Who's really going to support the Wii? [update 12]
It's obvious that Nintendo is going to
support the Wii. After much speculation as to how the controller works (for the record: sensors placed in front of the
TV detect the controller's motion, while internal sensors detect its tilt and yaw), many often speculate as to how one
will use it, or who will support it. After all, what good is a console without third-party development?
That
is where this list comes in. This, we are hoping, will be the definitive list of
titles that showcase the Wii's unique controller. We will be constantly updating this list with new
titles and new information regarding listed titles. Sure, some lists out there are longer, but those lists
are full of untitled projects with no information about the game whatsoever. We hope to provide you some tangible
evidence of Wii titles and not just verbal commitments or praises by the developer community.
This list will
be presented alphabetical by game title. A few of the developers we've listed are independent and still lack a publisher; we have
provided below (when possible) outlets by which publishers can contact these firms.
Here is a list of speculated titles for the Wii (as of May 2nd).
Without further ado, on with the list. All in all, 14 third-party developers have commited a grand total of 14 exclusive titles (and 2 non-exclusive titles promising to use the controller in unique ways) to the Wii. It's no launch lineup, but it is a start:
Developer: Tokyo, Japan-based Spike
History with Nintendo: Minimal; Spike has released a handful of Nintendo DS games but mostly focuses on PlayStation 2 titles for Japan only.
About the Game: In a press release from April 24th, Budokai Tenkaichi 2 will be an action game with fighting and RPG elements, featuring "intense 3D flying and fighting dynamic and takes it to a whole new level with over 100 playable characters, 15 vast and vibrant 3D destructible environments, and nine different game modes, including single and multiplayer battles."
Using the Controller: Players will recreate moves via hand movements. One example cited in the press release is Goku’s Kamehameha, "moving both hands to execute this devastating energy attack." So does this mean each player will use two controllers?
Release Date: Holiday season 2006
Game Title: Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Wii [tentative title]Developer: Tokyo, Japan-based Square Enix
History with Nintendo: Once the mainstay of all its Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest titles, Square and Enix both moved to the Sony PlayStation after its release. Now merged into one super company, Square contributed one title to the GameCube, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles. Square Enix is currently bringing a number of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Mana titles to the Nintendo DS.
About the Game: Very little is known about the title, except that there is also a sequel coming out for the Nintendo DS. We suspect some connection between the two.
Using the Controller: Square Enix president Youichi Wada said the game would feature "online capabilities, magnificent graphics, and an intense use of the revolutionary control of the platform." In other words, currently unknown.
Release Date: Unknown, despite a rumored 2007 release.
Game Title: ElebitsDeveloper: Konami
History with Nintendo: Extensive; Konami has published and developed hundreds of titles for Nintendo, dating back to the beginning.
About the Game: Produced by Shingo Mukaitouge (Guitar Freaks & Drum Mania series), the game features the new Elebit creatures. Players will explore the game world, hunting these Pikmin-like characters, which actually serve as an energy source for the movement of the game world. The name Elebit is derived from "electricity" and "bit" (as in "tiny") — 'tiny power-charged creatures.'
Using the Controller: No specifics are given, but Mukaitouge said his goal is to give players the sensation of actually touching the game world, of manipulating the objects to find things.
Release Date: Unknown; will be shown at E3.

Game Title: Flight Game [tentative title]
Developer: Japan-based Hudson Entertainment
History with Nintendo: Extensive; they are responsible for all of the Mario Party titles and the Bomberman series. During his keynote speech at GDC 2006, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata confirmed that the "best" titles from the TurboGrafx, Hudson's former console, would be available for download via the Virtual Console.
About the Game: Announced via an e-mail sent to those attending E3 2006, not much is known about the actual game except that the title will allow "total plane control as players pilot their planes through various acrobatic flight maneuvers ranging from sky artistry to bomb drops." Our guess, given Hudson's relation to Nintendo franchises, is that it might be the often rumored sequel to Pilotwings.
Using the Controller: The description stated that the title would use the Wii's "Gesture System."
Release Date: Unknown, but it is debuting at E3 this year.
Game Title: The Joy of Painting with Bob
RossDeveloper: AGFRAG Entertainment Group. According to an e-mail from own Joseph Hatcher, everything is currently being moved from San Jose, CA to Kodak, TN.
History with Nintendo: None
About the Game: The game was announced in March 2006 press release by Bob Ross, Inc. The game is currently scheduled for release on the PC, Nintendo DS, and Nintendo Wii. The game is still in the design phase.
