E3 security guard says watch out for nerds
Team Joystiq visited the Convention Center this afternoon upon arriving in Los Angeles. Vendors were slowly starting to put together kiosks, hang banners, and suspend digital screens so large they make your head spin. Only workers involved in the construction process are allowed on the actual floor for now, and everything is well guarded. I spoke with security personnel at one entrance door and the gentleman had this to say regarding show attendees: "Watch out for nerds."I took a quick self-assessment of my inner-game-nerdness and sheepishly walked away. Should be fun!

"Watch out for nerds"? I guess that's all we are to the rest of the world... I think I'm just gonna.. just gonna go over there.. ya, go over there and cry now.

I have no idea who the guy in the accompanying picture is, and I'm sure he has nothing to do with any of this, but I feel like I want to punch him. Really badly.

Haha if he gets pissed we might have a Ricky Manning Jr. situation at E3

The guy pictures is actually just the first image that pops up on google image search "security guard"- Don't ask me why I decided to randomly google it.... Perhaps in an effort to avoid studying for finals.

The "nerds" are the reason that this industry exsists. This industry is what makes this expo exsist. This expo is providing this guy a job as a security gaurd. You would think he would have a little more sense than insulting the people that give him a job.

I think he wasn't making fun of them, he was trying to give out a warning. "Watch out for nerds." Perhaps nerds killed his parents, or his fiance, or his brother. Now, in the ultimate humiliation, he is forced to work for them. Heed his call.
"Watch out for nerds."

Ah, a case of closet gamer! Maybe he just feels sheepish about playing with a wiimote! Let alone the fact that he probably did not realise the industry is worth over 25 billion.
Oh well! Nerd Power!

Are we feeling a little insecure today?

I think the real deal is that the industry is made up of pretty regular people, and those are the ones who are supposed to be at E3. Retail executives, game publishers, business-people, legitimate press. If you see a "nerd", which to me means a scraggly little kid with glasses who's all hyped up to be at his first E3, there's probably a good chance he shouldn't be there.
No offense to the Joystiq crew, who I'm picturing as the Ron Burgundy-led news team from Anchorman. Am I right??

I've been to E3.
Seriously. There's big-time nerds. (Especially ones from gaming sites in ugly matching shirts.) They're not the majority, but they're there.

"Seriously. There's big-time nerds."
I've been to E3 as well.
The point is, the big-time nerds are more likely to be the trouble-makers, the fakers, and the takers. It wasn't some studio exec that walked out with all those priceless Sega figurines a couple of years ago, for example (leading to an embarrassing public plea from Sega for the thief to return them).
Time was, and I don't know if this is still true, but any schlub with a web site could get press credentials for E3. These are not the kinds of people that are really supposed to be there. Half the time, they also get credentials for their buddies at the same time just by printing up some fake business cards.
Probably about half of all the people that go to E3 shouldn't really be there.
