F.E.A.R. confirmed for Xbox 360, this time it's official
Vivendi has officially announced F.E.A.R.
for the Xbox 360, following a series of rumors and sightings that began this past February. Day 1 Studios (MechAssault series) will be
handling the port, as Monolith and Vivendi have long severed ties. The publisher did not disclose any details pertaining to the possibility of added or enhanced content in the new version, but did confirm that the game will debut next week at E3. F.E.A.R. is scheduled to arrive on the Xbox 360 this fall.

I hope they get it right as far as the programming goes. There was someone talking about how the 360 should be programmed to its strengths (less use of the ram) on another post. I think once the devs start doing this, the 360 is going to really be a console force to be reckoned with.
Don Don Pom Pom @ May 4th 2006 5:34PM
I'm really surprised that Microsoft is still letting publishers just poop out port after port to their console. It lost them leverage the last time because it never gained an identity of its own because of it. Why buy the system if its just flooded with your standard PC games? Let alone FPS after FPS.
I mean, yay to those who have crap PC systems and all, but geez, we really need some fresh air in here.
Dan Choi @ May 4th 2006 5:43PM
I was wondering what Day 1 was up to these days (now that MechAssault has somewhat stalled as a non-portable Microsoft Games Studios franchise). Good to hear they've got other projects in the works.
fanjob @ May 4th 2006 6:00PM
All you guys do is whine and complain. If you go to the Vivendi forums everyone there kept arguing with them that they should do a port of Fear to 360. Now we see people complaining that they shouldn't do a port. Will you guys ever make up your minds?
King @ May 4th 2006 6:01PM
Well they are fresh to me. I don't really like playing games on my PC, I hate using a mouse and keyboard.
If I play for any longer than a half hour I start to get pain on the back of my hands. I've played counterstrike source and out of a room of 16 people (no bots) 1 person had a headset.
I prefer to play with friends on live and be able to kick my feet up on the sofa and play on my 32".
vince @ May 4th 2006 6:02PM
and people say the 360 is the best thats a fucking joke all 360 has is PC ports wtf try getting something original
...and EA making a RPG... they should just quit life
SuicideNinja @ May 4th 2006 6:09PM
I second that, King.
The mouse is easier and everything, but the keyboard is a crappy control device. It's too easy to get fatigued on a M&K. And I don't want to deal with an Operating System that's not made for gaming.
If the 360 didn't get these ports, I would never play these games. Can my PC handle it? Yes. Do I work with computers all day long? Yes. Do I want to be at a computer when I get home? NO.
Jouten Za @ May 4th 2006 6:14PM
Excellent point SuicideNinja! I concure 100%!

I think these ports are great.
Im not sure what kind of PC set up I would need to play FEAR with voice chat in 1080i on my big TV. But Im sure I'll never have one.

He?sy now #6 vince, you're wayyyy to hard on the old 360! They can port over ALL the PC fps stuff if they want-PC has the best in all of gamedom [?] Besides don't count on the PS3 for much; I've got a big fat feeling we are going to be seeing a shitload of Jap crap on that console such as MMOs, anime crap, and the rest of the cheapy quicky sludge they can spit out [I call them Saturday nite specials] and whatever barf games they can't squeeze out on PS3 the WIZZ or WII or whatever that thing is will get the rest. C'mawwwwwwn 360!! lol!
Jouten Za @ May 4th 2006 8:00PM
I have a decent PC that can still play vid games. It play oblivion, fear, BF2 all max'd out in video/audio/etc but I would still prefer to play on my 360. As I agreed before with SuicideNinja, after spending all day at work and even some hours at home on a keyboard and mouse, I want to play my games in comfort and on a bigscreen. This also is good for when I play with friends in co-op style games or splitscreen games. You can't really do that on a computer. I probably could because I have the hardware too, but then again, you have Operating System stability issues.
ZildjianKX @ May 4th 2006 8:23PM
I too agree with SuicideNinja... I don't want to be on my PC/Mac when I get home from work. I'd rather sit on a Sofa with a big screen HDTV and a wireless controller.
Serious Kriss @ May 4th 2006 8:46PM
Yes, because it's completely impossible to hook up a PC to a HDTV and use a wireless pad. Or is it?

