So they stole it from MS than Nintendo. BIG DEAL!

If the technology was a sucess it will on the original Xbox. But it isn't.

I remember that controller in 1999. It was definitely more of a novelty... but it was fun to play with at ebgames :).

Yeah because MS knew all about adding Arcade-style gameplay into a standard controller. Or the fact that Nintey had a "Light-gun/wand" to do just that over 20 years ago. Why they didn't use it back then is because it didn't have as many applications as it can have today. Kinda like having analogue control but no 3D games to utilize them.

Don't forget that Sony lost in the Immersion lawsuit so they couldn't use the dual shock anymore... they needed something and something quick.

If PS3 core doesn't have HDMI output, does that mean you cannot watch BD content from anyone other than Sony Studios? The only reason some many studios jumped on the bandwagon for these new technologies (blue ray and HD DVD) is because HDMI provides Content Copy protection and HDMI will be the standard for next generation media... hmm.. something to think about.

I've said it a million times before: Sony only exists in this industry to milk it for what it can on the backs of everyone else's hardwork. They got "lucky" with the Playstation (if Nintendo hadn't of stuck with the cartridge, Sony would've been bounced out just as quickly as they jumped in). Square was, in fact, developing Final Fantasy VII for the N64 originally and 3rd party companies wouldn't have jumped ship for less powerful hardware from an "unknown" in the industry. Sony seems to think the "Playstation" brand is invincible and will simply sell itself from now to eternity (they won't even participate in EB Games' "Vendor of the Month" program because they don't feel they need to). It will be interesting to see if the gaming public will continue to tolerate this over-bloated behemoth.

nintendo ds is a gimmick console they copied the pda system with a touch screen and small pen, which is nothing new. and they copied the joypad from logitech in 1999, nothing new there. plus u be playing old nintendo games over and over again. and hardly no developers are supporting nintendo only major ones. thats why sony has so many developers and publisher for their consoles. and xbox copied the console from sony, and xbox copied the online from pc. thanks.

Remember when the PS controller came out without analogue sticks? And then the N64 came out and it had an analogue stick? Remember a few months later when Sony put two analogue sticks on the PS Controller and dubbed it the "Dual Shock"? History has a way of repeating itself...

"Sony never mentioned of any motion sensing ability"

They did at last years E3

"The single cartridge game download idea of the DS? Same story"

Was announced that PSP would have it, BEFORE DS was announced at all.

"Having to have two hands on that controller is where the flaw is"

I feel that's actually the advantage

I think it's amazing that Nintendo was correct in keeping the controller a secret, and that Sony would actually copy it. However, Sony's function will never have as much publicity, and there will be few (if any) games that use the function in more than a "gimmicky" fashion.

You can't "point" like the revolution, which willl limit the PS3 controller front FPS, RTS, etc. type of games that the Revolution (pardon..."Wii" ...) has so much freedom in. The PS3 controller will resemble my old microsoft pad with a pointless gyroscope.

Doesn't really matter if Sony stole it from the Wii, or if Nintendo stole it from MS. It's technology that's been out there, and frankly I'm surprised it's taken this long to reach consoles. (Strictly speaking, one could argue that Nintendo implemented it (albeit poorly) way back with the Power Glove, though it used different technology to achieve the desired result. Anyhow...)

The simple fact of the matter is, Nintendo's delivering their system and controller for, what, half the price of the PS3? That's the determining factor for me.

I'm not sure if anyone will read this all the way down here, but Nintendo had a tilt sensor in their powerglove WAY back when.

So, yes, it's closer to stealing fromNintendo, but others have said it's nintendos recfent development, not that the tech exists in general, that has goaded Sony into theft.

im starting to hate fanboys, back in the day you never heard people complaining when sega and nintendo copied each other. copycatting is good for us consumers. It allows developers to make games for other systems. hell all the system have force feed back now. well all but sony. (Hey hold up i just thought of something will the Wiimote have force feedback, dual shock whatever you wanna call it)

Im sure the X360 will have a motion controller too. Then you'll get a chance to play those tpyes of game on ya 360.

What wrong with that!

