Sega announces PS3 exclusive Full Auto 2
The
latest in Sega's uninterrupted stream of announcements leading up to E3 is this: Full Auto -- the
super-mega-smash hit for Xbox 360 that people just can't get enough of -- is finally going to get a sequel.
Xbox 360 Fanboys need not apply, however...this round it's PS3 only. Yup, the game that proved there is a way to add automatic weapons and fast cars and make it not fun is gearing up for a second outing. Perhaps because 360 gamers didn't buy what they were selling before, Sega went all third-grader on them saying, "the tremendous power of Sony's PLAYSTATION 3 console makes this sequel truly the next generation of combat racing." Uh, okay. Sure? What was Full Auto one then, pray tell? Less than three months after it came out and Sega's already calling their next-gen attempt last-gen.
Pssst. Guys! If you're convinced that the world needs another combat racing game so soon, and that you're the ones to deliver it, and that the PS3 will allow you to realize your real next-gen development dreams, that's cool. Just don't expect us to care.

Full Auto had definite potential. It still does. It was just rushed and on a buggy console, which was also rushed. I do think it could turn into a quality franchise. Take away Oblivion (and GRAW, if you can put up with all the glitches) and what do you have on the 360 in terms of really fun, high quality, non-arcade games? Not much. Almost every single game has been a disappointment. That includes Full Auto, which was a miserable letdown. But I think Sega realized it was onto something and they're going to get it right next time, on a more powerful console that is hopefully less glitchy and likely to break a month after you buy the thing. One can hope, right?
modeps @ May 2nd 2006 12:05PM
FA was just garbage. You guys are absolutely correct. Who the hell cares if the sequel isnt available on the 360? I sure as hell dont. I may miss the ice-skating cars though... wait, no... no I wont.
dsub @ May 2nd 2006 12:05PM
while I hate to see the PS3 get an exclusive that the 360 had, I honestly do not care. This is the kind of game that will spend one outing on 360, one outing on PS3, and then will either never see another sequel (one can only hope) or become a cross-platform game. I'm sorry, but making this game a console exclusive to PS3 is like announcing that your going to exclusively release dog shit in a bag for the PS3, and it's going to be so real that you'll be able to smell the turds. No one cares.
I really don't see how this game got the reviews that it did. EGM gave it 7's and 8's. I played the demo for 2 minutes and erased it from my 360's HDD. Whatever. Car combat has just been lame ever since the yearly revisions of Twisted Metal. Vigilante 8 was good too, but when you combine it with racing like this, it just sucks. I liked the deathmatch format of TM and V8 better.
kruderand @ May 2nd 2006 12:06PM
According to here:
http://www.xboxic.com/news/790
It may just be a port of the 360 game, with an exclusive mode added to it. Of course, the link is an xbox site, so who knows.
LunarDuality @ May 2nd 2006 12:09PM
Fanboy comments aside (sloopydrew...for shame), Full Auto just didn't have the framerate to support it's massive destruction. That and a bunch of horrible fall through the environment bugs. And that is a sign of bad coding, *not* a bad console. Oh, and it also sounds like they are adding all the gametypes and multiplayer options that *should* have made it into the first version. Ho hum.
But I also find this amusing (from the press release):
"This title is not yet concept approved by Sony Computer Entertainment America."
Fred @ May 2nd 2006 12:11PM
"Yup, the game that proved there is a way to add automatic weapons and fast cars and make it not fun is gearing up for a second outing."
Priceless.
LunarDuality @ May 2nd 2006 12:12PM
Also amusing (damn no editing!) is the fact that I had much more fun playing Racing Gears Advance for the GBA than I did playing this game. I guess graphics aren't everything, even when you crave vehicular destruction...
dsub @ May 2nd 2006 12:13PM
sloopydrew:
Full Auto was obviously rushed, but it has nothing to do with the 360. Any glitch in a game comes from the developers not taking there time to smooth out the game. Full Auto was rushed because Sega saw an opportunity to release a game on the 360 at a point when there had been a drought of new releases in hopes that gamers would scoop it up just because there weren't any other games coming out.
That is the same thing they are going with the PS3 version. I expect this game to come out on PS3 near the launch, just so Sega can pick up some decent sales on a game while the PS3's library is still small. If this game were to come out on 360 also next year, no one would buy it, and Sega knows that. I guarantee the PS3 version will be nothing more than the 360 version with some new tracks and some new cars. Sega will make it for the PS3 because they can sell it for $60 as a launch title, but games like Full Auto will quickly be forgotten within 6 months, only to be remembered as a half-assed launch title, both on the PS3 and 360.