Tom @ May 4th 2006 9:49PM
If, like me, you don't like playing FPS games with a keyboard & mouse, a nice alternative is using a joystick in place of WASD controls and using mouse as usual. It's pretty comfortable, especially if they're both wireless.
KingOfGods @ May 4th 2006 10:53PM
Serious Kriss ...that's our point. Gaming should be simple....why go through all that trouble to buy a wireless control, buy cables to hook up my pc to an HDTV, a video card that supports TV out if I don't already have one when I can just pick it up for 360, sit back on my couch and have a blast.
On top of that some games on pc have horrible if any support for a controller. Just my opinion and preference. For you it may be easier but for me I prefer consoles.
Pretty Obvious @ May 5th 2006 12:23AM
Yet another reason why console gaming owns PC gaming.
Serious Kriss @ May 5th 2006 12:39AM
@KingOfGods :
No, the point that was made is that it's more comfortable to play on a console than on a PC. I just showed that you can play in similar conditions with both. How exactly is it more troublesome to get a wireless pad for your PC than for your console? And TV out on video cards has been standard for quite some time now.
Now the simplicity argument I can understand, since PC games aren't exactly "plug & play" (yet... we'll see if Vista manages to change that).
RoboJones @ May 5th 2006 3:13AM
FEAR wasnt that great, its good at the start and then well it just gets repetative. Of course this port is going to lose something in the transition, they always do, a controller is just not as precise as a M&K and that means your going to have to dumb it down. What we should have got was not a port but a spin off built from the ground up to utilise the consoles abilities but its easier and cheaper to make a most likly not as good port and sell it for full price. I wouldn't get excited for this.
KingOfGods @ May 5th 2006 7:49AM
Serious Kriss ...
"How exactly is it more troublesome to get a wireless pad for your PC than for your console? And TV out on video cards has been standard for quite some time now."
I find it troublesome to go out and spend another $40-50 on a wireless pad on top of the $100 (give or take a couple of bucks)on a new video card and $50+ on the game when my console is ready to go standard, all I have to do is supply the game and my ass on a couch.
Recently I purchased Oblivion for the PC because it was $10 cheaper than 360. I tried to play but my video card (ATI 128mb) just wasn't up to the task. I ordered a new card (ATI PCIX 256mb, 12 pixel pipeline, 256 bit) from newegg for $150. Now if you do the math I just spent $200 plus shipping & tax (and a week of waiting for the card that was shipped from Cali) for a game I could have spent $60 for on 360 and been done with it.
Did I mention I'm having driver issues with the card and can't play a game without the graphics driver crashing.
Like I said before, PC gaming may be for you but for me I prefer the ease of the console.
Just my opinion and experience.
Ethan Thomas @ May 5th 2006 10:22AM
You know what the funniest part of topics like this one is? Watching the PC guys get fired up everytime a PC game ports over to the 360. Before Quake 4 launched on 360, the entire PC gaming community said they'd never get it to run. I played it just yesterday and it runs fine. Now, it's F.E.A.R.'s turn to get bad-mouthed for jumping to the 360. I think the whole "controller and mouse" control crap is a pretty see-through front. What is really the reason they get so angry is because last week, they were talking about how great their $600 graphics card is and about how much the 360 sucks because it'll never be able to run a game like F.E.A.R.. I, for one, am very glad that we are seeing these PC ports. I'm not nearly motivated enough to spend $1,000 bucks on parts just to run a couple of games, knowing that I'll need to replace those same parts a few months from now to run another game I'll no doubt want to play. I hope MS continues to bring us games like this. My computer is a P.O.S., so the more ports, the better. As a side note, am I the only one who thinks it would be awesome to see the Command and Conquer games like "C&C Generals" come over to the 360? I used to play the crap out of the ones that came out on the original Playstation back in the day. Probably wouldn't happen in a million years though. Ah well.
Serious Kriss @ May 5th 2006 11:12AM
@Ethan Thomas :
"Before Quake 4 launched on 360, the entire PC gaming community said they'd never get it to run. I played it just yesterday and it runs fine."
Huh? Who said the 360 wouldn't run Quake 4? I mean the original Xbox somewhat managed to run Doom 3, why would anyone think the same engine woulnd't run on a more powerful console (even though Quake 4 for the 360 clearly has severe performance issues)? I'm not sure who you think represents the "entire PC gaming community", but you got the wrong guy.
And I actually don't care about the 360 getting ports. What really annoys me is when console/PC co-developpement ruins good franchises like Deus Ex, Thief, Sea Dogs, Rainbow Six, etc.
Bottom line, if you like PC games so much, it would probably be safer to upgrade your PC instead of waiting for watered down ports that may or may not come to the 360.
Ethan Thomas @ May 5th 2006 11:43AM
Kriss -
Alright, in fairness, not the "entire" PC gaming community said it wouldn't run. I was being sarcastic, and I apologize that it was taken literally. But I would very very confidently say that the vast majority was..well..to choose words carefully as to keep from getting misunderstood again, let's just say "unhappy" with the decision and swore up and down it would run like junk. And you just had to mention that it "clearly has performance issues" on 360, which is quite a coincedence. The frame rate dips. Yes. I know this. But would I pay $500+ dollars to get it to run smooth? No. It just doesn't mean that much to me. It's not one or two people I spoke with, but quite a few on the subject of Quake 4 being able to run on the 360. I made the mistake of visiting some PC gaming forums, where the PC is the end-all be-all of gaming as we know it, which is far from the case. As far as upgrading my PC, I'm actually a computer technician by trade, and I don't see it as being affordable or worthwhile to me to put money towards purchasing equipment that will be obsolete in months. Of course, all consoles will become obsolete, as will anything technology-related. But they go obsolete at a slower rate than PC components. As for the games being watered down and ported, I don't consider games like Oblivion to be watered down. Now, it's not wise to say something like that, because you'll always have those high-end PC owners who will fight to the death against that statement and swear that there's no comparison between the PC version and the console version. But so be it. If I had invested as much as some have into their computers, I would be right there with them I'm sure.
The bottom line for me is this: I enjoy PC games, but not on a PC. I hate using the keyboard/mouse setup, I hate looking at a CRT monitor (yes, I could get a flatscreen. But then again, there's more money invested into the PC), and I hate sitting in an uncomfortable task chair while I'm playing. If you look at the specs and capabilities, can it honestly be argued that the 360 is a good deal for the chipset you get? I don't think so. And that's my opinion, which I am entitled to. You are entitled to call me a "fanboy", or whatever you would like to. But I'm a fan of games, not corporations. And I know a good deal when I see one. For me, the 360 is a surefire way to enjoy at least some of the PC games that interest me without spending a ton of cash. That's my two cents.
dsub @ May 5th 2006 2:16PM
I find it ironic that alot of these fanboys the 360 sucks because it gets nothing but PC ports, but one of the premier launch titles for the PS3 will be UT2007, a PC port, and all the PS3 fanboys are excited about it. Whatever.
Also, according to 1up.com there will be extra features in the 360 version of FEAR. In there announcement of this they claim:
"They're also producing unspecified amounts of all-new single-player and multiplayer content for the game."
here's the link.