Using the Controller: Currently unknown, but we are predicting a scenario where one uses the controller as a paintbrush (or a spray can). Said Hatcher, "to remain competitive with our products, we can't share that information at this time. Control will be intuitive and easy. Watch the Bob Ross TV shows, and you'll start to put two and two together."
Release Date: Unknown; no publisher has been announced. Any interested publishers and / or investors should contact AGFRAG at jhatcher [at] agfrag.com.
Game Title: Madden NFL 2007 [tentative title]Developer: EA
History with Nintendo: Extensive, contributing a plethora of games for every console in existence (including Nintendo's) -- you name it, EA's been there.
About the Game: The Madden franchise has more or less defined the video football genre with its realism and annual updates. Love 'em or hate 'em, having a Madden game on your console is an initiation rite (although wii still long for the return of Mutant League Football ... but wii digress). This version of Madden, however, will not be a port of the PlayStation 3 / Xbox 360 versions. Online play is being planned.
Using the Controller: EA's John Schappert gave an example of some of the controls in a recent IGN interview: you snap the ball by jerking up on the freehand controller, select a receiver using the D-pad / A button, while how you swing the controller relays the intensity of the pass. Juking is done via quick movements with the "nunchaku" attachment, as well as movement using the nunchaku's joystick.
Release Date: Expected to be a launch title.
Game Title:
OrbDeveloper: Crossbeam Studios, located primarily in the "North-West Chicago suburbs," with offices coming soon.
History with Nintendo: None; (independent developer)
About the Game: According to an interview with Total Gamer Zone, "Orb follows three students on a quest to save their abducted teacher, at least that's what it is if you boil it down to it's very basic motivations. The world however is very rich in history, culture, and traditions. there's a lot of magic, and weapons and myth and lore."
Using the Controller In an e-mail exchange with Joystiq, Orb director Greg Szemiot wrote that "I want to try and push the immersion of the world, I want people to be able to pick up an object, inspect it, look at it from any angle, just by turning it in their hands. We're been doing some brainstorming and such and have been working out plans for new camera systems and new ways to look at games than the normal first person and standard third person views. We've also been looking into the player interacting with the game world on a whole new level.. we've even begun thinking of how to move the player and really simplify control schemes."
Release Date: Unknown; the prototype will be shown at E3. Crossbeam is also planning other projects -- Thorn, Darkness, and Orb 2 -- but production will not start until Orb is released. Any publishers interested should contact Crossbeam Studios at publisher_info [at] crossbeamstudios.com.
Game Title: Raid
Over the River Developer: Poland-based NiBRIS
History with Nintendo: None
About the Game: As David McBride, an alcoholic former air force pilot, you must defeat an evil sect known as "Molayarius" through 10 missions spanning different regions and different time periods. The Revolution Report has a full write-up on the game. The game is being developed exclusively for the Nintendo DS and Wii.
Using the Controller: Unknown; likely the tilt of the controller will determine the tilt of your plane, or perhaps the cross hairs of a rotating gun turret on screen.
Release Date: Unknown, but will appear at this year's E3.
Game Title:
Rayman Raving RabbidsDeveloper: Ubisoft; helmed by Michel Ancel
About the Game: According to Ancel, the world of Rayman "has been invaded by thousands of raving mad and vicious bunnies, who have apparently been preparing this assault since the very first Rayman game. We are now sending an SOS to all motivated gamers to help us get rid of them as fast as possible!" This title is also coming out for other current and next-generation consoles.
Using the Controller: One picture shows super-goth-kid controlling the character (sitting on top of a spider) by rotating the controller; the caption promises that many other creatures can be controlled in similar manner.
Release Date: Holidays 2006; will be shown at E3
Game Title: Red
SteelDeveloper: Ubisoft Paris
History with Nintendo: Extensive; the Paris branch of Ubisoft has previously developed the multi-platform titles XIII, 187 Ride or Die, and King Kong.
About the Game: Unveiled in the May 2006 issue of Game Informer, Red Steel is a first-person shooter exclusive to the Wii that revolves around an American man who plans to marry the daughter of a Japanese Yakuza boss. Trouble arises when a warring Yakuza lord kidnaps the bride-to-be in order to obtain her father's ceremonial katana (hence the title). Your job is to find your fiancee and bring to justice the kidnapper by gaining the support of other crime syndicates.
