PlayStation 3 in its final form [update 1]

What you are seeing is the PS3 in its final form. The system will launch in the US on November 17 for $500-$600 depending on hard drive size. Though the controller looks the same, it has internal motion sensors for added gameplay mechanics.

AHHHHHHH!!!!!! GOD DAMN YOU SONY! GOD DAMN YOU!
What a wonderfully innovative job they've done, using the same old controller and stealing Nintendo's key functionality. And overcharging for their ridiculous console.... Oh, well. Maybe if no one buys that unbelievable price Nintendo will still take home a win.
Wii pride forever :-P.
Mat @ May 8th 2006 10:17PM
youch. save your money.
well, or just buy something else...
Derick @ May 8th 2006 10:18PM

WEAK SAUCE.
Jesse 3rd @ May 8th 2006 10:19PM
Boo. I've usually been scared of Sony, but now I'm just crying because I'm so happy all Nintendo has to worry about is Xbox Live kicking WiFi's ass.
ShrimpyMcDougal @ May 8th 2006 10:19PM
HA!!! OMG the lack of inovation by Sony has to be the funniest thing in the world... A motion sensor controller? Wonder were that idea came from?
karmaghost @ May 8th 2006 10:19PM
The playstation text looks like the "Spiderman" movie text.
Galls @ May 8th 2006 10:20PM
they mark everyone else inovations as gimmicks
Wiimote=gimmick
Xbox LIve=no one wants to play an a unified service
Then they steal these ideas and claim them to be their own.
Next sony sues people for downloading music on P2P.
Next great sony innovation Rootkit V2.0
mike @ May 8th 2006 10:20PM
Thos Canadian Prices they have listed in sonys slide show are complete bullshit.
First off, the 499 USD /549 CDN will never happen because 499 is currently worth MORE ($555 to be exact), and thats without bank converison fees. At that price point, Americans would all be importing from Canada to save like $40 off the system in the end.
Second of all, These consoles never get priced nicely with the exchange rate like that here. The xbox premium is $499 CDN yet $399 USD is only $443 Cdn.
Theres no way that PS3 is being sold for 2 pennies less then $600 Canadian
Stu @ May 8th 2006 10:21PM
I'm glad they went back to the classic controller design. It's tried tested and true. Don't mess with a good thing, don't fix it if it ain't broke. Additional generic phrase about how something doesn't need changing.
Alkaiser @ May 8th 2006 10:22PM
Ouch. $500? That's too much. $399 is grudgingly allowable, but $499 is easily resistable.
If Microsoft lowers their prices before the PS3 launches...this is looking quite bad for Sony.
ryan @ May 8th 2006 10:22PM
i dont no wat to think. half of me wants it, cuz its a big giant hunk of function, but the other half wants to kill kaz and phil...
John4767 @ May 8th 2006 10:22PM
OMG... it cots more then the Xbox 360 thats for shure...
Kevin @ May 8th 2006 10:22PM
Well, this console war is looking really interesting w/ 3 consoles that are pretty different...
Tim @ May 8th 2006 10:23PM
Poor people and nintendo fans cry today... oh wait, they are the same people.
Wade @ May 8th 2006 10:23PM
Q's for the Joystiq crew or anyone else that might have heard something:
1. So what's the DRM going to be like on the downloadable PSP content?
2. Do you have to have a PS3 to download PS1 games?
3. Can you rip your own games?
vidGuy @ May 8th 2006 10:23PM
I will not buy a PS3 until it is in the bargain bin for $99! Yuck! $500? No thanks! And the same controller? You already added on the sticks, now adding in limited motion sensing does nothing for me.
Anonymousaurus @ May 8th 2006 10:24PM
internal motion sensors, eh?
im sure glad they got to it first...
but seriously, i like this dualshock 3. and i dunno if its just me, but the system seems smaller too.
i can live without the spiderman font though.
well, this aint no episode of queer eye, and i aint no (insert queer guy), so kudos to ps3 and lets keep this show rollin'.
Paul @ May 8th 2006 10:24PM
Note that their motion sensitivity is just six degrees of rotation left and right, so it is not an incredibly accurate thing. It's nothing close to the Wii controller functionality, which can sense any kind of movement you do and mimic it on screen exactly.
jOEfRO @ May 8th 2006 10:24PM
good price for blu ray player and mega game console..........controller SUCKS