Serious Kriss @ May 5th 2006 9:35PM
@Ethan Thomas :
"And you just had to mention that it "clearly has performance issues" on 360, which is quite a coincedence."
It's not just me, every single review I read mentioned it (and rated the PC version higher). And please, enough with the 500$ cards already, I know they're out there but you don't need them. Hell, even Oblivion runs smooth on my 6800, and I bought that more than a year ago.
Speaking of Oblivion, it's clearly not just a PC port, it's been designed with the console in mind : it's a lot more action/adventurish than it's predecessors, the interface was designed for a pad, they used an HDR method that won't let you turn on AA unless you have a very recent ATI card (when they could have used the HDR found in HL2 Lost Coast)... So yes, it's been "consolised", and while I find it's a great and fun game after a bit of modding, as an RPG it doesn't compare to Daggerfall.
And again, you can have a couch/HDTV setup to play PC games, just like you could hook up your 360 to a monitor. That's no argument. Simplicity of use is one, and it's the biggest advantage of consoles over PCs. Well, that an all the exclusive franchises that you can't find on the PC. Which both the Xboxes severly lack at the moment.
KillerPMS @ May 13th 2006 12:46PM
O.K fellas, put down your weapons and lets all get along. We all have one thing in common, the love of the game. Where we differ is how we play the game. Does it really matter? There are always going to be people who like playing with different controlers and/or mouse n' keyboard. Each to there own. I personaly really dislike fps on my 360. the controler is slugish, less responsive than my laser mouse and keyboard. however, I really hate trying to play Need for speed on my pc. the 360 controler is much better. I love the look of games on my 42' hdtv but also enjoy bf2 on my 21' widescreen monitor. different ways to enjoy this great thing we call gameing. simply put if you dont like it, dont use it. lets all stop the "i know best" routine and just have some good ol fun. 360, ps3, wii and pc alike. they all got something good to em.

Hey Killer, some really great comments there..really. Food for Thought! Just a couple things to keep in mind next time you write a scathing opus: punctuation.
Nothing undercuts a great p.o.v. worse than forgetting to put a capital 'H' (see line 6) over here, or a parenthases (see line 10) over there! Let's not even discuss the spelling ( 'controlers' ? Phee-eew!), I could write a whole article on just that! Ha ha.
You make some very valid points, but it's difficult to 'get' them because of your poor spelling. These things trip the reader as we negotiate our way through the thick jungle brush of your comments.
If you suffered from, say some form of dyslexia, I'd almost understand... it's just that it's so simple these days to spellcheck our work! You know, before we send it out into the nether of the internet.
Anyways, best wishes.. hope you take some of my tips to heart before you blast those 'idiots' w/ that sharp tounge of yours! Go get 'em!
All the best,
The DonutLady.