Using the Controller: The game will utilize the "nunchaku" attachment of the Wii controller to move around. The player can use the controller to push objects (pushing the controller forward), reloading (pulling backwards), and the gun you are holding will twist accordingly with the twists of the controller. The game is reported to also allow you to equip a katana and lob grenades (underhand or overhand, relative to how you move the controller). The game starts out promoting reckless violence, but later emphasizes more precise aiming as you grow more comfortable using the controller.
Release Date: Confirmed as launch title.
Game
Title: SadnessDeveloper: Poland-based NiBRIS
About the Game: A psychological game the developer hopes will "scare not with the amount of blood but with sheer atmosphere. Imagine a game in which you do not use guns or knives but you will have to protect yourself with the objects you find exploring the ground -- a stone, a stick, etc" (from the IGN interview). The game will be presented in black & white.
Using the Controller: From to the same interview, "Some examples of using the controller - you swing a torch with it to scare the rats off; you slit the throat (controller as a piece of glass or a knife); if you want to climb the wall you will have to hook a rope over the piece of a wall sticking out (controller serving as a lasso). And this is only the beginning."
Release Date: Unknown; will not be shown at E3.
Game Title: Skatto
Golf Pangya WiiDeveloper: Korean-based Ntreev Soft; published by Tecmo
History with Nintendo: None; Tecmo did not support the GameCube, but has contributed a number of titles to the NES, SNES, Nintendo DS, and both Game Boys.
About the Game: Pangya is a casual online golf game for the PC that was free to download and play, but cost money for virtual property such as clothing and equipment. The Wii version will feature updated graphics; according to the latest Famitsu, the Wii version will focus on the offline experience, while still allowing for downloadable content.. This title has not been announced for other consoles, so for now it is an exclusive third-party game.
Using the Controller: Tecmo producer Keisuke Kikuchi (Fatal Frame) believes that players will enjoy moving their bodies for the game -- will we be required to stand up and "swing" the controller? Kikuchi also noted that a more standard, button-based control scheme is in the works.
Release Date: Confirmed as launch title for Japan.
Game Title: Spider-Man 3Developer: unknown; published by Activision
History with Nintendo: Activison's involvement with Nintendo has been extensive, providing dozens of title (including the Tony Hawk series) for each of Nintendo's consoles.
About the Game: Nothing is known; based on the 3rd Spider-Man film (whose 2nd villain is still unknown). According to an article on WiiSpot.com, the game has been promised to be different than the Xbox 360 and PS3 titles; the previous Spider-Man game featured Grand Theft Auto-style gameplay.
Using the Controller: Unknown, but promised to use controller in unique way -- web slinging, perhaps?
Release Date: May 2007; will be announced (and possibly shown) at E3.
Game
Title: Sunder: Land of DivideDeveloper: LifeSpark Studios
History with Nintendo: None; founded this year by Derek Sarbou and Kenton Bailey of Playbomb.
About the Game: According to an interview with Zogdog, Sunder will be an MMO that may have a single-player campaign. Sunder itself is a hollowed out planet, allowing for two cultures to form -- one on the surface and one inside the planet. Needless to say, the two cultures eventually collide and some fighting breaks out.
Using the Controller: The entire control scheme is mapped out here. Some of the freehand movement suggestions include "gesture, thrust, twist, drop, lift ... choke, hold, greet, spin, flip, pet, knock, wave, salute," etc.
Release Date: Unknown; the title is currently just a concept and lacks a publisher.
Game Title: Super Monkey Ball: Banana
BlitzDeveloper: Sega
History with Nintendo: Extensive; aside from that whole rivalry back when consoles were measured in bits (8-bit, 16-bit, etc.) Sega and Nintendo were competitors. After the Dreamcast met its unfortunate demise, Sega became a third-party developer and made quite a few titles on the GameCube, including the original Super Monkey Ball.
About the Game: The primary aspect of all Monkey Ball titles is to roll your encased monkey around a twisty maze with a bottomless pit (think: Marble Madness). Another feature known to the Monkey Ball series is its collection of mini-games: Banana Blitz is no exception (although the details of these games have yet to be revealed). Sega's Toshihiro Nagoshi promises more mini-games this time around than ever before.
Using the controller: For the main game, Nagoshi describes the gameplay: "instead of tilting the controller lever, players will be tilting the controller itself to tilt the game board. I'm sure you will realize how perfectly this operation matches the game."
Release Date: Unknown; will be shown at E3.
Game Title: Tony Hawk: Downhill JamDeveloper: Toys for Bob
History with Nintendo: Minimal; Toys for Bob is known for its acclaimed Star Control series, but has only developed two titles for Nintendo (both on GameCube): Madagascar and Disney's Extreme Skate Adventure (the latter of which received fairly decent reviews).
