Super Smash Bros. Brawl revealed for Wii, featuring Solid Snake! [update]

Speaking at a special Nintendo developer event, Miyamoto has just unveiled Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii. Newcomers include: Pit (Kid Icarus), Zero Suit Samus, Wario, and ... Snake!

Super Smash Bros. Brawl will be fully compatible with the GameCube controller. Sakurai's reasoning is simple. He doesn't want to alienate gamers that prefer the traditional gamepad.

The game will feature online multiplayer. Single-player mode will see some changes, but Sakurai has declined to elaborate. Miyamoto did say (via translator) that we can expect "a very robust" single-player mode.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl will not be a launch title. Sakurai has confirmed a 2007 release.

Wario will have a special fart attack.

Kojima begged Sakurai to include Snake in the GameCube version of Smash Bros., but it was too late in the development cycle to add the character. When Brawl became a reality, Sakurai contacted Kojima and the decision was made to introduce Snake into the series. Solid Snake will use explosives ... and a cardboard box.
Snake is the only third party character confirmed for Brawl. Sakurai has confirmed that other third party characters are a definite possiblility. There was talk of Sonic...

[This is suitless Samus]

OMG the news I've been waiting for! I loooove SSB. Kid Icarus, Wario, Snake...wait....Snake???? Um...huh. Ok that is the last character I would expect to see in SSB. Like literally the LAST...apart maybe from Master Chief or Kratos. Wierd...that is almost disappointing. I mean, its cool, but...wierd, doesnt seem to fit the feel of the game.
Also, is that a Virtue Fighter character I see. Sarah is it? Classic blue suit? Maybe I am mistkaen but it sure as hell looks like her.
Grant @ May 10th 2006 10:09PM
Sequel = re-release? Huh...
Anyway, Pit from Kid Icarus is in there too. http://revolution.ign.com/articles/707/707504p1.html

All I see is a Joystiq slant on everything Wii and nothing or hardly anything else. Wii Wii Wii.... How about equal coverage on everything else or Joystiq is just showing everyone what Wii Fanboys they really are? Out of the last 15 items on Joystiq, how much is Wii coverage? 80% or more. Get your lazy fanboy asses over to the PC games, PS3 and Xbox 360 and give us some coverage. We all know how much you Joystiq fanboys like holding on to the Wii remote. For you it feels like when you're all alone at home looking at photoshop pics of a naked Samus late at night stroking on...?
Pince @ May 10th 2006 10:10PM
Wow...ick. Spelling errors. Virtua fighter, I mean. Sorry, getting over-excited.

Snake? Fo'real? Hmmm... sounds a bit dodgey for me. But MetaKnight? Zero Suit Samus? Pit? Heck yeah! Especially good to see you, Pit. May SSBB assist you the way it helped your older sister and revive your series! Anyway, other characters I wonder about:
-Stafy. Another "Only in Japan" character. Never know.
-Bubbles. After her cameo in DK: King of Swing, I wonder if it would be unreasoable to expect her appearance.
-Isaac or any other character from Golden Sun. C'mon! After the GS games were such a smash hit (no pun intended), how could they not?
Niel @ May 10th 2006 10:13PM
Hope they don't have copies and multiples of the same characters because it's just a waste of roster space. Gannondorf should have had his own moves.
Spinning Zoomer @ May 10th 2006 10:13PM
Wow!!! Snake is in it too?! And Zero Mission--Suitless-- Samus?! Holy flippin' taco-sauce!!!!
THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST!!!! Legendary!!! I'm shaking I'm so amped!!
GeorgeOfWar @ May 10th 2006 10:14PM
Super Mash Bros. Is this the only good game Nintendo has? LMAO!
GamerZero @ May 10th 2006 10:14PM
There is nothing wrong with playing with Wii!Wii is sociably acceptable and is great fun in small doses but never drink a gallon...
Jason C, @ May 10th 2006 10:14PM
I am more impressed by these then anything at the confrence.
Stenz @ May 10th 2006 10:15PM
This makes me very happy.
Pince @ May 10th 2006 10:15PM
Dear James,
Bitch somewhere else. No one wants to hear it. No I'm not a fanboy, but I'll take what news I can get. Be it news on Halo 3 or Smash Bros 3.
As for my previous comment, yeah, can someone check that that is indeed Sarah from Virtua fighter. Or is that suitless Samus. If it is Samus with no suit then it sure as hell does look like Sarah.

Everyon is just interested in the Wii. Many are heading over there first because thay want to know how it is. It will probably be more split up tomorrow, Just today is the Wii day I guess.

