Cooking Mama joins Majesco's E3 roster
Do cooking games have any
place in the North American market? Majesco seems to think so. The publisher is taking a gamble on Office Create's
Cooking Mama, a mini-game-based niche title, previously available in Japan only — yes, we suppose some
Japanophiles did go the import route. But will gaijin dig a perfectly batter-dipped and deep fried tray of shrimp tempura? They best swap in some of Colonel Sander's finest birds to move units on these shores.

this turns me on SO hard
BPMΩ @ May 3rd 2006 5:30PM
Cooking Mama seems like one of those weird titles you can't help but at least TRY.
I know I was interested in it. But the cost of importaning games, and my lack of knowledge of the Japanese language, prevented me from importing.
Hoorah for Majesco!
djork @ May 3rd 2006 5:30PM
IT WON'T WORK! KFC IS BROASTED NOT FRIED!!!
Seriously though, the game looks like fun but I doubt it would sell too many copies to non-Japanophiles. I would buy it, but then again I just picked up a Japanese country cook book at a yard sale the other day too, so I'm probably one of 100 people in the US that would go for it.

Gaming Steve will be so happy~
deft @ May 3rd 2006 5:40PM
Hell yeah!
Thank you Majesco for taking the risk!
Josh @ May 3rd 2006 5:40PM
No! Keep it with the original recipes! Introduce the Americans to Japanese dishes!
hepme @ May 3rd 2006 5:42PM
when is the lawn mowing game coming out?
Ian Bowden @ May 3rd 2006 5:47PM
I knew buying that pink DS with Nintendogs & mario kart for my girlfriend would pay dividends.
Justin @ May 3rd 2006 5:49PM
hepme, when your mom becomes a game developer.
SLy @ May 3rd 2006 5:50PM
I would buy it.
*covers face in shame*
Crosswayboy @ May 3rd 2006 5:59PM
I would buy it, and I don't even own a DS... at least not until the Lite hits the US.
Seriously.
I'm a big fan of Oreno Ryouri (for those that don't know it was a Japanese cooking game for PS1) and any chance I get to chop virtual vegetables is all the excuse I need to spend $40.
IRASHAIMASE!!

Ive been dreaming about this game lately... Why am i watching the FOOD NETWORK at 1am these days????
Neil @ May 3rd 2006 6:56PM
I am so glad this is coming to the US! I love niche titles and will be buying this, hurrah hurrah.
hepme @ May 3rd 2006 7:20PM
How about the dusting game? Or the grocery shopping game?
Maybe this will be fun, but it's just not my cup o tea. Love my DS though :)

For those of us who are.. you know.. grown up.. and have kids.. this seems pretty cool. I love to cook and my daughter loves to pretend she is cooking so she'll probably like this game.
Why are you going to compare this game to mowing the lawn? Cooking is a chore? It takes more skill to cook well than to play most games.
Pal @ May 3rd 2006 8:59PM
Awesome! I love cooking but my girlfriend finds it a chore (her mother doesn't like cooking while my mother loves it). Maybe this will awaken her inner chef!
Alkaiser @ May 3rd 2006 9:24PM
I saw the video of the "hamburg steak" level and I figured, "Hey, this looks cool, but I could do it in real life, and then have some actual food afterwards."
Pass.
If you're going to put cooking into a game, you have to make it exaggerated in some way (unless you intend this to be a teaching aid.) like Cooking Fighter Hao did.

A game with a big nose and the wii as a finger would be cool. It would be called booger giants, and the object would be to pick until you get a big enough wad to roll up. Then you flick it. AWESOME
John Hummel @ May 3rd 2006 10:14PM
And I was about 3 days away from importing this - yay!
idioteraser @ May 3rd 2006 10:25PM
This game has 76 releases according to the Majesco release. So consider it a cooking tutorial game that teaches you those 76 recipes.
Plus how many of us in the states have ever cooked squid on a stick?
BatzRadio @ May 3rd 2006 10:39PM
Never again will people have to worm their way through RPG's just to get to the cooking mini-game.
Now that Convenience Store Sim just needs to get over here.
jadenguy @ May 3rd 2006 11:04PM
i think this is definately a fun budget title with little to no challenge at all, but full of cookalicious crayolanime portmanteauish fun.
Sloopydrew @ May 4th 2006 3:40AM
Shrimp Tempura is one of my favorite foods. At the same time, playing a game where I cook the stuff isn't exactly at the top of my "things to do" list.
Gonzo @ May 4th 2006 4:24PM
As a huge fan of Phoenix Wright and Trauma Center, I'm definitely getting this game the moment it's released. How could I not: I love cooking too. They need to make more professional simulation games for the DS and the Wii when it comes out. I've given my suggeastions before: like journalism (perfect nich for my Fear & Loathing game idea), garbage man, comedian (the ds can laugh, can't it), and the list goes on.
What sort of professional sim games would the rest of you gamers like to see?
Varsity @ May 9th 2006 11:17PM
Everyone loved Katamari, lets hope Cooking Mama will gain the same attention.
I usually don't hardcore game on my DS anyway. I have with a few games (Animal Crossing/Mario Brothers/etc) but most of my other games, I just play when I have a quick couple of minutes, or I need to waste thirty minutes. I think this game would be a nice, fun time waster.
brabbit @ May 23rd 2006 7:14PM
I love this game. Ever since I first heard of it. I was hoping and praying that SOMEONE would have the brains to bring it to the U.S. I was going to import it also, but THANKS to Majesco I will wait for it to come here.