About the Game: If you do not know about the Tony Hawk series, then you have been living under a rock. Just in case you are an ascetic, the basic premise of the game will be to skate around and pull off cool tricks. This version is more of a racing game. According to the June 2006 edition of Nintendo Power, Downhill Jam "will incorporate four-player split-screen multiplayer, eight new racers, as well as eight environments modeled after real-world locations, including Machu Picchu in the Andes and the hills of San Francisco."
Using the Controller: Also from the Nintendo Power magazine, "by using the Revolution controller's motion-sensitivity, racers will be able to turn and boost without touching a button. The game will also feature button combinations to pull off tricks that recall the controls for the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater and Tony Hawk's Underground titles."
Release Date: Unknown; will likely be shown at E3.
[update 1: Just to clarify, this is a list of third-party titles (i.e. not by Nintendo, Retro, Camelot, etc.) that we have some information on (since, for example, Trauma Center Wii has only been recently announced as existing, we are not going to add the game until we can actually put more information regarding its development). This list will be constantly expanding and will receive major updates before, during, and after E3.]
[update 2: Cleared up some language. So as not to "cop out," we will be including non-exclusive third-party software, but not until we have some tangible information on them -- something more than just an announcement. This list will likely be updated almost daily, so we do not feel that this is a premature feature as it will be expanded on a regular basis when new information arises.][update 3: Added Pangya Golf and updated Orb; yet again updated introductory paragraphs]
[update 4: Added Dragonball Z]
[update 5: Added Tony Hawk; awaiting some more info on SpongeBob and Avatar]
[update 6: clarified what Downhill Jam is about -- thanks, balohna]
[update 7: updated Pangya Golf; added Monkey Ball and Elebits]
[update 8: added Madden, renamed all Rev's to Wii's -- new graphic coming soon!]
[update 9: New graphic!]
[update 10: cleaned up the formatting]
[update 11: added new information regarding Madden Wii]
[update 12: added Rayman and Spider-Man 3 titles; tentative list of all Wii titles]

Thats a pretty crappy list. My desire to play any of those games is about nil. Except maybe that Sadness one... that sounds KIND OF interesting.
Im a Nintendo fan, too. Its just those dont look very exciting. Wtf... painting with a fat white guy with a fro? I still can't beleive its not an april fools joke.
Lucerin Red @ Apr 24th 2006 8:14AM
This is missing 3 titles that have been officially announced. Activision's Fony Hawk's Dawnhill Jam and Spiderman 3, and then also DBZ Sparking 2 or DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 2 being developed by spike and published by atari. Both are officially announced according to IGN. Not to mention the quite a few that havent been officially announced.
jay @ Apr 24th 2006 8:14AM
Theres some studio, the name eludes me, who are supposedly developing 3 Revolution games.
At the moment I'm only excited about what Nintendo and Retro Studios are bringing to the table. Course that will change post E3.
jay @ Apr 24th 2006 8:16AM
Nevermind me, it was Crossbeam Studios.
peeweejd @ Apr 24th 2006 8:20AM
that is a very very sad list.
with all the crap nintendo is saying, I was expecting this to be a big list.
jay @ Apr 24th 2006 8:23AM
Hold on a sec, Sunder sounds *very* good, and I didn't know that Red Steel had grenades and the likes. Both have just become must-haves for me :) Maybe whatever Square pushes out, but I haven't enjoyed any new (read, non-port) Square, Enix or Square Enix games since FF8 onwards. PS2, GC and PC.
Raid Over the River looks like my kind of game too.
I best get saving. Looks like I'll have a lot to buy.
Yoschi @ Apr 24th 2006 8:24AM
Nice list of Games, really looking forward to it!
I think it is going to grow much more when they reveal everything at E3.
PS: the link for the control scheme from the Game "Sunder: Land of Divide" doesn't work, at least not for me..
Scooby Doo @ Apr 24th 2006 8:31AM
I just want to paint happy trees with Bob Ross. That's reason alone to own a Revolution.
Josh @ Apr 24th 2006 8:32AM
For everyone who is complain about the small and, to some, rather boring list, wait until E3. I'm sure there will be plenty of new announcements from third parties and, of course, Nintendo itself. Those "in the know" have already said there are some great games already lined up for the system. Just be patient. It's only 15 more days...
Josh @ Apr 24th 2006 8:33AM
Oh, and you forgot Pangya Golf.
Flying Caveman @ Apr 24th 2006 8:38AM
You also forgot Super Smash Bros and Tony Hawks Downhill Jam or whatever.