I thought all the thugs who get off exclusively on over the top carsexplosion were sitting pretty in the xbox demographic...
I just hope "Thugsploitation" games don't encroach so much on the industry that it cheapens system launches because developers try to make a fast buck thinking they are making a must have game.
Is it a business? Yeah, but games like this make the people who work, play and live this industry look like complete cave mongers, especially when they are terrible (25 to Life comes to mind). When I walk into games stores now I am embarrased at what GameStop is telling me is the HOT titles they think I want to own...
Did games like this exist before? Yeah, but they weren't being made with such extreme disregard for our minds (187 Ride or Die). When games were violent and had insane explosions in the "Bit" days, there was such little realism that the implied images and scenarios still came down to core elements of avoiding obstacles and getting the goal, score, or level complete... Your brain was being worked in the same ways in contra as it was in mario. The same in spy hunter as it was in pac-man. Now it seems to impress a lifestyle upon the gamer, (Getting Up) it is no longer innocent.
Are our brains still worked? Yeah, but we are more inclined to identify with a game's fantasy world when 50 Cent, Snoop Dogg, or Marc Ecko are marketing towards us through our in game actions.
I've kind of gone on about this more than I planned.
To be clear, the Midnight Club series of games falls into this edgy launch title category... and the series still blows.

"Fanboy comments aside (sloopydrew...for shame)"
I've had 2 360's break on me. 2 well-ventilated, properly cared for 360's. IGN reports 10 out of 20 of their office 360's have already broken. One 360 game after another has a patch, is getting a patch, or needs a patch. Are you honestly telling me the console wasn't rushed and the games weren't rushed for said console? I don't think making that statement and then explaining why I think Full Auto could still be a good franchise is even remotely "fanboy" behavior.
I own every last-gen console. I'll own every next-gen console. But I'll call a spade a spade. The 360 could still turn into a great console, but it most definitely didn't start as one.
My point was simply that, considering almost every game on the console has been more or less disappointing -- especially pre-Oblivion games like Full Auto -- the fact that Full Auto wasn't that great a game (wasn't even a good game, actually) doesn't mean that it couldn't turn into a good franchise. On the PS3 OR the 360 (or the Wii, for that matter).
Sense @ May 2nd 2006 12:23PM
Check out the official site for the first Full Auto, it's misleading as hell:
http://www.sega.com/games/game_temp.php?game=fullauto
It's got all these "awards" most of which were from E3 when people still thought the game would be cool. The best part is the statement that Official Xbox Magazine gave the game a 5 out of 5. OXM grades on a scale of 10...
Derbeste @ May 2nd 2006 12:25PM
Seriously...if we don't care....why is this story here?
Talk about an oxymoron....emphasis on the moron.
murph @ May 2nd 2006 12:28PM
Full Auto also was one of the first X360 titles to be released after the "launch window". us X360 owners were jonesin' for ANY game to play at that point. Is Sega going with the same marketing plan this time?
if Full Auto came out in March (GRAW, Oblivion, Burnout, etc.) about 5 people would have bought this game. i rented it from Gamefly...for about a week until I sent it back for Fight Night 3.
C. Grant @ May 2nd 2006 12:31PM
Hi Derbeste. You sound like a nice guy. There is a marked difference between not caring about the game and not caring about why they're making it. As chroniclers of the gaming industry, it behooves us to mention the goings on of the day. As gamers, we could care less about some of it. Take this for example.
Thanks for the troll. Please come again (or don't).
jaemz @ May 2nd 2006 12:34PM
I hear ya Sloopydrew... the early adoptors basically pay though the nose to be beta testers. I wouldn't have it any other way.
As for SEGA, they lost what little respect I had for them when they sold SEGA Sports. That page you showed, Sense, just proves they not to be trusted.
Pseudo Interactive, they are just a young Canadian company looking to make some bucks in whatever market they can. I don't blame them... maybe someday they will make decent games.
Derbeste @ May 2nd 2006 12:36PM
You're perfectly aloud to think I'm a troll for disagreeing with you. As a poster, you're aloud to neg me too. I applaud you for sticking up for yourself.
But don't think that that a "minus star on the internet" will really bother me or will deter my opinions either.
I thought the comment was controdictory and I was NOT the only one to point it out. And if you'd bother to read the posts I've put in other topics, I'd think you'd know I try my best to contribute.