$500 - $600??? Geebus. Nope, not gonna buy it. Not worth it.
Hmmm is it me or is Nintendo and Sony really screwing up things for themselves? It kinda looks like M$ has the more attractive system right now... but we'll see... Nintendo and M$ still have their press confrences tomorrow. I can't help but imagine the giggles from the crowd everytime they say "Wee". And I have a feeling M$ might have another boring press confrence like last year. Screw this, I'm just going to build a PC.
Andrew @ May 8th 2006 10:25PM
The controller is the biggest irk for me. I mean it looks EXACTLY like the PS2 one. The PS2 controller is great no doubt, but it's not like it can't be improved. Any teenager with a PlayStation could give them some pointers.
Jesse 3rd @ May 8th 2006 10:25PM
9. I'm glad they went back to the classic controller design. It's tried tested and true. Don't mess with a good thing, don't fix it if it ain't broke. Additional generic phrase about how something doesn't need changing.
------------------------------
Psst...That's what we said when Nintendo released the N64: "Oh, why try CDs? Carts are tried and true. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. Sure, it lacks alot of features that the competition brings, but hell, additional ratationalization about how mad I am at my favorite to win the race with an almost dead horse."
Your version sounds better though, trust me. Less filler.
rTwelve @ May 8th 2006 10:26PM
My God, it's full of stars.
Aaron @ May 8th 2006 10:26PM
I guess Sony was right before when they stated "We want people to WANT a PS3, to go out and get another job and save up to get one..." I save money and I'm not about to ruin my lifestyle to have yet another job so I can afford a gaming console.
Indigo Bunny Spank @ May 8th 2006 10:27PM
Just think my fellow nerds: With taxes, $60+ games, and assorted "accessories", we're looking at $700+...*ugh*
360 just looked a bit sweeter!
Alex Oenes @ May 8th 2006 10:27PM
Hah. Good to see that Sony's on the ball earlier than they were two generations ago.
Cloud @ May 8th 2006 10:27PM
I seen the press conference and was dissapointed most of the way. The First party games were ehhh, but the third party games on the other hand were great! As for the controller it isn't that big of a deal, it would of happen in a later generation anyway and it still isn't a Wiimote. When he was demostrating the warhawlk game (right name?) it didn't look too fun to play like that. It still has plenty of possibilities but they surely wont be the showtakers this year. Just in case they are, I renownce my gaming. And we all know Nintendo will make us all go Wiiiiii!!! (at least I hope)
Zweibel @ May 8th 2006 10:28PM
There are too many people griping about the controller issue. We get it. While Sony may use the feature in a few games, I highly doubt it will be implemented as well as Nintendo's controller. You complain when it's this way and you complain when it's that way. It's a freakin' controller so please stop beating a dead horse. D:
Anyway, the price of the console has really turned me off to buying one. Am I the only gamer in this world who has little money as it is to spend on my hobby? It's like they're forcing me to get a credit card if I want to enjoy the finer things in life. Looks like I'll be skipping on both consoles and get a Nintendo Wii or just continue playing games on my PC. =/
shiftup72 @ May 8th 2006 10:28PM
son. of. a. BITCH!!! I cant believe that sony would ripp off nintendo like that. In japan wouldn't they lose face or something? this is the kind of thing that breeds fanboys. I, myself am very pissed that I cannot even conguate my sentences correctly and I very much want sony to lose lots of money and for my sony headfones im where to snap in half so I can sue.
I mean if sony had made some something INNOVATIVE that was better than the Wiimote I WOULD buy a ps3 and be happy but I guess ACTUALLY use thier own Ideas would be (God forbid!)would be stooping to nintendos level.
Darth Pixel @ May 8th 2006 10:28PM
Well, the controller should please those who thought the boomerang was too weird.
I am disappointed they reverted to the old design, however. I muh preferred the boomerang controller.
Sony's reaction was predictable. The public did not like their innovative design, so they reverted to the old one.
As far as the price is concerned. Great deal for a video game system + a Blu-ray player.
Very competitive pricing, probably at a significant loss to Sony.
bigshynepo @ May 8th 2006 10:29PM
WHAT A BUNCH OF HATERZ. CALM DOWN YOU WII-TARDS.
Comment on the system for what it is. It's expensive but it's pure sexiness and it will have a nice balance of features that all games will like.
Not every person has room to be swinging and jumping around with wii-motes in their living rooms. I hope all you wii fanboys aren't too sad that PS3 stomped on your glory.
Chris @ May 8th 2006 10:30PM
Does anyone really care anymore?
I mean, I want my FF13 and MGS4 as much as the next person, but seriously...
Jesse 3rd @ May 8th 2006 10:30PM
21. $500 - $600??? Geebus. Nope, not gonna buy it. Not worth it.