Disposable Hero @ Apr 24th 2006 8:47AM
I'm pretty sure a while back, possibly even before the Revolution controller was revealed in september, that when the developers of the MMO Pirates of the Caribbean game announced that game, they said it would be for the 360, ps3, and revolution.
But whether theyre sticking to that or not will be seen at E3.
Armin @ Apr 24th 2006 8:49AM
Good job Joystiq, along with those titles and Nintendo's own, the launch should be pretty good
Robotochan @ Apr 24th 2006 8:50AM
Remember folks there will be about 20 titles at release, all of them should be revealed at E3...
jonat3 @ Apr 24th 2006 9:01AM
Yes, there will be atleast 20 launch titles, perhaps even more. What Joystiq tried to do, was select the games with the most unique control style demonstrating the revmote's capabilities. If you notice, the games they picked are spread across different genres.
J B Cougar @ Apr 24th 2006 9:05AM
Thank robotchan, for citing what really is common knowledge (not being sarcasttic). The rest of you need to calm down. Seriously. Twenty titles, confirmed and on the record. What, did a bunch of Sony execs get a hold of this forum for today?
Kazi @ Apr 24th 2006 9:06AM
You should add the second installment of Trauma Center (Rumored to be Trauma Center, but Atlus has confirmed that they're making a sequal on the Revolution of their most popular game)
kevin @ Apr 24th 2006 9:06AM
...there's a reason this list is weak... it's cause it's incomplete...
AQ Interactive- 2 titles- http://www.revolutionreport.com/articles/read/231
koei- http://www.revolutionreport.com/articles/read/106
THQ- http://www.revolutionreport.com/articles/read/88
Bandai- www.revolutionreport.com/articles/read/15
...also, there's pangya golf and tony hawk already announced... and i'm sure there's even more i'm missing, but whatevers...
Rjcc @ Apr 24th 2006 9:08AM
Bob Ross = killer app.
I wasn't considering the rev at all, but for happy trees, I will buy one.
Miharu @ Apr 24th 2006 9:16AM
I'm sure you all noticed already, but looks like Revolution will be the machine for newbie/unknown developers to make games for... That can only be a good thing. More games from more people! IMHO that list isn't really bad at all, it doesn't have even one Nintendo game which is good since Nintendo will most likely have their Mario Party, Mario Baseball, Mario Tennis, Mario Paint and M-... Wario Ware on it.
game_hunter @ Apr 24th 2006 9:16AM
This is a rather pathetic list. IGN had a much better one back a few months ago but it seems they were forced to take it down. Some of the titles not on this list that are confirmed by the companies themselves include Cars (THQ produced Pixar movie tie-in), Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam and Dragonball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 2. The strongly rumored games not listed above that I can remember from that IGN list include Battalion Wars Online, an untitled n-Space project, an Activision Spider-Man game, Pangya Golf, Trauma Center Revolution, an untitled AQ comic book tie-in game, an untitled AQ action game (might be the Sonic game mentioned next), Sonic Revolution, an untitled Blitz games title, an untitled Capcom game (not Resident Evil), an untitled Grasshopper Manufacture game, an untitled Sega game (rumored to be Nights related) and 2-5 EA games are rumored (speculation says Madden, FIFA and Tiger Woods). There are also around ten Nintendo first party games that are confirmed so I'd say the line-up is looking pretty hot.
Don Jose @ Apr 24th 2006 9:22AM
Nintendo wants me to NOT purchase the Rev. With one exception, every game on the list sounds like trash. Even with all the hype and fanboy drooling over Red Steel, I could have more fun with better graphics by throwing darts at posters in my little brother's room.
The exception I mentioned above? This is sick, but it's Bob Ross. Iwata-san, I am so f**king disappointed in you!
joshua @ Apr 24th 2006 9:23AM
wow that list is incredibly dull. its possible that revolution will be a failure
that guy @ Apr 24th 2006 9:27AM
Yeah, you's guys have to calm down. There's gonna be so much stuff unveiled at E3 it's gonna be sensory overload.
Isn't it safe to put Super Smash Bros. on this list though? I thought that was pretty much guaranteed.
And I can't wait to see Pikmin 3 on this list. If it's not a launch game, I'm gonna cry. As I've said many times before, that game was made for the Revolution controller, plain and simple.
