Disney announces new DS exclusive

Buena Vista Games (Disney) announced late yesterday an exclusive "anime-inspired action/role playing game" for Nintendo's DS handheld. The title is said to be one of few original (or non Micky related) properties released by the company in addition to and hot off the heels of Kingdom Hearts II success for the PS2.
From the press release: "Spectrobes is infused with the edgy, highly stylized look and feel of Japanese anime and manga, and uniquely combines original characters, a compelling story and breakthrough gameplay. [The game] allows players to excavate, train and battle with nearly 500 unique creatures -- utilizing every interactive feature of the Nintendo DS."

In my opinion, this looks to be a something that has all of the ingredients to make a mainstream cookie cutter video game. GO INOVATION!

You have grammatical errors in the first paragraph, just a heads up.

"uniquely combines original characters, a compelling story and breakthrough gameplay."
Because nobody's EVAR combined those three before.

Honestly, though, guys. If you were trying to pitch your game, isn't that what you would say? XD Even if I didn't do all that shit, I probably wouldn't say "This game has nothing new!" :P

Sounds like they're combining pokemonitization with DS stylus control. I'm sure it's really revolutionary to try collecting hundreds of little creatures and battling them, but it's a past craze.

"Spectrobes is infused with the edgy, highly stylized look and feel of Japanese anime and manga,"
Translation: "Spectrobes has the cliche, tired, identical-looking anime drawing style which features characters that are virtually identical except for their hair and clothing, but which inexplicably appeals to teenaged boys and girls no matter how many times the style is recycled and repackaged."

Spectrobes = PokemonDS

Well wasn't Anime based off Disney's art style? I'm sure I read that at Disney Land Paris. If true then Disney are basing a game off their old art style.

POKEYMON?? [/cosby]
I think I've heard of a couple disney-made games being decent, some racers or what not... this coupled with meteos: disney edition is interesting though

I'll wait until I see it but this sounds so much like a Pokemon/Yu-gi-oh rip off its not even funny. They need to stick to the combine-Disney-with-incongruent-franchise formula like Kingdom Hearts and create Disney vs. Street Fighter.

I played a very early build of this game last summer, and I have to say that I had a great time tinkering with it. The excavation that is mentioned in the article is pretty cool on the DS touchscreen. And since it's been a year since I've seen it, my guess is that it's even better now.
