Gans to direct Onimusha film
Brotherhood
of the Wolf and Silent Hill director Christophe Gans will be manning the chair for a film based on
Onimusha, Capcom's popular action-adventure franchise. Silent Hill had a successful weekend, and if it
continues to perform well at the box office, Gans is under contract to direct its sequel. This means the
Onimusha flick could be a few years off. Hopefully, Brotherhood wasn't a fluke, and Gans will deliver another top notch action thriller, samurai style. There's no mention of Onimusha 3's Jean Reno appearing in the film, but adding Brotherhood's Monica Belucci to the cast wouldn't hurt.

"There's no mention of Onimusha 3's Jean Reno appearing in the film"
What about Takeshi Kaneshiro - you know, the other guy you've actually got a picture of above?
Doubtful, I know, but it does start to get a little weird when you've got movies based on video games that already have the likenesses of famous actors in them.

This is a pretty decent franchise, so hopefully, they won't muck it up.
Jeff, I'm sure the main character will be in the movie even though cast and story hasn't been created yet. If they announce a completely different story, that will be a recipe for disaster.

Exactly what I was thinking Jeff. What about Takeshi Kaneshiro? You think if they were going to make an Onimusha movie they'd use the person who was already casted for the part in the video game. He speaks English, Japanese, and even Mandarin, so I don't see how it would be a problem.

Nice. Gans did a great job with Silent Hill. Let's just hope Avary isn't writing the script again O_O

Dear Hollywood,
Please stop making crappy movies based on games.
Sincerely Yours,
Everybody.

Great director so it should be good. I'm expecting a rated R movie with lots of blood and guts flying everywhere. He should do it like he did with Silent Hill to make the movie reflect the game so well, but he needs to do a much better story this time. Also I'd only like to see an authentic Japanese cast without stupid guys like Jean Reno.

Warlord:
It's not just that it's the main character. Samanosuke's character model is basically Kaneshiro Takeshi.
If they're making the movie, it's only right to use him as the lead.

I agree with Chiablo post. DON'T MAKE ANYMORE MOVIES BASED ON VIDEO GAMES PLEASE! My god did Silent Hill blow. Its up there with the Super Mario Bros movie.
Moogle @ Apr 26th 2006 5:39PM
HEY! I *liked* Super Mario Brothers (the movie). But, then, I was 12 at the time. :)
Yet to see SH, but I've heard more positive comments than negative. I think it was just aimed at a very tight market segment, and that does not a box-office-smash make.

I a big Silent Hill fan myself. I may have been a vitim of overhype. I kept telling myself the movie was gonna rule. But that movie was so god aweful. Bad script. Third rate acting. $20 down the drain. If I could only turn back time to get back those 2 hours of my life that were stolen.

Silent hill is one of the better video game movie adaptations, that's still not saying much.
Jakanden @ Apr 26th 2006 6:54PM
I personally enjoyed Silent Hill and I am a huge fan of the series. Admittedly, I was not happy with the explanation of the events (ie: The ending) but overall I was pleased with the adaptation.
I am an avid fan of Gans since seeing Crying Freeman and I thoroughly enjoyed Brotherhood of the Wolf as well. I would eagerly anticipate him doing an Onimusha film.
dead_red_eyes @ Apr 26th 2006 7:41PM
You guys need to mention Takeshi Kaneshiro, the actual star and model of the game, not Jean Reno, from the 3rd game...he's cool, but hes not the star. One of the things I loved about Onimusha was that they had great voice acting for the Japanese cast, and you could play the game with english subtitles, hardly any games feature that anymore, which really blows.
I really really hope that Takeshi Kanesheshiro is going to be in it, he's a damn fine actor, in fact he's the man. Ever watch "House of Flying Daggers", or "Returner", even his new film "Perhaps Love" is great.
C'mon Gans, do it right !

Can I just make a suggestion to the masses of the video game world and beyond....if you want to make some good movies that are based on games...please please PLEASE!!! make sure its good! one idea i thought of in regards to silent hill. get people who have played the game a million times (im at about 55, with time at 2:17:42 using no guns) and have them supervise the making of the movie so it doesnt suck, or just get someone that doesnt have a reputation like Gans, where he can make a few good movies then kill someones dreams of someone and waste thier hard earned money. but anywho... USE GAMERS!!!

Anyone who has played SH2 should easily be able to see why they left the ending the way that they did.
In my humble opinion SH2 was the best of the series and although a lot was taken from SH1 and 2 to make the film the story line was left untouched. Sean Bean starting the film after just pulling into a Silent Hill toilet out side of the city beside the lake looking at him self in the mirror anyone?
I personally liked the film and I liked the strong symbolism that was used and although some of the dialogue was cheesy, I thought that it was over all well done, the end was the only part that left me a little out of sorts (the main "gore" scene where she re-enacted her revenge) for a movie that is so tightly inter-linked with what had gone before that a few things stand out as out of place, "spoiler" ---- such as the barb wire "arms", I think a better device would have been the ash babies coming out and dragging then towns folk into the burning pit below.
either way I liked it I thought that the music which was written by the game score creator was excellent and did a wonderful job of building tension.
as to the game to film nay sayer's I would advise them that this Genre is still a burgeoning one and still being tweaked film by film, some will take steps forward some with take steps back but it will get there. ;)

The Silent Hill movie was okay. Nothing great, some really bad plot progression and dialogue. And some terrible actors with high pitched squeeky voices. But the atmosphere of the game to big screen stuck, so it was worth seeing in the end. He can do better for SH2, im sure.
Lando @ Apr 27th 2006 11:52AM
I see a lot of complaints here about the Silent Hill movie, and most of them fall squarely within the writer's realm of responsibility, not the director's. I find Gans to be a director with a unique style and a lot of potential. A better writer would have made Silent Hill a better experience, but the intensity and atmosphere and the visualization is what proves Gans' prowess as a director. With a solid script I'd say Onimusha has a lot of potential in his hands.
JacKal @ May 15th 2006 10:49PM
I agree. Most of the directing of the movie was spot on, and the writing unfortunately fell flat. I don't see a problem with Gans cooperating for the Onimusha movie, as well as a (hopefully PLEASE better written) Silent Hill Movie.
Corey A. Troup @ Jul 3rd 2006 6:04PM
My name is Corey A. Troup and I am writing the Silent Hill 2 and 3 film scripts to put on stage at Keyser High School in West Virginia this year, and I would love to share them with Christophe Gans as a Silent Hill fan. If it's possible, I'd love to have response to this from anyone, including the director himself. It's all happening!