How the hell could you base that on just Nintendo's name? I mean, ok, diss it because of the graphics, because that's something that affects gameplay, but in what way is Xbox 360 marketable to casual gamers, or to non-gamers? They just see a giant nerd box to me, anyway. Wii might sound like a dick of a name, but hell, just call it a Nintendo like always and it's a damn afterthought. I'll give you non hd (I wouldn't before I got my huge 70 inch hd tv, but now I understand the hate) but not this name bull. I would probably not like your comments equally under any name, because of the meat of the subject. See, like Sony, you just keep saying the same things without really giving anyone a reason to agree with you. I could be doing the same thing, but I'll probably be bashed because my name is Jesse, which can be a girl name, and I'm a guy! (ok, getting childish, but this is how you sound)
Anyway, I see a tight race because everyone hates something about something, not unlike the last gen and the one before and...well, you get the idea.
Brian @ May 8th 2006 10:31PM
So the controller's wireless, the games are solid and things people want to actually play for more than 3 hours total, and they've got something going with the online. Price: 500 bones. The potentiality of this either going boom or bust is high.
Carl Winslow @ May 8th 2006 10:31PM
This is going to be interesting. Three consoles of the same "generation" all priced very differently. I was saying to my friend this morning, "No way the PS3 is priced above $399.99." I am shocked.
Paul @ May 8th 2006 10:32PM
Ouch, my hands will hurt for another 5 years or so... when will they change the digital pad from the primary position?
Rein @ May 8th 2006 10:33PM
Hmm, it's kind of funny since I was late on getting my PS2 (Summer 2004) and now it seems I'm going to be late getting a PS3... Ah well, I can wait until 2010.
Doc @ May 8th 2006 10:33PM
Lemme just tell you something.
Tomorrow.
Nintendo.
Will.
Strike.
Back.
You wouldnt think nintendo HAS ONE MORE SURPRISE IN STORE WOULD YOU? :)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))
Staticneuron @ May 8th 2006 10:34PM
Over charge? For what is in the system? I think some people need to go over the specs and what each respective part should cost.
squashedyoshi @ May 8th 2006 10:34PM
Same damn directional pad.. buttons. Can you game publishers not make anymore games where you can move diagonally with the d-pad, since trying to do so with the ps controller makes you want to fricking smash it?
Darth Pixel @ May 8th 2006 10:35PM
Come on guys, it's barely $100 more than Xbox 360 and you get a Blu-ray player for that price too.
Kerina @ May 8th 2006 10:36PM
Not gonna buy it. Not when I can get an increasingly supported console in the Wii for more than half the price. This will only be attractive to major tech heads who were already going to plunk down a thousand for a blu-ray player. Say goodbye to teenagers playing PS3. Say so-long to working families playing. Really...who did Sony make this console for? It just befuddles me. Nintendo Wii looks like a good deal...heck even XBOX 360 does. That pricing didn't work for the 3DO (close enough in price) and it won't work now. Funny Sega predicted a $500 Playstation...they were just a decade early.
Jesse 3rd @ May 8th 2006 10:36PM
37. Come on guys, it's barely $100 more than Xbox 360 and you get a Blu-ray player for that price too.

How the hell does that get stars? Maybe I use too many words?
Wii. There one word, at least minus that shit.
Kevin @ May 8th 2006 10:37PM
Seriously people, 6 degrees of freedom is NOT the same thing as 6 degrees of rotation!
6 degrees of freedom means translation in X Y and Z, and rotation around those axis as well. 3 translation plus 3 rotation equals 6 degrees of freedom.
Nolan D. @ May 8th 2006 10:37PM
Nintendo better have a new boomerang controller hidden for tommorow.
Or if Reggie pulled a white boomerang out just to be funny.
Ah that would be awesome.
Seriously everyone needs to boycott Sony. I didn't see any games worth playing.
Well Nintendo's secret will be huge compared to this Sony crap.
aj @ May 8th 2006 10:37PM
someone quick! get photoshop and make a nintendo strikes back poster. Oh, and they went with black over silver? Is the past thier only hope for the futuer
agent864 @ May 8th 2006 10:37PM
DS3::XYZ = left/right, up/down, forward/backward. Does it have the positioning and orientation of the Wii-mote? Not sure how close it comes to the Wii, but how many times have you pulled up or jerked back a controller. Yes its probably not the Wii but its something different and now we have 3 highly differentiated game consoles with different control capabilities, different media, different prices, etc. Choice is good.
All the hate for the boomerang, "Ooh I wish they'd stick with the DS2" and now all the hate for the DS3 which is the DS2 with bluetooth and motion detection. No one's ever happy. Prooves Sony should never listen to all the whiny spoiled game bloggers.
I wanted the boomerang or at least the opportunity to try it.
