Pirate Baby's Cabana Battle Street Fight 2006

Wow. Just...wow.
Pirate Baby's Cabana Battle Street Fight 2006 is an incredible piece of video-game infused animation by artist Paul Robertson. There's a great writeup at selectparks:
His work has been shown in many galleries in Australia, but until now hasn't found a big exposure online. For me, his non-interactive animations are more about what games ought to be than what a lot of games are. The kind of indulgence which triggers all the soft spots of delicious wrongness in a way Reality just doesn't appreciate.
PBCBSF2006 is probably the most frenetic, violent, and fun game never made. Check out the horrible quality YouTube video after the break, or download the torrent and get seeding.
[Thanks, brad77]

This video's awesome. I love the small reference to The Big Lebowski, too! Makes me wonder if he'll make this into some flash game, too!

My brain hurts.

Any game with a John Goodman and Christopher Walken summon = awesome.
chris @ Apr 26th 2006 3:24PM
Im not sure I was able to comprehend the amount of awesomeness in that.
sam @ Apr 26th 2006 3:27PM
Wow. Somebody give this guy a job making games for me to play. This makes me want to fire up Final Fight. And it's so unashamedly gory, yet never forgetting to be fun! I hope Hillary Clinton starts growing this game as a tumor. Right on her forehead. That would be awesome.
Snurp @ Apr 26th 2006 3:38PM
Makes one teary-eyed.

As I read "incredible piece of video-game infused animation" I am thinking: 'yeah, whatever'. I even wanted to hate it just a little...
But WOW, amazing job Paul Robertson. This is by far one of the coolest things I have seen in a very long time. Definately brought me back.
Yes it is worth seeing, and do yourself a favor... watch it in the higher res quicktime/torrent format, not the youtube.

Awww, you didn't believe me jaemz? At least I've got you convinced now! Huzzah!
I'd love to see something even higher-res... alas.
logikil @ Apr 26th 2006 4:04PM
The Chun Li and Megaman based squids in the first video were just too damn cool. Gory and yet satifyingly humorous. Kudos man. That kicked butt.
jp @ Apr 26th 2006 4:06PM
simply awsome. thats way beat them-up games should be ;)
It's could be a trailer to a game :D
Hoffy @ Apr 26th 2006 4:20PM
Why, oh why can't this be a real game?
And oh my God, the pregnant women who's swollen bellys explode into zombie babies??
I need.
Clay @ Apr 26th 2006 5:22PM
I had the pleasure of finding this artist before he became big; definitely quite a talented fellow.
Cableguy @ Apr 26th 2006 6:41PM
It's the beautiful love child of Metal Slug & River City Ransom. Simply amazing. I'd love to know what he animated this with. The sprite design is flawless - FLAWLESS!
I really wouldn't be shocked to see an actual game of this. Internet memes do funny things like that.
Babylonian @ Apr 26th 2006 6:47PM
After reading his name, all I could think of was:
HIS NAME IS PAUL ROBERTSON.
HIS NAME IS PAUL ROBERTSON.
HIS NAME IS PAUL ROBERTSON.
HIS NAME IS PAUL ROBERTSON.
HIS NAME IS PAUL ROBERTSON.
Seriously, just switch them and you've got a name that Fight Club would've done to what South Park did to Kennies worldwide.

I'm putting a pre-emptive $10 bounty, payable to whomever makes the first negative comment posted about this game when/if someone actually tries to make it.
"zOMG teh contrls r horrible, ripoff of alien hominid, who cares
and old news, joystik i saw this on digg a year and a half ago lame"
Zsavior @ Apr 26th 2006 6:49PM
First time in my entire life I wanted to see the hipster/scene kid beat somebody up rather than get beat up. Awesome video, pregnant mothers exploding with zombie babies, if it wasn't 2d I would be scarred for life.

God, that brad77 is a cool dude.

Paul has worked on a few 2d games for GBA, this is a bit of a rebellion against having to do licenced crap all the time :)
Ryuukuro @ Apr 26th 2006 10:21PM
Okay, some of this stuff in general is way too sick for me to ever want in a game (the pregnant women with attack babies? Ugh!) but in general if this were real I would play it.
Pirate Baby is love.
Sizer @ Apr 26th 2006 10:58PM
This looks like it would be completely tedious and awful to play if actually made - but it's sure fun to watch the 12 minute speed run.
Insomnia Bob @ Apr 27th 2006 1:38AM
I'd pay $50 bucks for this! THE MAN IS INSANE!
Did anyone else notice the cast of Predator came out and whupped some ass?
So many mish mashed pop culture references, I couldn't keep up with half of them. What was that bus? I don't even care. It's awesome.
It's absolutly mind boggling to think someone did this for FUN.
Smack042 @ Apr 27th 2006 3:46AM
Classic.
Eric Bostrom @ Apr 27th 2006 4:15AM
I sent this link in last friday with small write-up and you're just now getting around to posting it?
thanks brad77, power in numbers got this beauty posted (finally)
brad77 @ Apr 27th 2006 11:36AM
Thanks, Eric. I knew I couldn't be the only one. This one was too good to miss!
Dan @ Apr 27th 2006 12:24PM
I would pay approximately infinity dollars for an online-coop-enabled version of this on the Nintendo DS, or XBox Live Arcade. And if we can't have the online coop, I'll buy it anyway.
Someone get this man some startup capital!
Franklin @ Apr 27th 2006 5:53PM
Maybe the guys who made that Jack Thompson inspired "I'm O.K." game could turn this into a real game? (One can hope.)
William @ May 15th 2006 12:27AM
My only regret is that we never saw what Pirate Baby is capable of.

PIRATE BABY TSHIRT!
Just wanted to let you know that SelectParks has sponsored a Pirate Baby Tshirt. Paul gets artist royalties, (he's a buddy of mine). Don't be put off by the bad photos, the Tshirts are hot.

Game design that is not of the current publishers world. It's like Edvard Munch+Final Fight - with the ability to interject appropriate animations at any time. And it all works. First 12 minute video I've ever watched on the internet and wanted more of.
Somebody hire these guys quick. And give them autonomy please.
