Don't tell me people still buy consoles depending on a name. I believe they missed Apple's point: the i goes at the beginning, not at the end.

Jokes apart, I (and I bet real gamers) don't care how the console is named.

I was thinking some names up this morning.

The Nintendo...

* Tropical Equator
* Goomba Smasher Mark V
* StarRoad!
* Console of HiDef's Bane
* The Other
* Miyamoto's Dream
* Koopa Killer Konsole
* Bloodline
* DNA
* TimeWarp

but again, the truth was stranger than fiction. Nintendo never dissapoints there.

Nintendo was found both brutally murdered on 27th April 2006. The bizarre incident occured in the Mushroom Kingdom, outside Princess Peach's castle with Nintendo villains, including the likes of Bowser, Ganondorf and Wario apparently allied with the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, drowning poor Nintendo in urine. Bowser was heard shouting 'MY WII IS MUCH MORE POWERFUL THAN THE REST OF YOURS BWHAHAAHHAH.'

When questioned about the incident, the villains replied:'We are tired of being constantly beaten by Nintendo heroes and by killing Nintendo with our 'wii' we can be sure to be rid of being beaten ever again!'

So there you have it guys, Nintendo's last stand in the home console market has now officially failed.

Well, that was unexpected. Why is it 'we' and not 'why'? Because there's more to the name than just the sound of it, there's the implication.

The name implies interactivity and cooperation. WE, together, not you, solitary. Remember, Nintendo is promoting casual games and gamers playing TOGETHER. Remember the controller video? Grandparents playing with grandkids; families playing together; couples playing together; friends PLAYING TOGETHER.

Want to sell to casual gamers? Revolution is NOT your name. We, on the other hand, is both simple, easy to remember and carries a message. PS/3 and Xbox 360 sounds much less organic to the ear. And Wii incorporating the rev controller into it's name? Pretty smart, imho. A few commercials prior to launch will seed that in consumers minds. It's UNIQUE. It's MEMORABLE and it's a SELLING POINT.

Nintendo is crazy, all right....Crazy like a Fox.

And If they don't rename I will continue to call it the revolution and put a sticker over the logo when I get the console ;)

I like it, the name by itself is nothing impressive, but with the logic behind it? I love it. It's unique, it's creative it sends a message beyond the usual system name and some number. Nintendo has always had a pentient for names (aside from the upgrade from nintendo to super nintendo).

"Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else."

If anyone can do that, it's Nintendo.

Exec #1: Wii? C'mon was Doo taken? Since you move the controller Doo would have been good.

Exec #2: Doo also means crap in some circles. Wii is inclusive like "Wii are the World".

Exec #1: Okay we will use Wii. Good thing Wii does not have a double meaning.

wow. I never saw that coming. Suprised it wasn't leaked ;)

It is a very bad name. I couldn't even "parse" it at first, didn't know how to read it. Still, by tommorow everyone will know of Wii and it will certainly get massive publicity because of it (moreso than a generic "xbox360").

Big N really should have researched better the western audiences reaction. Or at least just spelled it "WE".

How is "Wii" not confusing? When I first saw it I thought it must stand for something else like the PS2, or that somebody left the "k" out. This smacks of being too Japan-centric and ignoring the rest of the world. Anytime people are confused about a product's name is one more reason they will stay away. This is not how you go after "non-gamers". Show "Wii" to people who are not gamers and see what type of reaction you get. Blank stares or puzzlement.

Wow. And just when I was getting excited about getting this console they go and do something like this. Let's be realistic, sure you can go around trying to defend the name "Wii" to people, but if you're going to spend millions on a new console and dramatically change the accepted mode of interaction (via the more standard controller) with your systems games do you really want your loyal fanbase having to defend your system? Absolutely not!

Not only will this be a marketing fiasco if the name stays the same in the Western markets, but you can't tell me that Nintendo is gaining, honestly gaining, excitement (let alone any respect) for its next-gen platform by naming it "Wii".

I can see the headlines now, "Fans Eager To Get Their Hands On Nintendo's Wii." That's not marketing, that's just sad.

Hell, now I'm more psyched for the bad puns! But whatever, I'm not going to just say, "I'm not getting the system because the name is silly". And truly, the name cannot be described as anything other than "silly".

But whatever! Silly name or not, it'll still be amazingly fun.

Nintendo is trying to be all Apple hip .. out of all the console names (xbox360, ps3) Wii is the most artsy-fartsy .. almost foriegn much like the iPod when it first came out. People will instantly know that xbox360 and ps3s are sucessors to the previous generation ...but, 'Wii' tells people that Wii is something different.

Now, all they have to do is make 'Wii' as hip as 'iPod' and they're all set.

Wow, I didn't expect a wacky name like "Wii." It's a pretty interesting concept, but yea, it can be interpreted as something like "weeeeee!!!" or, like some other people have said, piss, or even something vulgar. I don't know if Nintendo considered that, but it is disappointing, nonetheless. Not too horrible, but disappointing. It will always be the Revolution to me. But I can't see myself going up to a cashier asking for a "Wii"...

"Wii" is pretty ridiculous, but let us not forget our history. The "gayest" name for a console, ever, E-V-E-R, is PlayStation.

We're all used to it now, but really stop and think about that name for a second. PlayStation? It's a fucking Tyco plastic slide that my little cousins play on in the backyard. You know, the bright red kind with the random tic-tac-toe game built into the top for no reason. And let us not forget the sad phrase "hey, wanna play PlayStation" that Sony forced upon the youth of America, causing them to further sound like morons. Play play. Thanks for that.

Anyway, my poin is that if "Wii" is almost as ridiculous as PlayStation, maybe it will be just as succesful. However, I think Nintendo should have just went for it and called it the Ninendo Big Black Cock (BBC). THAT's a fucking system right there. Yeah, your "360" is cool, but not as cool as my BIG BLACK COCK."

Guys it's just a name. It is kind of funny, but I think it falls right in line with what Nintendo is looking to do. They want to revolutionize the industry. Why not do it with an amazing controller and an interesting name. I mean at least they are showing some creativity. Was I the only one who knew that the Playstation 3 was next after the Playstation 2? I like a company to show that it has more up its sleeve than a re-used name.

Just as a sidenote of what product naming actually does. Anyone remember the Chevy NOVA. In spanish speaking countries the car BOMBED BIG TIME. Why? Because NOVA literally means "no-go" in spanish. Not a name you want a car to have... Anyway using a name that is can mean "urine" or male sexual organ is a pretty bad idea if the chevy nova is anything to learn from.
