"Revolution is an awful name."

YES. I can understand perfectly why people don't like Wii (even though I'm pretty much indifferent about it myself), but saying that Nintendo should just market it as Revolution is just stupid. A name like Revolution would be totally meaningless to Nintendo's new non-gamer demographic.

O.K. to all of you, stop bashing Joystiq. So what they are biased toward that Wii name. They ARE entitled to their own opinion, just like you are. And if you don't like what Joystiq has to say about Wii, go find a "Wii lovers" site.

Honestly, I hate Wii. I think it'll destroy Nintendo. The only reason I'm still buying it is cuz after Nintendo loses the market and goes bankrupt, i'll have something to show my grandkids, 80 years from now, how Nintendo failed.

I hated wii at first, until I saw it in context.

iPod, Vaio, Wii, iRiver, Viiv, etc.

As long as you stay away from urine, it really isn't that bad a name for an electronic device.

I"m not psyched about it, or anything. I think Revolution is a much more powerful moniker. But coming out and saying it will be named Revolution after all wouldn't really be news at all, and we'd all go on with our lives.

I think that all of the people who feel that Wii is a bad name because its slang for reliveing yourself is childish. Once you mature , you dont say "Hey guys i'll be right back, im going to take a wee." Or you shouldn't, I agree with maybe the european side of the world, but... Wii - wee. (homophones people)

"It's just a really controversial choice that was most likely handed down from Japan. The US marketers have to do with it what they can because decisions are made by Nintendo HQ elsewhere."

This is emabarrissingly U.S.centric. Dork.

I cannot believe how you people consider "wee" to be an offensive word. Piss is piss. "Wee" is said by little kids. Anyone over 12 (at least here in North America, but probably in the UK too) NEVER uses that word. And what, you guys think that a few 8-year-olds are gonna make fun of the name so much that it fails? That they're gonna influence teenagers and adults not to buy the thing just because it sounds like "wee"? I can bet you that if you asked a mature adult here about what they think of when they hear the name "Wii" they would never even think of the child's word for piss.

You guys are making an enormously big deal of a stupid word that little kiddies use, which NO MATURE PERSON EVEN USES.

Goddamnit.

Also in response to everyone who feels this is a childish name. I'm looking forward to the Ford Cootie. C'mon, why would you make a name that is so easy to assault and make fun at its expense. There are hundreds of other names that could have been used that would have been much easier to market.
Nintendo's marketing team = lame

everybody was a child once. the logo works, the pronunciation doesn't. if you speak english, you understand wii to sounds like either urine or tiny or both. i mean, it's a wii system alright, and the wiimotes will be fun to use, so it works with those two puns aptly. however, it's still attatched to those phrases almost in english. this was a decision made in the heart of japan with the same furvor that decided to OK ROB. upshot: it's also a name who's domain would probably be available, which is important in this net world... RS WAS RIGHT THERE GODDAMN YOU NINTENDO. IT WOULD HAVE FIT WITH DS SOOOO WELL. SOOOOO DAMN WELL!

If any of you don't buy it because of it's name, you aren't gamers. To non-gamers, maybe they will take notice for at least a second. Many people in this world don't give a flying wii about "playstation" "nintendo" "gamecube" or "xbox". They don't care that Playstation 3 will be released soon. Maybe "wii" will at least get in the minds of some of these people and help brand recognition. Maybe some will investigate further. Who knows. But the name will do something, maybe good, maybe bad. But a "traditional" name wouldn't do anything and Nintendo's strategy this time around is to be as different as possible. They aren't taking the MS strategy of "make some small changes and hope for drasticly different results". If Nintendo took this path, we would be in the same position 10 years from now. Sony on top and then Nintendo and MS at the bottom.

The name is weird, I would prefer a more traditional name for a gaming system, but in the end it doesn't matter to me what it's called. If the system has good games, then it is worth buying.

Nintendo has always been king of bad names that are everlasting. They have been unoriginal and nondescriptive since they entered the console gaming world; The Nintendo Entertainment System? how clever, using their name and saying its entertaining.

Now think some years later, where they add Super to the name, good job, more orignality. Littered through that time and afterwards are things like Game Boy or Virtual Boy, what unclever stupid names.

Then we get into the age of codenames, Ultra64, Dolphin, Revolution. All pretty much undescriptive except for the latter. What we got was Nintendo 64, wow, Gamecube, and now Wii. Nintendo has no clue how to make good names for their systems, but it hasnt affected their product at all. What affected their product most is their high developing costs and crappy marketing, also their attention to perfection in all their A class games, which hurts and helps recover them all the same.

The name Wii is hard to swallow but remember, Nintendo is horrible at making console names, and has always been, but the reason we buy the systems is games not names, like its been said countless times before.

What the hell is an Xbox or a Playstation? What crappy undescriptive names, but do they sell, yes and why? Well, I have no idea.

Ok you are obviously some kind of f***ed up conspiracy theorist. So are you trying to say that Chi rho are not the first 2 letters of the greek christ? Or that christ wasn't crucified, it was some other guy?
As for it not being medieval:
http://employees.oneonta.edu/farberas/arth/Images/109images/Insular/kells/chi_rho_large.jpg
Thats a page from the book of kells, a medieval irish book of psalms, and theres chi rho, refering to jesus christ. And whats your point on the different versions of the name jesus? There are lots od derivative names. Gues where the name christopher came from?

By those standards, PS# (or even worse, PSP) is a terrible name for a console as well, as it is polysyllabic any way you pronounce it. XBOX? Who the fuck wants a box? "Hey, let's go play with my box." Sounds pretty childish to me. Ah, but with an X in front of it, all of a sudden it's hip and modern! They might as well have called it iBox.

I can't think of any one console that has had a good name, save the Nintedo Entertainment System (since putting the "Super" in front of it is pretty bogus). That name makes some fucking sense. Screw "realists" and "fanboys", I say they should go read some Romeo and Juliet. There's one line in particular that should get their attention.

Anyway, the fact that there's (or was) a Gizmondo in the world makes "Wii" make sense any day.

I'm a bit surprised not to see a lot of theories regarding Wii being a title for the Asian market. I think most of us remember that the NES and SNES were called Famicon and Super Famicon in Japan.

Also, I wouldn't be surprised to see Nintendo revealing a new name at E3 for the western countries. I'm not saying that they will. I'm just pointing out that such a thing is far from impossible.

Remember the Xbox "Duke" controller? When Microsoft unveiled their console in the US, the backlash in Japan was instantaneous. Without hesitation, MS put together what is not called the "S" controller. Most people consider it a massive improvement.

Nintendo still has enough time to fix this...if they care to.

PS3 and Xbos 360 use all this extra processing power to create more realistic fantasies to satisfy peoples whose realities sO LaME that they need 1080P on a 52inch LCD screen to compensate.
Wii is a Fun name for Normal people who buy consoles for Fun!!! (Not to compensate for a lack of an exciting reality.)
