Call of Duty 3 announced; leak confirmed [update 1]

Call of Duty 3's just been confirmed, and it looks like we were right on the money with our early leak of the WWII-related game.

Back in early March, we printed the following information (and a whole lot more) on the focus of an upcoming sequel: "'CoD 3' ... is being produced by Big Red One dev Treyarch. ... The next Call of Duty World War II-based title will return gamers to the battlefields of Normandy as the Allies take on Nazi Germany to drive them out of France once and for all. This time around, American and British forces are joined by Canadian troops, Polish tanks, and French freedom fighters in a reenactment of the bloody Normandy Breakout campaign spearheaded during the summer of 1944. In the push to Paris, you'll get to choose how you approach each mission, free of menu screens and jarring non-interactive cut-scenes."

Here's what IGN quoted from Activision for the announcement yesterday: "Through the eyes of four Allied soldiers, Call of Duty 3 brings players closer to the fury of combat as they fight through the Normandy Breakout, the harrowing offensive that liberated Paris and changed the fate of the world. Developed by Treyarch, Call of Duty 3 is the follow up to the #1 next-generation game and is scheduled for a 2006 release." Fingering the developer and the setting? Not too shabby -- while Joystiq pats itself on the back.

Check out the IGN trailer below for a first-person look somewhat reminiscent of the FPS sequence in the Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer from TGS. At the end of the "official E3 teaser" trailer, a number of platforms are listed, with the major manufacturers (including a small "Nintendo Revolution" in text) and publisher/developer combo listed. We suspect that versions for the PC and possibly the current-gen consoles will be covered with ports as well. Now all we have to do is wait for the word on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. (Infinity Ward, we're looking at you!) More info obviously hitting at E3.

As far as a PC version is concerned, it is a little troubling that the PC platform wasn't listed at the end of the E3 teaser trailer like the other consoles were (next-gen or otherwise). While it's true that Treyarch didn't develop a PC version of Big Red One, if they're using a similar engine to that of CoD 2, I see no reason why they shouldn't at least port the game to PC environments as well.

The PC platform was also listed in our leaked platform specs for this game (linked below), but, then again, those specs were still missing the Wii/Revolution support at the time (which is understandable considering other official announcements from publishers omitting the Nintendo platform at least temporarily). Hopefully, the issue of PC support will be clarified during E3, unless they stick with PCs only on Infinity Ward-developed releases -- like the supposedly upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.

Yes, Wiimote is definitely "gay" as you say, it will sexually harass all the male players. DVD remote? Are you just stupid troll or what? Don't you get it? It's MOTION SENSING controller. I'd like to see your DVD remote do that. I'd like to see how "gay" motion sensing controllers are when MS and Sony copy them for their own consoles just like analog controller and rumble pak. And trust me, it's just a matter of time.

Wii will flop like Gamecube? Nintendo made profit with GC although they finished third in this generation. Nintendo will sell Wii with profit from the beginning opposite to PS3 and X360 which are bringing major losses to both companies. What is the main point of business? Minimize losses and maximize profit? No matter how much you hope for it, Nintendo ain't going anywhere from the game business.

And don't get me started about hype. I've got two words for you: "Emotion" and "Engine".

I enjoy the pretty graphics and presentation, but for christ and dead puppies please stop making these world war (insert number here) games! You developers have beaten this dead horse into mush! Stop it, stop it, stop it, stop it!

Oh wait.... Mabye I am looking at this from the wrong perspective. The developers aren't at fault. They're only making these games because people keep buying them. Okay. Let me rephrase this. sony isnt looking to make their controller detect movement. that was pure speculation from a post I made on the ps3 controller. dont be so blind in your fanboyism

I just hope that CoD 3 is really thought out to take full advantage of the Wii controller and won't just be a PS3/360 port with worse graphics and simple "light gun" functionality slapped on; the amount of thought that ubisoft seems to putting into red steel for the wiimote functionality really excites me, and hopefully other developers will follow suit in all of their Wii games, including FPS's.

Video-game consoles can help us build new worlds with the content of our choice...Why chose a scenario that humanity should have avoided in the first place?

holy....what the heck are they thinking...giving cod to consoles?? cod is a great game on the pc and Wii simply cannot handle the graphics and the audio intensity of the cod games. big red one sucked, and this is soon going to suck as well if they dont make it for the pc.

really im angry about how they couldnt have the cod 3 on pc. Really i think its STUPID. And they still are doing the stupid ww2 thing, jees why cant they do somfin difernt. why not vietnam, or maby the korean war, oh HOW ABOUT the current war, maby future! I think its not fair to not put it on the PC. There are lots of us who rather play on the PC especially when the first 2 games came on the PC. Maybe the guys who developed the game will find out that the graphics come out better on PCs and the movements are much less complicated than on PSs and xboxes. Come on people, whats your problem for not putting it in PC form? You will have a better come out all around. Just putting it in game boxes is child play, what about the adults? Get it out on PC!!!