I like the Nintendog... are we going to get to kick puppies around?? Awesome.
Spoon @ May 10th 2006 10:16PM
Uhh, the people saying this isn't news need to take a good look at why the fuck they even play video games.
Anyway, I just peed a little =D
Joey @ May 10th 2006 10:16PM
Very interesting...If they mean snake as in Snake from Metal Gear solid, i doubt that will happen. thats been a game that was played with the Playstations 1&2 for many years, but is possible, because Metal Gear Solid is not an owned, original franchise from Sony. ( Just in case sum ppl dont know, is from Konami, and KCEJ) but yea, other characters like Waluigi, Krystal from Starfox, Meta-knight, Some of the other Zelda Characters, ya know?..all that stuff, but still sum doubt for Snake, because, i thought SSMBB has characters that only came from nintendo, but if he is, that might as well ask sega if they can Sonic & the gang in as well.
PorpoiseMuffins @ May 10th 2006 10:16PM
Hmmm... I would think this would be a good game for the new controller. Kind of disappointing. I suppose that's why it wasn't shown off on the show floor.
Kamalot @ May 10th 2006 10:16PM
Is that a Nintendog!?!
Tyler @ May 10th 2006 10:16PM
AWESOME!!! Super Smash Bros is one of my favorite series. What's that? No using the Wii remote for motion attacks? How can Nintendo let this happen? I thought that was going to be one of this game's most incredible reasons to play. Extremely disappointed on that matter. But...I'll love the game anyway.
Quadrius @ May 10th 2006 10:16PM
...
ZERO
SUIT
SAMUS.
I AM SO DROOLING RIGHT NOW.
rainking187 @ May 10th 2006 10:17PM
Not a launch title? That's really disappointing. That was the main title I was planning on picking up at launch.
Stenz @ May 10th 2006 10:17PM
Maybe joystiq is looking at the Wii stuff now, and the other stuff later?
Grant @ May 10th 2006 10:17PM
I'm almost positive that's Samus in her suit from the end of Zero Mission, which looks just like that suit, plus IGN says so: http://revolution.ign.com/articles/707/707504p1.html
Crushed @ May 10th 2006 10:17PM
YES!
Neo Samus @ May 10th 2006 10:17PM
That female Character is Samus in her zero outfit (no Armor)
richie259 @ May 10th 2006 10:18PM
Pince, that is Samus without her space suit.
jonat3 @ May 10th 2006 10:18PM
Actually, i've read the most negative things about the wii right here on joystiq. So i wouldn't exactly call them biased.
Joystiq is covering the wii, because it's the most interesting. Even Sony and MS fans are interested in it. It's not surprising it gets this much coverage. The lines over at E3 are testament to that (more than 190 minutes wait time over at the Nintendo booth).
Nick @ May 10th 2006 10:18PM
They're hanging out at Wii because there's been a dearth of information on the system before E3, is my guess. Not to mention, based on polls I'd say a good portion of their fanbase are Nintendo fans.
Joystiq does like page hits, as it brings revenues. As such, they print what they and their readers are seeking. Frankly, I don't care about Ratchet and Clank for the PSP, but SSB:B is breaking news, and more than worthy of the site.
Third, they're at the event, and I'd go and write on what I was interested in if I were them. So if Wii is up their alley, so be it. It isn't like they haven't been harsh on the system and games, I've been glad they've been brutally honest with their appraisals, especially when some games (*ehem*Sports*ehem*) appear to be little more than quirky tech demos.
Lastly, E3 is the first time the world has really gotten its hands on a Wii-mote. I'm sucking up details like a sponge, and glad to read everyone's views on it. There's still two days to hit everything else.
Thanks Joystiq, keep it coming.
CelSplode @ May 10th 2006 10:18PM
Zero-Suit Samus = Samus without a suit.. not Sarah from Virtua Fighter, and if there's a resemblance it's not intentionally bc it looks exactly like Samus when she removes her helmet or when you are actually playing suitless.
Joey @ May 10th 2006 10:19PM
Apologies for my typos... i thought SSMBB has characters that only came from nintendo, but if he is, thay* might as well ask sega if they can *have* Sonic & the gang in as well.
The3rdNuisance @ May 10th 2006 10:20PM
I see, I have just sh*t my pants. Thank god the Wii controller has nothing to do with this game, it would suck for a 2D fighter. Solid Snake though, I am seriously surprised, but the bigger surprises are Zero Suit Samus, and Wario, 2 Nintendo owned characters, but yeah...
Cowlix @ May 10th 2006 10:20PM
Wow. Solid Snake. That was so random, I almost expected the Spanish Inquistion.