Word of warning, save you money and buy PGR3 or NFS instead.
I won a copy of Full Auto and played it for all of two hours before I was bored out of my skull. I kept hoping it would get better after I unlocked more cars, unfortunately all the cars drove like hovercrafts and even the multiplayer was boring. I think it was a fun concept that was very poorly executed. Not really the best exclusive title, so let the other consoles have it, and I usually love SEGA titles. For me, the only good thing about Full Auto is I got a ton for it when I traded it in. I know I'm in the minority here, but I'd love to see a next-gen Wreckless sequel.
Sloopydrew - (off topic) While I still check out the Juicy Cerebellum once a month to see if there is something new (never is though), Alex peaked about eight years ago and the site has just been getting more and more pathetic as time goes on. IMO, I was following the highly critical tone of Gratn. Grant was VERY critical, and a bit nasty to SEGA and I thought since he could clearly dish it out, that he could take it too.
It seems I was wrong.
My point was that his comment was seemingly an Oxymoron or a paradox.
He says we shouldn't care, but then informs us all about it. So then why were WE supposed to care?
His clarification in response to my original post cleared it up a little bit, but his OP was still ambiguous.

I was a massive SF Rush fan, so I was totally pumped about Full Auto. Until I tried the demo. Thank you, thank you, thank you Microsoft for having Demo's in the marketplace. It saved me 50$.
I mean, it was obvious to me within SECONDS that Full Auto sucked. The weirdest physics of any game, awful controls, weird acceleration / brake ratios, awful modeling, crap courses, weird redraw issues, overall flickering, framerate issues, awful weapons...
I mean, to me it looked like someone took the Serious Sam engine, spent 8 weeks making a demo game and just plopped it out there.
Craziness.
So yeah, PS3 owners, enjoy. Even if they fix the framerate / bugginess issues, it's still a crap game.

Glitchy Console?
I dunno, mine works just fine. Early Adoption is a doubble edged sword. Patched games is nothing. You own a sega Dreamcast, so if you remember the dreamcast launch, there were games you'd buy that just plain didn't work. Like how I went through 3 copies of Sonic Adventure. I am one of those folks who dosen't see the 360 haveing a higher failure rate then any electronic device before it, espically game consoles.
As for Rushed games... I don't disagree with you there. Again.. Early Adoption is a doubble eged sword. And yes the ability to patch has allowed the devs ample ability to rush the product out the door.
I played the Full Auto Demo.. and yeah, i kept hopeing that it was a sample of an unfinished game. Espically after the consistant bragging about the 60 FPS gameplay... It was a cool concept. And who knows, Like Ridge Racer 7, Sega might actually TRY on this game.
RR6 is the much more dissapointing one. RR6 had so little effort put into it.. it could have been an incredible game.
Domingo @ May 2nd 2006 3:01PM
I bought Full Auto, I actually even completely won the game (which does NOTHING, by the way) and I can verify that it's so-so at best. It's sort-of fun for a few days, but it's something I'll likely never play again.
The idea of the game is a good one, but the problem is the execution. Beyond the framerate chugging, there's no racing depth. It's like playing a dumbed-down version of Burnout. You can careen into almost anything with no worries except being "pushed" where you're not necessarily wanting to go. The AI is rubber-band at it's worst, so you can mess up constantly with no worries until the final lap.
They make a big deal about having all of these wonderful weapon combinations, but the fact is that there's nothing better than the normal machineguns that are powered up all the way. Nothing else is even close.
It's a game that could be great, however, it's only on paper. If you really look at what would've make Full Auto good, you end up conceptualizing Burnout with weapons.
If they're making this game ANYTHING like the 360 version, it's going to be fun for a weekend and then you'll sell it used or return it to the rental shop.
Shabran @ May 2nd 2006 3:55PM
I agree with most of the people who are making comments about FULL AUTO (some of you are not)... I live in London and I remember being excited about this game because of all the destruction thinking that it might be on par with BURNOUT (Man was i wrong) but all I got to play was a game that was SLOW (emphasised) and jus not fun....
This is what developers need 2 do they need to look at previous games in the genre and build upon them (unless they purposfully want to make a unique game). Pointless making a game that has all the necessary elements of a game that everyone loves...
Take RPGs for example if a game had no sidequests but had the character building aspect ect it would seem off because something is missing because every RPG (or at least how they have grown) must have sidequests to build the character and to get to know them better
But any way my point is that FULL AUTO should of looked at past racing games and then built upon those