Im sick of this tech crap, where are the next gen games ? i havent seen any stand out games for any system yet.

I didn't like how the flying game (warhawlk?) was being played with the controller. It looked too unnecessary and a hassle rather then actually being part of the game. I still wonder if the Wiimote (nunchuck) will have a long enough cable or else will it rip off if you move too fast and hit the end barrier?

"Of course, that would imply Nintendo stole their novel and impractical- exscuse me-innovative idea as well."

That's the only part that's incorrect. Nintendo is using different technology for a completely different approach and experience. What Nintendo is doing is much like James Cameron's new approach to 3-D films. We're familiar with the concept from previous technology, but it is being done like never before.

I also bought the Logitech pad back in 1999, and I have to agree, even taken strictly as a normal gamepad, it sucked. The tilt function was unreliable, and the tilt sensitivity was not adjustable (maybe they fixed this with later drivers or something, but I didn't stick around long enough to find out).

To be fair, aside from how frustrating it was to use at the time, it very clearly failed to gain adoption because nobody wrote software for it. I mean, think about it: most PC games in the late 90's -- emulators aside -- were designed for mouse + keyboard or a flight stick of some sort. Not a lot of PC games at the time really demanded a gamepad, so the library of potential games to make full use of the technology was minimal. Logitech didn't really seem to go after developers to write software to take advantage of the technology, so there was zero third-party support for it. Of *course* it was doomed to fail.

We're in a different situation now. Manufacturing processes for small electronics have improved a lot over where they were seven years ago, so if the crappiness of the old gamepad was due to hardware issues, they may be able to overcome them now. Not only that, but software support is more likely, given that *every* PS3 will have the technology, which means that developers are more likely to design software that takes advantage of it -- it's far more financially sensible to design for a technology that 100% of your user base has, as opposed to designing for a technology that maybe 1% of your userbase has.

That said, I'm lukewarm on this. I'm excited about motion sensing in the Wiimote, because it will be a necessary part of the interface. On the PS3, it'll be far too easy for lazy developers to just design for a standard controller, and tack the motion-sensing on at the last moment, if at all. I'd love to see this used to its fullest potential, but it probably stands a good chance of turning out like the firewire port on the PS2.

LOL. All this fuss over a silly idea. I agree with the guy who says that he goes to the gym to work out and plays video games to relax. I think that the idea is stupid and fadish on both systems. Of course the first time i use the Wii controller to swing Link's sword will be cool. But what about 12 hrs into the game when the thrill is gone and i wish i could just lay back and tap the good ole A button to get my point across? It will be cool to see its uses in games like Wario ware and Mario Party but thats where the fun stops for me. The only thing that stirred my interest in the Wii, once i saw that Twilight Princess would come out on the Gamecube, is Kojima backing the system.

As for Sony's shit-eating display of a controller put together in a few months with a game that looks like ass using it, We all knew that if the idea caught on Sony would release their own, it's to be expected. That's just how business is, look at how Dreamcast brought internet gaming and web surfing to the console market and now every system has the gaming part at least. Even Nintendo (Who said with the Gamecube that "The future of gaming is not Online") is using some form of internet capability. The whole Sony situation is more Comedy than anything. How Sony tried to keep a straight face and introduce that lack-luster controller to consumers in a manner as if they had no knowledge as to what Nintendo was up to is completly hilarious. I mean PEOPLE IT DOESN'T EVEN HAVE A RUMBLE FEATURE.

I just hope that MGS4 is released on the other 2 systems.

Maybe you never heard of Sega's Dreamcast.Xbox and all the other systems followed Sega's internet idea. And another strange similarity between xbox and dreamcast is the controller. look at them side by side and maybe u'll see a few similarities.

The entire tech industry is based upon "stealing" as you say, technology from everyone else and christening it new and techie. Gyroscopes, as we know them in motion machines were developed to guide space missions. PC's were developed to compute the data generated from gyroscopes. Micro gyroscopes are being developed becuase we beleive all motion objects will benefit from stability control or positioning. Sensors in Motion currently has the worls most accurate MeMs gyro, operating at less than 0.5 deg/hour drift and expected to get much better. We are redefining tech.
