Bethesda quashes Oblivion port rumor
Yesterday, there was talk of Elder Scrolls IV:
Oblivion ports to the PlayStation 3 and PSP. Developer Bethesda Softworks wasted no time in dismissing the rumors
with this response: "At present, we have no announced plans to bring Oblivion to any platforms other than
PC or Xbox 360." According to Eurogamer, a gaming forum participant named "snatches" claimed he saw the alleged ports on a Bethesda release list for November. Disappointing news for the Sony faithful, although you have to keep in mind the official response includes our favorite ambiguous marketing gems, "at present", and, "no announced plans." More grist for the rumor mill. We'll keep you posted.

viva la revolution!

There is NO WAY ANY elder scrolls game will EVER be ported to the psp. Smackdown vs raw takes 6 minutes+ to get into a game, imagine the load times on a game like this? It would probably take 20 min+ per loading screen to load the world.
dsub @ Apr 26th 2006 2:09PM
I knew this wasn't true. It just wouldnt be worth the time it would take to port it over. That and I'm sure bethesda is hard at work on an expansion pack for oblivion right now.

meh, im not dissapointed. heh could care less....

I will be buying a PS3 and whether Oblivion is ported, makes no difference to me. There will be more than enough RPGs to meet my hack n' slash addiction. I knew this "news" was fake from the first post because of the PSP port... Like as if. I love my PSP, but there is no way in hell they'll be able to port a directx app like that to a portable platform (with 24MB of RAM).
Matt @ Apr 26th 2006 2:37PM
C'mon guys, if nothing else, Microsoft at least had Bethesda locked into an agreement to not announce any plans to port Oblivion to the PS3 until much later this year. So quickly denying the rumor seems in line with that obligation. Just my two cents.

"Bethesda quashes Oblivion port rumor"
Shouldn't that say "squashes"?

After the money-grabbing DLC content, im suprised the guys at Bethesda havent already announced PS3, PSP, Nintendo DS, N-Gage, Gizmondo, GBA, Magic Wizard Trading Card game and Board Game versions already! Can't believe these gimps have the rights to Fallout.

Although the graphics are pretty and the world is impressively large, Oblivion is just a _game_ of menu navigating from what I can tell. And the fighting wasn't stepped up enough from Morrowind, its still pretty bland. Its like a GIANT zelda game sans the fun.

"i hate beth if theyre going to make me get a 360 to play this game. (im not upgrading my pc)"
so you want new games with all the new features that come along with new games... but you dont want to get the hardware to support them.. and you hate the developer for it? clearly i'm missing something here. (although i do wholeheartedly agree with viva la revolution!)

The link "talk" in the first line is a link to edit the entry via the WeblogsInc CMS. I'm guessing the author acciently copied that link rather than the permalink.
No big deal, just thought I'd let you know.

Folks, they haven't given a denial. Saying "...we have no announced plans...." is not the same as "we have no plans".

To AceMilo and anyone else here who doesn't have an imagination or a memory:
Handheld versions of games are NEVER direct ports of console games from the same era. They never have been. Look at Sonic on the Mega Drive and compare to the Game Gear. Look at Mario on the Snes and compare to the Gameboy. Look at just about any other game that EVER came out on a console and a handheld during the same couple of years and you will ALWAYS see technically less demanding versions on the handheld.
Just WHAT the blue fuck are you whining about? No-one EVER intended to even ATTEMPT a PSP version of a game like Oblivion. It would have been adapted for the hardware and probably been Zelda-style top-down affair - which would have been a piece of piss for the PSP to run.
Please stop banging on about an issue that doesn't even exist.

No. That's not really it at all. Menu navigating? You're comparing Oblivion to Zelda? With an unfavorable result?! You obviously know nothing about it. Make no mistake--IF you enjoy RPGs, AND you can't play Oblivion, you ARE missing out. Sorry to disappoint you--but it's a great game.

@16 - Dave
I'll take your word for it, I've only watched someone play it for 45 minutes or so, and he was in a menu for more than half the time. It just looked really really boring to me. You aren't disappointing me at all, just pointing out what I saw. I still stand behind the fighting comment though. Hand to hand, sword to sword, battle axe to rat is pretty dull.
I do like some RPGs, but I haven't played many. FFIII(US), FFII(US), Secret of Mana/Evermore, and a couple more probably. Waiting for Children of Mana to come out for the DS, that should be tight
Seer S @ Apr 26th 2006 6:41PM
This doesn't mean anything. It just means they haven't announced plans to port it. They don't say they aren't going to do this. Your caveat should have been bigger, imo.
Dave @ Apr 26th 2006 10:26PM
hepme,
It sounds as though you're describing character creation in Oblivion. You could argue that the game hasn't actually started at that point. And, although combat may not be as intricate as you'd like, you have a number of options with regard to weapons--and your skills/options increase with your level. Oblivion lacks the combat move options of fighting games such as Dead or Alive--but, then again, it's not intended to be a fighting game.
