Ubisoft Montreal
(Splinter Cell & Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time) is currently developing its first
PlayStation 3 title, Assassin's Creed. Set in the midst of the Third Crusade, players will become Altair, a
member of the Assassins, and must strike both sides of the conflict to preserve the Holy Land. A teaser, which is on
par with other suspicious PS3 trailers, has been posted on the official website ... That can't be the 'actual' game! Of course not,
it's pre-rendered, silly.Ubisoft hopes to turn Assassin's Creed into a full-fledged franchise. This first installment will make its debut next week at E3. It's worth noting that the game has not yet been concept approved by Sony.
Update: Assassin's Creed (or 'Project Assassin,' as it was formerly titled) was also announced for the Xbox 360 at X05. Despite 1Up's article, and until further notice, the game should not be considered a PS3 exclusive.

Somewhat off topic, are the final devkits out for the PS3 yet? If not, what kind of hardware would this video be running on?

A computer or a DVD player. It is a pre-rendered movie.

"Ubisoft is excited to have Assassin’s Creed come to the PS3."
Seems odd. It sounds like PS3 is the main platform, or perhaps timed exclusive.

Harsh, but fair :-D
Did we ever decide if being able to rewind a sequence and move the camera around counts as "real-time?" Call it a fool's guess, but methinks we'll be hearing that term alot in the next 11 days and beyond.

MGS4 did not look as good as most parts of this trailer, but then this trailer is indeed prerendered target footage, even if it is using in-game assets, as an Ubi Rep on IGN claims.

*THIS* trailer is still low-def. I waited how many months before somebody was able to get an HD version that wasn't being streamed from Japan. And what did we get when we saw it under a microscope? Pop-ins (which Sony had publicly criticized Microsoft for, perhaps rightly so ala Halo 2) and harsh, straight edges.
See for yourself:

Me? I'm a cynic. I don't like it when a company tells me they will release a product in Spring of 2006 and then fails to deliver on that. I don't like it when a company continues to put up "conceptual design" next to their controller and console. They'd have to do something pretty impressive next week to win me back.

Having said that, the Tech demo was impressive. They use a great number of tricks to improve the image. light blooms and HRD lighting soften the textures and jaggies as does the depth-of-field blurring.
Hideo Kojima, the game’s creator, has now gone on record saying that the Xbox 360 is capable of running the PS3's Metal Gear Solid 4 interactive presentation.

"Despite the PlayStation 3 propaganda on display throughout the demo, Kojima's comments reaffirm many gamers' opinions that the two next-gen consoles aren't separated by much in terms of sheer graphical power. Today's lesson: Don't be a victim of hype."
Sony is running a classic campaign. They aren’t showing their hand with the PS3. Instead, they present a few carefully selected pre-rendered videos, tech demos and a lot of talk about how powerful the system is. Sony’s hope is that people don’t buy the Xbox 360 and wait a year for the PS3. They know that if they showed off real gameplay footage, people could compare it directly to the Xbox 360 and see that there is little-to-no difference. Instead, they allude to the power and mystery of the system knowing imagination is a force much more powerful than any screen shot. They pulled similar moves with the launch of the PS2.
Dreamcast's demise is a testament to the Sony hype machine.
