, almost the 2/3 were excited about Nintendo.
