Dell gaming preview: The XPS desktop

You're looking at the latest work-in-progress gaming desktop from Dell, the next XPS. They invited us down today and let us take a gander at their prototype.
They didn't tell us anything juicy about stuff like the components, pricing or a release date. The directors who headed up the presentation were mainly looking for some feedback from the gaming community. One of the interesting things with this new minimalistic design is the complete air flow from rear to front. Unfortunately, everything they showed us was purely aesthetic, so we'll have to hold out for a bit longer to find out about anything else.

The XPS M1710 is Dell's Inspiron gaming laptop...?
Or are they naming their gaming desktop the same name as their gaming laptop?

thats fuckin vile. What self respecting high-end rig user wants that in their room?? They bought out Alienware, you would at least expect them to use some of the kick ass Alienware cases.

Not trolling. Having nothing against Dell or any PC manafacturers. The first look I thought it was animal cage that you take around your pets on an airplane but placed vertically with red bars.

Reminds of a mini-fridge or a locker or something. Maybe a dehumidifier.

Looks a lot better than their current XPS cases. Oh and Alienware's cases, while may seem attractive in images online, are actually gargantuan mountains of creaky plastic. *shudder*

looks like this is an attempt @ a custom btx design.....
think of it as a powermac.... but... ugly... and "dell"ish

wow you guys haven't even seen a finished product yet, and you know nothing about it. You put ANY product in a dingy poorly lit back room, and it will look like crap. Didn't your mothers ever tell you to keep your mouth shut if you didn't have anything nice to say?

I agree with above-- I'd love to see how many of you change what you are saying after you see profession studio shots of it with a nice spec sheet.
Digi Smalls @ May 10th 2006 10:53AM
i'm sure the 'caged animal' thing is something they're not shying away from.
i think it looks great. looks like professional contracting gear. big, loud and serious looking as opposed to big, loud and consumer looking like all those alienware and lit up monstrosities that look like they belong in Fast and the Furious.
make the XPS on the side tonal (not red) and just leave the grates red.

And people criticized my G5 for only having one optical drive, when this one appears to have none.
Joking aside, I am interested in seeing what this rig will turn into, the design certainly has potential.

hahah if Alienware fans don't like the look, they're on the right track.

Nice Pictures of it

This rig is sweet. Check out the Dell website for pictures. The pic on this site doesn't do it justice. Once you look at the Dell website, you will be amazed. I do agree, though, in this picture it does look like a pet carry on cage.