And IMO, the Juicy Cerebellum did peak early. The site used to have a wider variety of articles, not just movie reviews. "Alex on Juicy Cerebellum has a very public vendetta against MicroSoft and claims to have sold his Xbox 360. You (Sloopydrew) claim to be non-biased, and own a Xbox 360. Which is it?"
I personally consider Microsoft to be one of the worst companies ever created. Being the hypocritical consumer that I am, I will buy a console that I enjoy.
I really, really liked the original Xbox, and I am all about the games, and I thought the games were great on that system. So I was eager for the 360. I was very disappointed with the system.
When my first 360 broke, I was NOT going to buy another. But then with the friend list and the gamerscore, etc., I picked up another unit. It lasted longer than the first, but broke 2 months in (50 hours into Oblivion, which was VERY frustrating). I bought a 3rd, but haven't even used it yet.
I bought my 3rd 360 immediately prior to the new CPU being announced and am thinking about taking my 3rd 360 back and waiting for the next model with the cooler CPU. The only thing holding me back is that I have a lot of friends on there that are actual good friends and have moved a considerable distance away from me. We used to have multi-player sessions on the N64, Super Nintendo etc. Now, thousands of miles apart, the 360 is as close as we can get. I've really been missing that.
I'm up in the air as to whether I should keep my third 360 or return it and wait for the model with the better CPU. Hopefully by that time the bugs/glitchces will be worked out. And initially the 360, with a year headstart, is sure to have better games than the PS3 launch titles.
I don't know. I'm really mixed on this. Every single time I have a 360, I feel like such a corporate whore. The company tried to sue me for lampooning them, 6 years back. They're not exactly friends of mine. And their bullying business tactics, in my opinion, are out of hand.
Will the PS3 be any better? I do suspect it will have better graphics and less slowdown (if only because the HDD is required) and possibly less FPS games (there is an overabundance of FPS titles on the 360). At the same time, I think it will end up being just as buggy at launch and I don't think the LIVE stuff will be nearly as good as what Microsoft has put together.
Sorry you don't like my page anymore. I have added some political and funny stuff updates over the past month or two that you may enjoy. I get it from both ways -- the majority of emailers are asking why I'm not doing movie reviews anymore. Oh well. Life's a bitch, and then your console dies. ;-)

So although i am a fanboi, i can see an awesome game in whichever system, man i love fight night.
Anywhoo back to my point, i look at Sega making this game an exclusive as MAYBE a sign of things to come for hte 360. If Sega, starts making 'exclusives' for the ps3, and it sells, then that could mean they will continue to make exclusives on the ps3. Then other small/big developers would see this and follow suit. 360 is already in trouble in Japan, and as i have stated before, all sony has to do is match the 360 in sales in America and ps3 will reign supreme again, because we all know japan is going to both sony/nintendo. MS is done in japan. Thats all sony has to do, is 'match' the ms in america.
anyway fanboi as i may be i dont want to see one company put out the other as then well gave a monopoly, i just want to see this which is what we probably will see:
1.Sony
2.Nintendo
3.MS
or you can switch 'Wii" around with Sony it wont matter i see MS being 3rd this race.

Gareth, are you kidding or being serious? I actually can't tell!

"When my first 360 broke, I was NOT going to buy another. But then with the friend list and the gamerscore, etc., I picked up another unit. It lasted longer than the first, but broke 2 months in (50 hours into Oblivion, which was VERY frustrating). I bought a 3rd, but haven't even used it yet."
Why didn't you just send the first one back? Your story seems suspicious.

There is NO WAY I would send a console I paid $400 for NEW back for a REFURBISHED unit MS sends back in return. Not a chance. My story seems "suspicious" to you? Do you think I'm making the whole thing up? Wait a second while I plant my tongue firmly in cheek. Okay, I'm ready:
You're right! I'm a plant for Sony! I made the whole thing up! The fact I have 2 registered consoles at MS is irrelevant. The fact I have credit card statements with the Xbox 360 and numerous games on them is beside the point. The numerous calls into 1-800-4-MY-XBOX I've made were just me hoping to tie up their lines so real Xbox users couldn't get through. And MS made me a fake friendlist so I could fool people and appear to be genuine. Give me a break.