Korey @ Apr 24th 2006 9:29AM
WOW Bob Ross as A video game and i thought watching his show high was fun now i can actually play it and paint tons of happy little trees and cheery clouds naw to be honest Red Steel Looks amazing I loved crystal chronicles
except filling the chalice seemed repetitive and guys lets not forget the long list of old skool titles we can get
MarkTAW @ Apr 24th 2006 9:37AM
"you slit the throat (controller as a piece of glass or a knife)"
Am I the only one who thinks that the more directly the actions you take lead to virtual deaths the creepier it becomes? It's one thing to hit circle square X Y and another atogether to actually slit someone's throat with the flick of your wrist.
dsub @ Apr 24th 2006 9:44AM
did you expect more? after the gamecube's piss poor third party support, This sounds about right. This, and the fact that nintendo has been so hush-hush about the revo, AND the fact that developer's haven't had dev. kits for very long add to the list of reasons why nintendo isn't really starting out this generation with a bang.
I've said it all along. Numerous titles have been announced as cross-platform by alot of the big name studios, but not a single one of them has been announced for Revolution. What? Does nintendo think that since they have a cool new (unproven) controller that every developer is going to get all experimental and dump millions into an exclusive title for them? Or better yet, spend alot more money to figure out ways to alter the game to work with nintendo's controller? Sure, it looks cool, and appears to open a new train of creativity, which is why developers seem to like it, but no developer is going to make something for the revo until it's proven itself. I think the guy (don't know his name) who developed the katamari games was right.
The fact that the new controller forces developers to come up with ways to integrate nintendo's controller into the game could be both a bad thing, and a good thing. Good, in that it can showcase a new style of gameplay never done before, and bad because, well...that's what I was talking about above.
Congratulations nintendo, at least for the moment, you have alienated yourselves. The only game here that appears to interest me is Red Steel. The rest, well we'll just have to wait and see. I know I'm not going to drop $250 just to play one game. I'm sure there will be the usual first party support though in games like Mario Party 946, and Mario Kart Double Dash Strikes Back Again One Last Time Revolution, or perhaps Mario Power Badminton will make a showing as well.
Angelo @ Apr 24th 2006 9:49AM
This list is very exciting; I do not think it is trash at all. I am no fanboy, but I found these games to be interesting.
- FF:CCR
- Bob Ross
- Orb
- Red Steel
- Sadness
- Sunder
Even though this is just a chunk of what Nintendo is going to show at E3, I am even more convinced to buy the Revolution. I think with so many indie developers on board, this proves to be the beginning of a new day. We are breaking out of the norm here. I think the reason I, and many others, have strayed away from console gaming is because of the same old routine games (Nintendo also guilty here). Once in a while there will be an indie developer that tops the charts and becomes a part of us and others that release and just fade away. With these developers being propped up before a console release, it will give them and the system much support by many.
student @ Apr 24th 2006 9:54AM
I'm surprised so many people are leaping to hate the system. This list already proves that people are willing to experiment. Games like Sadness, Orb, Red Steel and Bob Ross are already giving a new twist on games. I'm curious what you guys would have preferred to hear about instead.
Not to mention, E3 is right around the corner so a lot of titles will not be announced yet.
When you add Smash Brothers, a new Metroid Prime and Nintendo's other titles, I'm confused as to why you guys are hating so much. Maybe people should try looking before they leap.
Alydra @ Apr 24th 2006 9:55AM
I guess you other commenters do realize that this list is just CONFIRMED TITLES.
As in, not the plethora of unannounced games that probably exist and such or titles that have not been confirmed by a developer anywhere.
Wait for E3, that's all I can say.
that guy @ Apr 24th 2006 9:55AM
Hey dsub, you're an idiot. You say developers aren't going to dump millions into an exclusive title. They won't HAVE to dump millions into the Rev because that's Nintendo's whole point, for years now - they want to make it cheap and easy for developers (big and small) to make new, unique, interesting games. That's the beauty of the Revolution (forget about the controller for just one second and focus just on the console) - it's going to be very developer-friendly.
Oh, and I love how you add in at the end 'I'm sure there will be the usual first party support though'. That's not something you can just casually throw in to the end of your argument, because you and I both know that when it comes to first party games, Nintendo destroys Microsoft's entries and Sony's entries. It may be MarioKart 4589, but if it's a wicked game (like MarioKart DS was), who cares how many they make?
Exo @ Apr 24th 2006 9:56AM
anyone basing whast to come from rev from this list, is retarded, seriously.
Joystiq does not know every game in development, and they even said its not finished
These are just the titles that have been talked about recently.
Last time I checked lots of companies were making games for it, and guess what, they will be talked about at E3. Hideo Kojima Is also doing his own, Rev only project.
so far this list only has titles from 2 major companies, and then the rest are from small studios that have never made a game and only talk about their games because they need a developer.
