Of course sony "copied nintendo's" (which is a whole other conversation) design. That's why nintendo announced it so far out from the actual console launch. So that Sony and MS could have their own contemporary pieces of tech. This way nintendo is not locked into custom created games for the Wii, games can be developed for at least two platforms, and most likely three as MS isn't going to miss out on this now. Nintendo has effectively spurred the entire industry to adopt their ideals for the next generation by their timing of announcements.

Vee shall see vat vee shall see.

Ok I want so start by saying I am a Nintendo Fanboy. But aside from anything negative I have to say about the PSiii's controller it does add positivety to developers, kind of.

When developers create a game for the Wii that only uses it subtley, it may be possible to somehow port it to the PSiii. I'm thinking maybe Monkey ball Wii could possibly port, except it may be uncomfortable to play.

What I don't want to see is Developers depending on this subtley just for the sake of porting, in turn nerfing innovation. That is what happened in the past and why Nintendo has fled to something new in the first place.

Myria... Yikes, not to take your blatant flame bait, I would just like to point out that:

a) No-one, has ever claimed that Nintendo was the "innovator" of motion tech, or even touch technology.

b) A few months ago, Sony released some derogatory comments about Nintendo's wiimote... then hastily decide to incorporate it into their own machine. Hmm sounds like they got the last minute Sh&ts put up them; for proof, see the eurogamer article posted earlier by someone; The "WarHawk" author explicitly says that it was a recent addition - it wasn't part of the original Dev kit from Sony...

I think this has alot to do with the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD format war. If more games are made for PS3 and Wii than Xbox 360, some people could start abandoning HD DVD. I sure hope someone wins this format war, because I don't want to buy discs and a player, only not to be able to find new discs on store shelves a few months later.

omg... the idea of nintendo of having a controller which doesnt have analogs (unless u buy add on).. looks like a tv mote, holds with one hand and has motion sensing tech in 3d space is whats 'Revolutionary' bout it ... besides the fact it will have much much Much less powerful cpu... even if you go read the reviews bout the Wii... :/... one of the main advantages of it . is it has the 'ability to play the collection of games from nes snes 64/... i mean even you can download them now for free to your computer -.- theres no need to buy a Revolutionary console for that... I know sony didn't 'Innovate' with motion tech.. but when did nintendo 'Not' copied Dual Analogs? i mean who cares :-/ ... as long as it makes the console better :/ Besides Sony's offering Blu-Ray... HD... superpowerful cpu... Dvd Cd Player... etc etc :L for 599 ?? i think it's cheap enough :) .. Giving it an Objective point of View: Sony has much more to offer with the specs/price than Nintendo.. whichis basically an upgrade from their gamecube with some "Super Innovative ŽŽ controller without analogs...) (Innovation is not always Good lol)

the stupid Sony fanboys keep saying that Nintendo took the same ideas, but here's a clue for you - Nintendo didn't take them the exact same time those ideas launched. I'd cry foul too if Nintendo took ideas about controllers at the same time as their competitors, but they didn't. They might be using technology that was around since the '90s on the PC, but the fact of the matter is they are using it on their console for the first time, and announced it before their competitors. What's looking lame right now is how Sony is trying to play catch up, and ceding to the fact that Nintendo might have the right idea.

People will recognize this news as several things:
- Sony didn't think out the next-gen battle correctly from the start, meaning they got lazy developing their product
- Sony has some serious catch up to do on their research, assuming that they view 3-d motion control as an essential component for the gaming experience
- They still having problems developing a focused strategy, which will kill product development

So you sony fanboy asses can say all you want about Nintendo fanboys, but the fact is Sony is seriously eating crow right now.

Draco (#99) is the perfect example of the misinformed gamers that Sony is targeting. It's sad to see people think that Sony actually replicated the Wiimote when it's hardly the same fruit as the wiimote, the DualShake is more like an over processed strawberry, the stem was cut out, the seeds are gone, the juice is drained and the color flushed, and it doesn't even taste like a fruit anymore. The Wiimote is a fresh Apple, just picked with motion sensing, light gun like abilities, and the ability to see where it is in 3d space.

If you didn't catch the Nintendo press conference earlier today you should watch it, words can hardly tell you how awesome it was.

You guys complain too much, I am gonna play like mad with my DualShit, oops, I mean DualShake. (or is it DualShame? I never know...)

Just because the Wii controller does everything better, doesnīt mean anything. It wonīt be as good as a paperweight(well of course my cheap DualChoke wonīt be too as sony is making the controllers with used coca-cola bottles.)

besides who wants a console thatīs so small? well if people like the xbox360 powerbrick, then my PeeAss3 is gonna be the size of a house, very good to play in the winter when itīs heat will be able to make all my family warm while I watch my huge collection of Blu-ray discs.

Itīs just so fun to say bad things about other people, and sony brings the worst of me... :P

Some very reliable sources told me that the PeeAss3 is huge like a house and heavy like an elephant because less than that and the coolers would make the console go airborne.(sony is pushing itīs R&D people to make it work with electricity only, leaving behind the rumors that it might need fuel to work.

Has anybody taken into consideration why the Logitec/Microsoft controller failed? PC games are produced to be used by basic keyboard and joystiq (flight simulators). Who would develop a game that requires a add on attachment? Not many. So this brings to point: with this feature integrated into every Wii/PS3 controller out there, there is a stronger chance that developers will utilize these features. 3rd party attachments always struggle, mostly because a developer cannot assume their assumed customer base has the propriety hardware with their game. Granted, some games come bundled with such said hardware, but really it locks the developer to rerelease the hardware or deal with a declining consumer base (loss of interest, broken hardware, etc.). If every consumer has this feature included with the core system, the oppurtunity for implementation in a game is far more likely than with any third party attachment in the past.

