Look, you either hang out with the nerd (Microsoft), the Gotti guido (Sony), or the cool stoner (Nintendo) while waving your arms around like a ninja in training with that new fangled nunchaku controller.

I, for one, welcome the Nintendo Wii. Me and my roach say, "Bring it on!"

Uh, look out!

Do people here actually laugh at pee jokes? I've been mulling over it awhile and I seriously cannot see piss humor actually causing a laugh. The only time may have been during the Boondocks, and it was funny because it was referred to as pissing, not 'weeing'. Nobody even says 'weeing'. 'Weeing' is far more lame a term than 'wii' and its pretty pathetic how amatuerish middle-america must be.

That's why I love living on the coast. Hooray for this godless land of intelligence! *High fives fellow scholars who don't laugh at pee jokes.*

I wrote: "The name is so ludicrous, people can't help themselves from talking about it."

Pikachelsea wrote: "Yeah, because that really worked for the Gizmondo and its utterly retarded name... O WAIT.

By that logic, they should really name it the Kool Krazy Klash (KKK), or maybe the Nintendo Buttmonkey Fartmachine. Oh man, so creative! So OUTRAGEOUS, you can't NOT buy one!"

Here are some comment counts on the wii: slashdot 884, Kotaku 155 (combined), 631 here at joystiq (combined), 262 at 1up, etc...

Gizmondo never generated this kind of buzz this quickly for any one reason. Not for a silly name, not for a crashed ferrari. As for the Gizmondo name... Bad, yes. Ludicrous, no.

When I first heard the news I thought that "Wii" was pronounced "why". So I was like, whi what? and, whi indeed. and, whi are they doing this. I was like, is this the japanese name as in "why-eye"? When I found out that it was pronounced "wee", I just couldn't stop repeating: "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!", "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!", "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!", "weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!"!!!!!!!

I like the name, and I think its a great one; simple but poignant.

However, one universal characteristic of gamers is that we still laugh at poo-poo caca stuff.

Even if you don't connect the name wii to the obvious "piss" jokes that come to mind right off the bat, the name is stupid. OMG it is so stupid!

I was actually considering buying a Nintendo Revolution to go along with my Xbox 360 (I purchased a GameCube with my Xbox). My brother-in-laws and friends would never let me hear the end of it if I told them I was bringing my Wii over to play some games. Count me out now. Being in marketing professionally, I can tell you with CERTAINTY that a name is the first thing to properly promoting a product. If the name flops, the product WILL flop. It's as simple as that.

Just think about the target audience? You are talking about 12-24 year old boys/men! Will the name be important to them? YES! Will they associate Wii with stupid potty jokes? YES!!! Of course!

If they keep the name Wii on this system, it will be about as popular as E.T. The Extraterrestrial was for the Atari 2600. I guarantee it!

The psp has just and many urinal conjugations as the Wii. This reminds me of the Glazier take over of Manchester United. All the 'fans' rioted, burnt their shirts, said they would never support the club, start their own etc. months on, they are all sat in the stands once more. Maybe they should have called it Hysteria, because thats what it's causing.

I have absolutely no confidence in Nintendo's abiliy to create and market a successful home console in the United States. In the previous two generations a new company has not only entered the market, but entered the market -and- beaten Nintendo in terms of third party support and installed systems.

Nintendo always shoots themselves in the foot, be it in regards to storage medium, online play, case design or commercial advertisements. Nintendo systems sell well DESPITE Nintendo's bad choices, simply because they make superior games.

No one should kid themselves, 'Wii' is a mistake. Nintendo makes glaring mistakes and they do it all the time.

It shows that Nintendo is still a Japan centered company.
"W" is pronounced - Daburu-Yuu which sounds like "Double" which is an imported english word in Japanese.
"ii" means good (THe verb yoi).

So in Japanese it is a play on"
Double-Good or Twice-as-good or Super Good (Mechakucha ii)

In english it sucks or should I say pees?

Wii's double "I's" are meant to represent the unit's unique controller, which is broken into two parts. But the word itself is meant to conjure up a sense of inclusiveness.

"It's really not about you or me," said the statement. "It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."

The new console's name is part of a broader strategy by Nintendo to introduce video games to a bigger audience.

"Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak," the statement read. "No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii."

What is wrong with you people...? Honestly does it matter what name they took the press... those who are hating would still find something to be pissed about. I for one watched the intro clip at Nintendo site, thought about it (They are definitely following Mac style and naming convention "IPOD" "NANO" for example both of which are very successful products. I am sure some did say the names for Apple portable player were stupid… once again look at the success and intuitive use) and it makes sense to me.

The bottom line is the games. It could have the best, must powerful name in the world but if the games aren't fun and immersive then who cares that name it has. Look at Xbox360 for example...I have friends and know other people that are taking back the 360 due to sub par games and hardware problems. Once again it’s the games and how you play them is really the important issue here and should be what we are looking forward to at E3.

Ok, now...all you little cry babies need to get over your little childish thoughts of pennises and piss and start listening to nintendo! They have got it under control, and they have their reasons. So stop with the stupid jokes, suck it up, and grow up.

I personally like the name, it's different than everything else and it confuses the shit out of even the most loyal nintendo fanboys among us. I remember when Yahoo came out...I was like WTF? Maybe this time around, it would help to be a little open-minded.

Errata to #76

But Manning says that Wii doesn’t really convey any of those things, adding that anytime a company starts explaining their brand name, it’s a bad sign.

“The biggest key to figuring out it’s a bad name is when they explain it,” he said. “You don’t have to explain a good name, you have to explain a bad name.”

Nintendo's new product: The Wii ... You have to be kidding me.

I do see the initial thought behind the name, unique, easy to remember & name+logo all in one thingy. But Wii? Couldn't Nintendo remember the old saying "Whats in a name ... Everything." How about the Zii or the Vii. Why Wii? I personally don't understand the marketing strategy behind this one.

I was hyped about the Revolution. I represented a new era in gaming ... Changing the way gaming is done. Showing a clear direction for the console. The next generation in gaming ... The Revolution!

I can see if this is a attention grabbing trick for Nintendo ... Get everyone talking & laughing then E3 comes and Bam!!! New name!!! Smart move. But if the name sticks, what is the point?

My final point is, "Where is Wii going?" Umm ... wii are going to the store to pickup a few things? Lets go and play with my new wii? Wii were tired & stoned so wii couldn't come up with a decent name? "Wii" easier for the Japanese to say than "Revolution"?

(To borrow Ebonic slang) Wii out!

Most of us agree the name is dumb... but what if it is just for some viral marketing? (I know it's far fetched, but hear me out.) Watch the intro video on Nintendo's site - the animation and render is CRAP. The objects, though they are moving and bouncing letter "i"s are not even smoothed out properly. It is certainly not a clean and finshed piece of work I would expect for something as ...interesting(?) and dare I say, ballsy of Nintendo to do. Wii sucks just the same though fake or real.

All kidding aside, its still a powerful system and will no doubt have awesome games and an innovative controller. Its Nintendo! They know how to do games, which should be the main selling point.
..
...
....
Except, of course, they really don't know how to name a console. I believe thats the point here. Not whether the console will succeed or not, but if the name sucks. There will be pee jokes. Many pee jokes. I announced the name on one of my message boards and the members (who will still buy it, btw) thought the name was insanely stupid. Nintendo makes good systems. Their naming practices are not so good.
The thing Nintendo should worry about is the standards and practices for TV. Since its pronounced "we", competitors can have a field day making some raunchy pee jokes in their ads.