Tony @ Apr 24th 2006 9:59AM
Good idea. N-Sider already has a pretty huge version of this, but it's nice to see more info elsewhere.

There was also a Ray-Man game announced last week by Ubi, wasn't there? Also, I'm sure there will be at least a few 3rd party launch titles announced at or before E3. After saying there would be 20 launch titles, you can't expect Nintendo to use all their big IP's at once. That would not be good for the rest of the year after launch. I struggled enough with Tetris and Metroid for the DS launched together. What happens when I have to choose between Mario 128, Metroid Prime 3, SSBM, Red Steel, DKR, LoZ TP (not really Rev but sort of), Raid over the River and a second controller. This could end up being as expensive as PS3 when you factor in the games. I'd rather have 5-10 at launch and stagger the rest for 1-2 months afterwards. I didn't even mention the Hudson game, Kid Icarus (maybe), Pikmin and Animal Crossing amongst others. There will probably also be some awful iteration of Pac-Man from Namco a la Pac N Roll.
I'm sure most Third Party Developer's are waiting to see what Nintendo presents as their IP's and uses those gameplay mechanics. Since Nintendo has the best knowledge of the abilities and limits of the controller they're going to have to pave the way. I expect the Third Party stuff to really pick up in Second Generation, when there's a better idea of functionality, uses and a firm user base.

Hey dsub, if a dev thought the Rev's controller wasn't all that hot but still liked the platform for its inexpensiveness then they could always just make the game playable with the controller shell.

Sell your first-born and buy 'em all!!!
Isn't it better to have a lot more to choose from, than not enough?

...not to rag on joystiq too much, but upon further inspection, this list seems rather half-arsed... a simple googling of "revolution third party list" yielded this from http://www.n-sider.com/articleview.php?articleid=497 :
(list of confirmed supporting third parties)
Acclaim
Activision
AQ Interactive
ArtDink
Atlus
Bandai
Blitz Games
Camelot Software Planning
Capcom
Electronic Arts
GameFreak
Gearbox
Grass Hopper Interactive
HAL Laboratory
Intelligent Systems
Koei
Konami
Kuju Entertainment
Mad Catz
Midway
n-Space
Namco
Natsume
Nintendo
Nubytech
Retro Studios
Sega Sammy
Square Enix
Tecmo
THQ
Ubisoft
as of 3.18.06, n-sider claims 29 confirmed titles to be in development... due to the various ironclad nintendo NDAs, these titles don't, for the most part, have any concept art or screens or details or even titles out there, but they have been confirmed to be in development... just thought i'd share...
that guy @ Apr 24th 2006 10:17AM
Yeah but Kevin - joystiq is focussing on SPECIFIC titles that have been announced officially. For instance, we all know THQ is making one if not several games for the Rev, but nothing has been officially announced, therefore, it's not on this list.
Paul @ Apr 24th 2006 10:17AM
Important to remember here that most big companies are in complete NDA until E3, that's why most of the only things that have leaked are from independent studios.
Also, this is only third party games in this list, that's why the title is "Who is supporting revolution". Nintendo games will not be included in the list.
Finally, there are a couple of games missing.
Pangya Golf from Tecmo, for one. Dragonball Z from Atari, for another, and Spongebob Squarepants from THQ(see, even Revolution will get licensed crap!).
The latter there was said by Tommy Tallarico to have been demoed at THQs press gaggle last week.

What's with these idiots being dissapointed about the selection of games? This is probably a third or less of the final list of third-party launch window games. There are no surprises on the list, as they've been announced already, so why do some of you sound surprised?
"Congratulations nintendo, at least for the moment, you have alienated yourselves."
WTF dsub?
Karmakin @ Apr 24th 2006 10:18AM
It's pretty much confirmed that Nintendo has a psudo-gag order on companies until E3.
My guess is that Nintendo, even though they're not "competing" with Sony and MS, still has an urge to have the best showing at E3 of all the companies, so they're going to bombard with titles.
Matt @ Apr 24th 2006 10:27AM
"this is a list of third-party titles (i.e. not by Nintendo, Retro, Camelot, etc.) that are *exclusive* to the Revolution"
Key word there is "exclusive", I love how half the comments in this post seem to have forgotten about that.
Oh, and if you don't think Red Steel is at least a little cool looking, you should be shot. With a revolution controller. That, or we can just throw the PS3's boomerang at you.
