Dell's design concepts for XPS M1710

Adams already mentioned Dell's gaming desktop that is part of their efforts to re-invigorate PC gaming for them. Dell is hoping to "up the cool factor over the next couple of years," particularly with several design concepts for their mobile gaming system, XPS M1710. Dell execs presented four designs, one of which is based on the fiery Renegade System that was unveiled at CES earlier this year; "True Fire" laptop is done by the same artist.

Dell asked us for feedback on the four concepts, which also included "Acid Green," "Alien Invasion," (alien invasion, huh?)and "Blue Skullz." Everyone sounded positive for the most part, though I did overhear something about Trapper Keepers. They are looking for general feedback from the public on their website.

I also inquired about designs that would be geared toward girls. "You mean like pink? Floral?" Uh, oooookay.

Now that Dell and Alienware are one in the same, why are they still compeating with each other. On another note I notice Alienware are now selling SLI laptops in 17" and monster 19" versions.

No prizes for guessing that 'less is more' is a saying that's never been said in the Dell design studios.

There's some nice graphics work on the machines, but personally I'd prefer something a little more discreet.

I like the acid green, assuming it's reflective and that's not some painting of a dude on it.
It's the closest to just being a colour, which is the only way I could ever want a computer. I dont want "pictures" or stupid crap like that all over it.

Actually, the M1710 *is* available in a substantially more quiet package. These designs are future potential *options*.

Their website is annoyingly flash-filled. and their forums are confusing as well.

But lets talk paint job.

I like the look alot. I wouldn't be bringing the skulls or the silly "clawing through the case" design in to meetings with clients, but the flames are really pretty cool.

What gamers really want is performance, so I would have to see the specs. My guess is that this is an insanely overpriced laptop, but that doesn't matter because parents will buy pretty much anything their bratty little kids want.

And what bratty little kids want is a laptop covered in skulls.

I think those laptops look sweet, it looks alot better than having some plain grey or black laptop. It would be better thought if you could tell them what you wanted on it and have a custom paint job but then it would turn into an overpriced Falcon Northwest laptop.

Dell is just like Sony. In the eyes of the public, they can do nothing right.

How lame! It's insulting that Dell thinks of gamers as immature, mindless consumers with zero taste. We're supposed to buy their computers because they put a claw or an alien on it? Give me a break. They look like awful gamer skinz.

It's damn hilarious what passes for "graphic design" these days.

All those designs look like the silkscreened rayon button-up shirts you see kids at the mall wearing.... you know the ones.... with like dragons and fake kanji lettering and flames and stuff. The same kids that wear upside down visors, bleached tips and black JNCO's with like ten different unnecessary straps and pockets....

Thos lappies are seriously fugly. Nuff said.

Oh, if any of you dress as noted above, then i feel horribly sorry for you. Honestly, i do.

Well, the suggestion that laptops for girls would be pink and floral is no crazier than the assumption that guys want skulls monsters and flames?

Alienware should just stop making laptops. Dell's XPS and flagship Inspirons (currently the 9400) are far superior notebooks in every way: battery life, design, portability, performance and reliability.

You don't have to buy it with those designs. However, some people like those kinds of things.

While I'm in the market for a new laptop, I wouldn't buy any of these designs. They're look like those cheap decal stickers you can buy on Ebay for your console and handheld. Why not come out with different colors instead? I may be a girl who wouldn't go for any of those designs, but I would buy a decidedly un-girly red or blue detailed gaming laptop.

Admittedly, I'm not a big PC gamer, but isn't the point to customize your rig *yourself*? This would be like buying a van that already has an air brushed wizard on the side.

I would not want to be caught dead with one of those disgustingly ugly laptops.

To all of you losers who dont have a Dell. I have a XPS Renegade...it really rocks. I have had a Vooodoo and an Apple....both are kitten in front of the Renegade. The paint job is excellent. Great going Dell.

If this is what Dell came up with then i am ashamed. They should ask the gamers what graphics do you want on your laptop although I must say i think this laptop will be way overpriced if that's what some gamers want then they can have it.

ithink this is b***s**t because the gamers want good gaming expeirience not just graphics for there laptop.