This isn't much of a surprise. Sony's general strategy for their consoles has been to be an also-ran in every innovative race. For instance, Microsoft talked about Xbox Live, so Sony launched a much weaker, but still existent, online functionality. Now they are incorporating some slight motion-sensitivity to be an also-ran. This does two things for Sony. First, it means that third-party games can be more easily ported to Sony's systems. Second, and this is more important than it may seem at first, it means that nobody can say anything about a Sony system like, ?I love my Gamecube games but I wish I could play them online? or ?This racing game is sweet, but I wish I could just turn my controller to steer, because I really don?t want to buy some stupid wheel peripheral.?

I don't think the Dual-Shake will work for Sony as well as the limited online service did last generation, but throwing that functionality in there wasn't a bad idea. Now they have one slight advantage over Microsoft and slightly less of a disadvantage against Nintendo. I still think PS3 is speculatively looking like the weakest console for the next generation, but it not because the controller has a small new capability. The logic of ?It can do something I didn?t know about before, therefore I like it less? baffles me.

One last point: if any developer is stupid enough to make low-quality, gimmicky games based on tilting the controller that is their own damn fault.

I don't have any problem with Sony using technology which comes from other sources, but the point is, they claim that it is amazingly innovative. I watched both Sony and Nintendo's E3 conferences and Nintendo's was far more exciting and interesting. I don't know the names of the people, but the Nintendo guy (Reggie?) was engaging and funny ("thanks to everyone who wrote good things about the new name when you first heard it, both of you") whereas the Sony guy was just boring and bald. Nintendo's one opened with Miyamoto himself dancing with a wiimote in hand and conducting an orchestra playing the Hyrule theme, and his actions affected the music. Nintendo had Sony's conference slain within the first five minutes.

The Sony guy made ludicrous comments like "truly a fantastic innovation which will really add to the PlayStation 3 success story"...whereas I don't recall Nintendo ever claiming that they invented motion sensitivity and were being hugely innovative, they just said that that's what they were doing and said why they were doing it.

Also, I agree that the left stick should be where the D-pad is on the PS controllers. It should've been like that now with the PS2, but it's still not being corrected for the PS3? If any third party releases a PS3 controller with these things swapped, they could really be on to a winner. And they don't have to worry about motion sensitive intergration because most games probably won't be using it.

Even so, it's an extra feature and Sony needs something to justify their expensive console other than graphics (which don't seem that much better than X360, GT:HD in particular looks unimpressive...they've used 2D sprites for crying out loud) and this feature could well be useful in that respect. They need anything to justify the pricetag and this could just be it for someone who is already a casual gamer.

Most people who've never played before, though, will probably be most interested in Wii. I certainly know a lot of people who don't normally play games who really really enjoy the DS...that could easily translate into a fullsize console, especially if it costs the same price as a DS.

Cost of a "Premium" PS3: $600
Cost of a good HD TV: $2000+
Cost of a PS3 Game: $60 each
Playing motion sensitive Nintendo games: Priceless

Sony has f---ed up grand royally here. The only people who would even think about buying a PS3 are the hardcore gaming elite, because the cost is so ridiculous. But, they essentially pissed us all off by chaning the PS3 controller back to a PS2 pad but without rumble, instead having crappy tilt sensitivity and an XBox Guide button. We, the hardcore elite, are the most likely to see through their BS, and we are the only ones that might actually buy it. But Sony screwed themselves with all this crap, because the hardcore are losing faith. Sony can't hide forever, I can smell their fear. Every 'new' announcement is just another "Oh look we can do it too!" X Box Live? "Oh we can do it too!" DS + Wii connectivity? "Oh we can do it too!" Motion sensitive gaming? "Oh we can do it too!" You can only hear that so often before lose all faith in a company.

Does Apple ever say "oh we can do it too"? No, because they do it first. And that is what the next generation of gaming is all about. Microsoft did HD gaming and an extensive online gaming network first. Nintendo is going to do motion sensitive gaming first. Meanwhile, Sony just keeps on saying "we can do it too" while we are left to sigh and turn our backs on the former king of video games.

One must remember, the PS3's motion sensing capabilities are limited to the gyroscopic.

Meaning it won't have the accuracy of the Wii at all. Anybody who's used a Gyroscopic mouse, or other gyroscopic device knows what I'm talking about.

The Wii uses an external sensor so the controller has exact positioning. No using the PS3 controller like a gun. It's a cheap knockoff.

All this complaining about sony stealing ideas and designs seems a little silly when you look at it from a shareholder perspective. Sony just looked at what works, and what gets the hype and went with it. Microsoft built a huge following with xbox live, so if Sony doesn't follow suit they're going to lose a piece of the market share, simple economics.

Also think about all the free publicity Nintendo got by changing the name of their console? Now think about all the free publicity Sony is getting by adding the motion sensor funtion to their controller...while it's certainly far from all positive publicity is it not still widely talked about by gamers?

Chances are regardless of what the controller looks like, and it's functionality, you've already made your choice about which next gen system(s) you're going to buy. What drives gamers to buy a system usualy isn't the system itself but the games it runs.