Intangible 360 @ Apr 24th 2006 10:28AM
That's a pretty disappointing list but I would still buy a Revolution before I'd buy a PS3. It complements my Xbox 360 better.
Disposable Hero @ Apr 24th 2006 10:32AM
Its pathetic how all these people look at this list and, for some reason, possibly their own stupidity, believe this list is THE final list of 3rd party support or even just all the launch titles for the Revolution.
Come on, this sites slogan is "Gamers with an IQ" or something, don't be such idiots. First off, there have been at least 3 other 3rd party titles officially confirmed but not on the list, so that should start getting you asking if these are really all the 3rd party titles available for the Revolution. Also, you've probably noticed how barely any games were announced until just now when we're starting to see developers announce titles to see at E3. You can't possibly believe that theyre just gonna all of a sudden stop announcing them since this list was made. More titles will be announced this week, next week, and then the majority of them will be fully announced and seen and played at E3.
Seriously guys, pull your heads out of your asses. I'm tempted to call you fanboys of the other systems, because I can't think of any reason how you people can be so blatantly stupid.
Ninja Monkey Lover @ Apr 24th 2006 10:33AM
It is true that this list is far from complete, even with today's knowledge. As people have said, there are several games from big name companies that are confirmed.
It should also be noted that Sunder and the Crossbeam games (as well as Bob Ross) will all take a LOT of work, and so far the teams responsible for them are showing little more than some mediocre concept art. That doesn't inspire much confidence.
While Joseph Hatcher did secure the rights to Bob Ross, he is only a recently fired QA Compliance Tester from our favorite megacorporation EA (according to his myspace page). This leads me to believe that any hopes of a Bob Ross game competing with Mario Paint Revolution are slim to none.
Lifespark Studios' game "Sunder" is nothing more than a collection of ideas of two people whose blog hasn't been updated since February. Sure they've got some 3D renders of weapons and some backstory, but Kenton Bailey himself admits "I have a known history for fakes/hoaxes concerning the Revolution."
Crossbeam Studios started out as a bunch of kids in high school who thought up ideas for video games. While that was back in 1999 and they may have acquired more talent since then, all they have is concept art and ideas. I hope they do well, but they are "working" on three games at once and that usually leads to nothing getting done.
NIBRIS has some potential, and will probably be the first of these companies to actually produce something. Whether or not that "something" will be a great game is yet to be seen, but I really hope they set a high standard for indie developers.
In other words, while I am very excited for the Revolution and all that it means to low budget developers, I am also a realist. I know that even simple projects can take a very, very long time and a lot of effort that first timers might not be willing to put out. If these groups were aiming for the Virtual Console that would be more reasonable, but I wouldn't list them along side games like Pangya Golf or Final Fantasy Chronicles Revolution.

"After all, what good is a console without third-party development?"
Up until this point, the reason that I own Nintendo consoles is to play games made byyou guessed itNintendo. There was an article here on Joystiq a while ago that stated that Nintendo was the fifth best-selling game publisher in the industry. Ninety percent of my library for my GCN, GBA, and DS are first-party titles.
To answer your question, what good is a console without third-party development? That all depends on the caliber of your second and first-party developers. Many of the highest-ranked titles on Metacritic are from Nintendo-owned studios, and in over twenty years in the video game industry they've only ever posted a single quarter of loss.
Will the Revolution's unique control interface persuade big-name developers to make games that break the traditional mold? No, not until Nintendo proves that the Revolution is more than a flash in the pan. Until then, it's going to be up to Nintendo and Nintendo alone to develop games that push the boundaries of what we perceive video games to be.
Ejab @ Apr 24th 2006 10:48AM
I dont see any games, just stupid gimmics.
Ninja Monkey Lover @ Apr 24th 2006 10:57AM
Just thought I'd mention that THQ officially announced its Revolution games for 2006 (a.k.a. "launch") and, while they are not exclusive, I think it is good to hear.
(From Gamasutra)
SpongeBob SquarePants: Creatures from the Krusty Krab
Avatar: The Last Airbender
Both games are from Nickelodeon, neither has been announced for the 360 or PS3, and the SpongeBob title wasn't even announced for the plain old Xbox.
While I realize that most people on this site are thinking "Crappy Nickelodeon titles?! Who cares!" the important thing is that these titles will help push the Revolution into the homes of many children this Christmas season. If the same $200 system will entertain the teens (Red Steel, Metroid Prime 3, Smash Bros.) and the kiddies (Nickelodeon), it is better than a $500 system that is just for young teens (and those with a young teen mentality).
