To number 44:

According to my friend's dad, that's exactly the point. Think about it: You release a system with a really lame name, one that can be interpreted as something dirty, but can also clearly be clean, like the "Wii". So EVERYONE and their grandma is talking about it. Seriously, everyone I've told has gone on to tell at least two other people about it. It's just such big news, you know? Then, once everyone is aware of the console, they change the name to something cool, put it on the shelves, and BAM. It's insta-awesome.

Personally, I think we should all contact Nintendo from the official site and all ask them to change it. I mean, I'm used to it, but talking about my "Wii" to non-gamers is not bringing in any new fans.

Heck, I did it myself yesterday, and look what the response was:

"Hello,

I appreciate your taking the time to share your comments regarding the name of
our next home console. If you haven't yet had the opportunity, please go to the
news section of our website (www.nintendo.com/newsmain) to learn our feelings
about the name. Rest assured that your feedback will be forwarded to the
appropriate department for --FURTHER REVIEW--.

Thank you for your e-mail."

See the caps that I unprofessionally added there? There's still hope, Revolution fans. Hmm, I still think the "Nintendo Shift" was a great idea. It fits all their requirements and all: Short, explains gameplay, is COOL, etc...

Nintendo will be sued. Just like the WWF, now WWE was. Wii is an actual name a government is using. Check it out yourselves.

http://www.wii.gov.in/

The WWF (World Wildlife Fund) had their way with the then known as WWF (known then as the World Wrestling Federation)and forced the WWF to change to WWE. Maybe this will happen to Nintendo as well.

And for good measure, here's their disclaimer from their website...

All efforts have been made to make the information as accurate as possible, Wildlife Institute of India (WII) will not be responsible for any loss to any person or organization caused by inaccuracy in the information available on this Website. Any discrepancy found may be brought to the notice of WII.

Ok let's see...You hold a stick in your hand, wave it around, and say you are playing with your "Wii"...

I don't think this is going to work.

"Nintendo Revolution" had such a nice ring to it. Aside from the obvious dirty connotations, "Nintendo Wii" literally feels like crap coming off the tongue, and it sounds like some failure prototype. When you say "Wii" it contorts the mouth and cheek muscles to such a degree, that you don't want to say it again.

There is also no balance in syllables. "Nintendo" has three syllables, "Wii" only one. You have to have a short pause in between words, and In the English language, to pause between 3 syllables and 1 syllable is unnatural and annoying. Try it yourself.

I think it will be easier for the Japanese to accept this name than it will for gamers in the US.

they are compleatly missing the point with "wii" in an interveiw i read a few days ago they said "google is not a word but the public is ok with that" in japan they might not say wii often its not a word. but wii in english is used daily. its the worst name i have ever seen. its also hard to let your slef say wii because. the word we is not spelt wii and its like forcing youslef to unlearn english.

Project Reality -> Ultra 64 -> Nintendo 64
Nintendo Revolution -> Nintendo Wii

The N64 change wasn't too bad, but going from Revolution to wii?

I just wanna clear things up here!
The PSP has sold more than 17.3 million units, while the Nintendo DS has sold only 15.64 million units.
That mean that the PSP has sold MORE! And just a second camparison... the top selling game for each system is GTA: Liberty City Stories (PSP) + Nintendogs (DS).
A mature/ adult targeted game vs a cute/ puppy game?
Who do you think Nintendo is targeting?
and the Wii is a joke... it's supposed to be made to bring people together, but anyone caught with this gay system will have no friends!

Be smart put your money into a system that actually is for people above the age of 8. Get a PS3 or a XBOX.
