Joystiq / Engadget Podcast 078 - 05.09.06 [update 1]

(Ed: This podcast was recorded after last night's Sony keynote. Check back later for our thoughts on today's events.)
Now that the plane has landed, we've got our show reg covered and the first of the big three keynotes is out of the way, we decided to hit the mic with some of our fellow Joystiq bretheren and recap day one of E3 '06. No big surprise that Sony dominated today's news, what with their launch date hopes announcement for the PlayStation 3, its pricing strategy, and a new trick for the old dog that is their PS3 controller redesign. Not to be left in the dust, Nintendo did get some Wii launch titles confirmed; yet unconfirmed, however, is that fresh new rumor about the Wii clocking in at $250 when it hits the U.S. streets. Microsoft didn't want to go without their share of attention as well, and confirmed that the Xbox 360's HD DVD drive will connect via USB. (You can imagine our surprise on that one.) Day one is over, day two has just started, but podcast 78 is a go.

Sony dominated today's news? Really? I'm not getting that at all.

We recorded and wrote this last night, when Sony was dominating the news. We'll have another podcast tonight, so stay tuned.

I'm sorry, but you guys sounded so clueless about the PS3 controller that it was painful.
Someone said that the internal sensors would have advantages and disadvantages over the Wii controller? What advantages would those be exactly? As far as I can tell, the Wii controller can do everything in terms of motion sensing that the PS3 controller could do and more.
And then someone else said that now games for Wii can be ported to the PS3? Did you kind of miss the whole "detecting position in space" thing the Wii has going on here?
I'm trying not to sound like a fanboy here, but it seems to me that in your efforts to be as neutral as possible you ended up choking out piles of bullshit in order to avoid bashing the PS3 too hard.

Well it was an ok podcast, always fun to hear big website editors opinions, but I do have a few quelms.
first I'd reccomend the 1up guys, 4 writers/editors for EGM/OPM/CGW, who did a podcast about last night's events and have plenty of ties to the industry.

Secondly, why do you think that the MGS trailer was pre rendered? I mean Kojima himself has never use pre rendered cgi in any of the mgs titles, so why start now?
Oh and you all mentioned sometihng about taking the hd-dvd add on for the xbox and whats going to stoping people from using it in computers or whatever. Well the hd-dvd player that is out right now is essentially just a regular pc drive, it will even hook up and be recognized by bios, but what is stoping it from working in pc's is the lack of drivers. I suspect the same thing would be applied to the new add on.

Great p-cast boys. You hit the nail on the head with a lot of issues with the PS3. I was not impressed. I bought my PS2 for Winning Eleven and GTA, so now, I don't really need to blow $600 on a launch system with the GTA announcement from MS. I can't wait to hear your views on the other two presentations.
